ABSTRACT: The Imago Primi Saeculi Societatis Iesv (1640) is, perhaps, the most beautiful book of emblems published by the Jesuits in the seventeenth century. The book is a festive commemoration offered by the priests and students of the Flemish-Belgian Province in celebration of the centenary of the founding of the Society of Jesus. The work includes 127 full-page emblems distributed throughout a total of 956 folio-sized pages that narrate and illustrate in emblematic fashion the foundation, development, vicisstitudes and achievements of the Socirty in its evangelical and pedagogical mission. En el año 1650 un terremoto destruye el convento de la Merced de Cuzco, por lo que ha de ser reconstruido de nuevo. Con este motivo se lleva a cabo en el claustro bajo una celda, apodada del Padre Salamanca, cuyos muros y techos están totalmente recubiertos con pinturas al temple, que componen un programa iconográfico unitario, a pesar de que se observan varios estilos y la participación de al menos dos o tres artistas. The Mediterranean monk seal (Monachus monachus) is one of the most endangered marine mammals in the world. This species has been threatened since ancient times by human activities and currently amounts to approximately 700 individuals distributed in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea (Aegean and Ionian Sea) and Eastern Atlantic Ocean (Cabo Blanco and Madeira). In other areas, where the species is considered “probably extinct”, an increase in sporadic sightings has been recorded during recent years. Sightings and accidental catches of Mediterranean monk seals have become more frequent in the Adriatic Sea, mainly in Croatia but also along the coasts of Montenegro, Albania and Southern Italy. A partir de las referencias literarias de la Antigüedad, enriquecidas e interpretadas especialmente desde el siglo XVI, el presente artículo explica cómo un buen número de árboles, plantas y flores se convirtieron en atributos de dioses y héroes, bien como símbolo de sus virtudes o de sus actividades. Fernand de Montessus de Ballore, à la naissance de la sismologie moderne

Fernand de Montessus de Ballore (1851-1923) est considéré comme un des précurseurs de la sismologie moderne. On lui doit une importante production scientifique dans ce domaine : il a notamment établi, par des relevés rigoureux et nombreux, que les tremblements de terre étaient en relation avec la géologie et non avec les phases de la lune ou les volcans souterrains comme on le supposait au début du XXe siècle. Officier de l'armée française, alors en garnison à Nîmes, il écrit en 1886 au scientifique genevois Louis Soret (1827-1890), qui fait partie de la commission suisse chargée d'étudier les séismes dans ce pays. C'est l'analyse de cette lettre à Soret qui fait l'objet de notre article.
