Exploring Mergers of Galaxy Clusters in a Cosmological Context

2010

We present results of an Eulerian Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) hydrodynamical and N-body simulation in a ΛCDM cosmology. The simulation incorporates common cooling and heating processes, a phenomenological description of the star formation and supernovae feedback. A specific halo finder has been designed and applied in order to extract a sample of galaxy clusters directly obtained from the simulation without considering any resimulating scheme. We have studied the evolutionary history of the cluster halos, and classified them in three categories depending on the merger events they have undergone. We pay special attention to discuss the role of merger events as a source of feedback and reh…

NGC1600 - Cluster or Field Elliptical?

2008

A study of the galaxy distribution in the field of the elliptical galaxy NGC1600 has been undertaken. Although this galaxy is often classified as a member of a loose group, all the neighbouring galaxies are much fainter and could be taken as satellites of NGC1600. The number density profile of galaxies in the field of this galaxy shows a decline with radius, with evidence of a background at approximately 1.3 Mpc. The density and number density profile are consistent with that found for other isolated early-type galaxies. NGC1600 appears as an extended source in X-rays, and the center of the X-ray emission seems not to coincide with the center of the galaxy. The velocity distribution of neig…

On the deceleration of Fanaroff–Riley Class I jets: mass loading by stellar winds

2014

Jets in low-luminosity radio galaxies are known to decelerate from relativistic speeds on parsec scales to mildly or sub-relativistic speeds on kiloparsec scales. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain this effect, including strong reconfinement shocks and the growth of instabilities (both leading to boundary-layer entrainment) and mass loading from stellar winds or molecular clouds. We have performed a series of axisymmetric simulations of the early evolution of jets in a realistic ambient medium to probe the effects of mass loading from stellar winds using the code Ratpenat. We study the evolution of Fanaroff-Riley Class I (FRI) jets, with kinetic powers L_j \sim 1.e41-1.e44 erg…

ROSAT-HRI investigation of the NGC 507 X-ray halo

2002

We present an X-ray investigation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 507. We make use of archival Rosat HRI, PSPC and Chandra data, to connect the large-scale structure of the halo to the core morphology. Our analysis shows that the halo core (r<2-3 r_e) and the external halo (r>3 r_e) are characterised by different dynamical properties and suggests a different origin of the two components. The halo core has a complex morphology with a main X-ray emission peak, coincident with the center of the optical galaxy, and several secondary peaks. The spatial and spectral analysis of the central peak shows that this feature is produced by denser hot gas in the galaxy core. Our data support the scena…

A Sample of Field Ellipticals

2003

Using well-defined selection criteria applied to the LEDA galaxy catalogue we have constructed a sample of elliptical galaxies that can be taken to lie in the field. Such criteria can easily be applied to theoretical simulations for direct comparison with observations. The variation of the number of `isolated' ellipticals with selection criteria is also investigated. A preliminary study of the environment of the field ellipticals shows that, in the mean, they are surrounded by a population of dwarf galaxies, out to projected radii of at least 500 kpc, with a radial density profile of $r^{-0.6\pm 0.2}$ and a luminosity function slope of $\alpha \sim -1.8$. The results are compared and contra…

Is ram-pressure stripping an efficient mechanism to remove gas in galaxies?

2017

We study how the gas in a sample of galaxies (M* > 10e9 Msun) in clusters, obtained in a cosmological simulation, is affected by the interaction with the intra-cluster medium (ICM). The dynamical state of each elemental parcel of gas is studied using the total energy. At z ~ 2, the galaxies in the simulation are evenly distributed within clusters, moving later on towards more central locations. In this process, gas from the ICM is accreted and mixed with the gas in the galactic halo. Simultaneously, the interaction with the environment removes part of the gas. A characteristic stellar mass around M* ~ 10e10 Msun appears as a threshold marking two differentiated behaviours. Below this mas…
