Energy and Network Models for the Intelligent Control of Distributed Systems
2014
This paper presents detailed energy and network models for the intelligent control of a distributed system which also comprises power generation from renewables. The two models provide interactive energy monitoring, intelligent control and power demand balancing at home, block and neighbor level. Particularly, it is here described how the energy model works and also details of how it has been validated are here given. Moreover, it is shown how the energy model simulation results are transferred to the network simulation software SynerGEE, set up by GL Noble Denton Industrial Services Ltd (UK), in order to fully perform network simulations.
The sROD demonstrator for the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter Upgrade
2012
This work presents the early design of the super Read-Out Driver (sROD) demonstrator board for the Tile Calorimeter Demonstrator project. This project aims to test the new readout electronics architecture for the Phase 2 Upgrade of the ATLAS Tile Calorimeter, replacing the front-end electronics of one complete drawer with the new electronics during the Long Shutdown 2013, in order to evaluate its performance. The sROD demonstrator board will receive and process data from 48 channels. Moreover the sROD demonstrator board will send preprocessed data to the present trigger system, and will transmit trigger control and timing information (TTC) and Detector Control System (DCS) commands to the f…
An FPGA-Based Software Defined Radio Platform for the 2.4GHz ISM Band
2006
A prototype of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) platform has been successfully designed and tested implementing a reconfigurable IEEE 802.11 and ZigBee receiver. The system exploits the reconfiguration capability of an FPGA for implementing a number of receiver configurations that share the same RF front-end. Configurations can be switched at run time, or can share the available logic and radio resource.
Power Consumption Analysis of Operating Systems for Wireless Sensor Networks
2010
In this paper four wireless sensor network operating systems are compared in terms of power consumption. The analysis takes into account the most common operating systems-TinyOS v1.0, TinyOS v2.0, Mantis and Contiki-running on Tmote Sky and MICAz devices. With the objective of ensuring a fair evaluation, a benchmark composed of four applications has been developed, covering the most typical tasks that a Wireless Sensor Network performs. The results show the instant and average current consumption of the devices during the execution of these applications. The experimental measurements provide a good insight into the power mode in which the device components are running at every moment, and t…
Automated inventory management and security surveillance system using image processing techniques
2010
Efficient inventory management and allocation of cargo space is an imperative parameter in the industry today. In this paper we propose an algorithm to automate complete inventory unit with the aid of image processing and artificial intelligence algorithms. These algorithms work on the data acquired through image processing. This data then integrates with the Artificial Intelligence algorithm which in turn takes inputs from the sensors present on the robot. These sensors help in precise localization of the robot. The path planning algorithm takes input from virtual map buffer which is present in the CPU memory. This buffer in accordance with the sensor data and Image Processing data generat…
A Low-cost, Real-time Monitoring System for PV Plants based on ATmega 328P-PU Microcontroller
2015
This paper presents a real-time monitoring system for PV power plants based on a microcontroller Atmega328P-PU. The proposed system, whose performances can be relatively close to those achieved with commercial monitoring systems, is simple, low-cost and open source technology-based. In addition, a user interface, capable to communicate through a wireless network by using a standard communication protocol IEEE 802.15.1, is here presented. From the experimental tests described and discussed in this paper it is demonstrated that the proposed monitoring system provides, with adequate accuracy, all the information about the operating status of the PV plant, even during fault conditions.
On-body to on-body channel characterization
2011
Interest in on-body communication channels is growing as the use of wireless devices increases in medical, consumer and military sensor applications. This paper presents an experimental investigation and analysis of the narrowband on-body propagation channel. This analysis considers each of the factors affecting the channel during a range of stationary and motion activities in different environments with actual wireless mote devices on the body. Use of such motes allows greater freedom in the subject's movements and the inclusion of real-world indoor and outdoor environments in a test sequence. This paper identifies and analyses the effect of the different components of the signal propagati…
NB PLC and Software Defined Networking for Smart Grid Applications
2017
During the last years, the installation of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and the expected diffusion of Electrical Vehicles (EVs), is increasing the complexity of the distribution grid, making the management of the grid operated by Distribution System Operators (DSOs) more difficult. The Smart Grid approach tries to provide a response to these troubles, by means of a strong interaction between the power grid and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures. The drawback of this approach is an increase in the management effort of the ICT infrastructures, for which the DSO are not prepared. Software Defined Networking (SDN) is an approach developed to manage complex ICT…
Future house automation
2015
In this paper, we propose the future house automation, a PLC-based embedded system that aims reducing the house energy consumption by optimizing the entire hardware assembly and software algorithms. The project started from the idea of designing a self-controlled house, to increase user's comfort in his daily environment, reducing the cost and optimizing the energy consumption. Our embedded application represents a green solution into a growing number of environmentally aware consumers, very suitable for the market of energy-efficient control systems. We provide a cheap solution for developing by everyone its own automation system control house. Therefore, our project contributes for helpin…
<title>Architecture for real-time wood inspection</title>
2000
This study has been realized to improve industrial machines that allow to analyze planks by detecting their width and too important defects thanks to a computer vision system. These machines are currently piloted by software with the help of PCs. The aim of our work is to realize a hardware card to increase the processing speed.
