Management of the oral hemangiomas in infants and children : scoping review

2019

Background Pediatric oral hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors that can be seen from birth, particularly in females. Hemangiomas are most frequent located in the lips and usually regress spontaneously, thus they do not require any type of treatment in most cases. The present scoping review pretended to synthesize the most relevant and currently available information from the international dental literature published in the last 25 years, regarding the management of pediatric oral hemangiomas. Material and Methods An exhaustive literature search was performed in four electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane). Initially, 241 related titles and abstracts were found.…

Laser and other treatment options in the therapy of infantile capillary eyelid and periorbital hemangiomas: An overview

2010

Abstract Hemangiomas in infancy generally require a multidisciplinary approach. As a result of their natural course, usually with spontaneous involution, a “watch-and-wait” strategy often seems to be sufficient. Nevertheless, in periorbital hemangiomas not only cosmetic but also functional aspects may require an early intervention. There are many treatment options such as steroids, surgery, cryotherapy, magnesium seeds and laser. The present paper focuses on the different types of laser used in the treatment of infantile capillary eyelid and periorbital hemangiomas.

A case series of intraosseous hemangioma of the jaws : various presentations of a rare entity

2017

Background Hemangiomas of the soft tissue are common in the head and neck area, especially in the tongue and in children under ten years of age. Intraosseous hemangiomas of the mandible and maxilla (IHM), on the other hand, are exceedingly rare and are not well characterized. This study presents six IHM cases focusing on the clinical, radiographic, and histologic characteristics. Material and Methods Six cases of IHM were retrieved from the archives of the Biopsy Services at the University of Washington. Clinical, radiologic, and histologic findings are described. Results A total of six cases of IHM were reviewed. The patient age range was 16 to 65; the group comprised three females and thr…

The basis, technique and indication for cryosurgery in tumours of the oral cavity and face

1975

The fundamentals of clinical application of crysurgery with very deep freezing of tissues is based on the necrotising effect of extreme cooling. The freezing of extracellular and intracellular free fluid leads to irreversible cell damage, because of a shift of electrolyte concentration to toxic values, and a direct lesion of internal cellular structures. The lesion due to cold occurs as a clear demarcation from the healthy surrounding, almost completely painlessness, and rapid healing without complication. For clinical application in the head and neck, there are cooling instruments fitted with specially shaped, exchangeable probe heads. Convincing results were achieved in the cryosurgical t…

Cavernous hemangioma of the parotid gland in adults

2014

Hemangiomas account for 0.4-0.6% of all tumors of the parotid gland and most of them occur in children, nevertheless in adults hemangiomas are very rare. We report the case of a 62 year old woman with a mass in the parotid right tail associated with fluctuating swelling episodes unrelated to meals and with a slowly progressive growth. The provisional diagnosis was a pleomorphic adenoma, so a right superficial parotidectomy was performed. During surgery, the macroscopic appearance makes suspect a vascular lesion. The histopathological result was a cavernous hemangioma. The classic clinical presentation of a parotid hemangioma is an intraglandular mass associated or not with skin lesions char…

Role of radiology in central hemangioma of jaws

2010

Central hemangioma, a bone destructive lesion, is a benign tumor. Hemangiomas of jaws are rare entity and produ- ces many different radiographic images. Radiographic differential diagnosis includes osteosarcoma, fibrous dysplasia, central giant cell granuloma, ameloblastoma, odontogenic myxoma, multiple myeloma, dentigerous cyst and aneurysmal bone cyst. Since it involves proliferation of blood vessels so aspiration or biopsy of such lesions can lead to severe hemorrhage which can turn out to be lethal. We stress on the importance of radiology in the timely diagnosis of such lesions which can prevent the disaster not only to the patient but also to oral surgeon in legal and professional asp…

SIUMB guidelines and recommendations for the correct use of ultrasound in the management of patients with focal liver disease

2019

The present document describes the SIUMB (Italian Society of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology) guidelines for the use of ultrasound in the management of focal liver disease. The aim of the paper is to provide a clinical practice guideline for Italian physicians who are approaching the ultrasound study of a focal liver lesion. In particular, these guidelines provide simple indications, recommendations and general practice advices for the correct use of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in this scenario. They represent the SIUMB position of the ultrasound role in the diagnostic flow charts of the principal focal liver lesions, and are in agreement with other, previously published national…
