Assessment of the embodied energy for manufacturing and laying a submarine outfall pipeline
2008
The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology was applied to a submarine outfall pipeline intended for the disposal of treated MWW in the South Tyrrhenian Sea, on Western Coast of Sicily. The pipe serves 115 thousands inhabitants; it is 3,1 km long with an outer diameter of 800 mm and is allocated in a submarine trench down to 18 m bsl. The pipe ends with a multiport diffuser with outer diameter 500 mm. The whole pipeline is made in HDPE and is statically stabilized by cast iron rings and concrete anchor blocks. From the detailed constructive project of the pipeline the most relevant items involved were drawn and the most important ones were selected, both as materials employed and as laying …

Sense-Making, Meaningfulness, and Instrumental Music Education
2020
The purpose of this paper is to re-examine the nature of "meaning" and "meaningfulness" in the context of instrumental music education. By doing so, I propose to expand the ways in which instrumental music educators conceive their mission and the ways in which we may instill meaning in people's lives. Traditionally, pursuits of philosophical deliberation have claimed that meaningfulness comes from either personal happiness (e.g., Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill) or an impersonal sense of duty (e.g., St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and Immanuel Kant). However, philosopher Wolf (2010) criticizes these positions in favor of a broader perspective, one that arises from understanding that …
Learning and Synchronising Dance Movements in South African Songs – Cross-cultural Motion-capture Study
2011
Music and dance are human universals. Understanding the communicative nature and the interpersonal dynamics of making music and dancing has a wide area of applications from academic to artistic, educational and therapeutic uses. Cross-cultural and embodied cognitive approaches are important, as they ensure a view across a spectrum of cultural practices and allow us to explore which aspects of cognitive performance are learned and how. In this study, our aims were to use a case study to investigate possible cross-cultural differences in movement, especially corporeal representation of beat and metre; to study group entrainment and factors contributing to synchronisation accuracy. From earli…
Verbal definitions of familiar objects in blind children reflect their peculiar perceptual experience
2012
Background The aim of the present study was to examine to what extent the verbal definitions of familiar objects produced by blind children reflect their peculiar perceptual experience and, in consequence, differ from those produced by sighted children. Methods Ninety-six visually impaired children, aged between 6 and 14 years, and 32 age-matched sighted children had to define 10 words denoting concrete animate or inanimate familiar objects. Results The blind children evoked the tactile and auditory characteristics of objects and expressed personal perceptual experiences in their definitions. The sighted children relied on visual perception, and produced more visually oriented verbalism. In…
INNOVAZIONE DEI MATERIALI NATURALI: TERRA E NANOTUBI DI ARGILLA PER UNA SFIDA SOSTENIBILE
2019
Investigating the Affordances and Constraints of SimReal for Mathematical Learning : A Case Study in Teacher Education
2019
Visualizations tools are one of the most innovative technologies that emerged the last few years in educational settings. They provide new potentialities for mathematical learning by means of dynamic animations and representations, interactive simulations, and live streaming of lessons. Moreover, visualization tools have the potential to foster a visual, dynamic, distributed, and embodied mathematics rather than individual achievements and static representations. This paper uses the visualization tool SimReal in teacher education to explore the affordances of the tool for learning mathematics. It proposes a framework that captures the affordances of SimReal at a technological, pedagogical, …
The embodied consciousness
2020
Consciousness is a polysemous concept including among others self-awareness (of his body ...), the awareness of the environment around us, the awareness of the other or even narrative awareness (a kind of inner monologue that can be part of more extended temporalities). To this list could be added the consciousness attached to each sensory organ in which visual perception would be overrepresented. Compared to the consciousness linked to vestibular sensory signals or proprioception (if however these can generate separate consciousnesses), "visual awareness" lends itself more easily to introspection. In Occident, all these consciousnesses generally refer to a knowledge of self by duplication …
An Embodied approach to acousmatic music
2012
Acousmatic music offers a unique laboratory for the consideration of the embodied experience of music. Acousmatic works tend to operate on two simultaneous planes: a more abstract, musical level of gesture, phrase, colour, texture, and motion; and a more literal, narrative level, which references realworld objects, actions, contexts and environments, either more directly – for example through the direct reproduction of such objects and actions – or in a more distanced, mediated manner. These two aspects offer very different perspectives on embodiment, which are enacted simultaneously. On the one hand, the musical aspects of acousmatic music offer an excellent forum for the consideration of …
Understanding Human-Technology Relations Within Technologization and Appification of Musicality
2020
In this paper, we outline a theoretical account of the relationship between technology and human musicality. An enactive and biocultural position is adopted that assumes a close coevolutionary relationship between the two. From this position, we aim at clarifying how the present and emerging technologies, becoming embedded and embodied in our lifeworld, inevitably co-constitute and transform musical practices, skills, and ways of making sense of music. Therefore, as a premise of our scrutiny, we take it as a necessity to more deeply understand the ways that humans become affiliated to the ever-changing instruments of music technology, in order to better understand the coevolutionary impact …
