Heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) accumulates in stressed cells and helps them to survive adverse conditions. We have already shown that HSP27 has a function in the ubiquitination process that is modulated by its oligomerization/phosphorylation status. Here, we show that HSP27 is also involved in protein sumoylation, a ubiquitination-related process. HSP27 increases the number of cell proteins modified by small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO)-2/3 but this effect shows some selectivity as it neither affects all proteins nor concerns SUMO-1. Unborn children are exposed to environmental pollutants via the placenta, and there is a causal relationship between maternal intake of pollutants and fetal exposure. Placental examination is an effective way for acquiring data for estimating fetal exposure. We analyzed the concentrations of 104 congeners of persistent organic pollutants, seven organotin compounds, five heavy metals, and methylmercury in 130 randomly selected placentas. Additionally, we examined similarities between pollutant concentrations by analyzing correlations between their placental concentrations. MicroRNAs of the miR-302 cluster are involved in early embryonic development and somatic cell reprogramming. Expression of the miR-302 gene is regulated by the binding of the pluripotency factors Oct4, Sox2 and Nanog to the miR-302 promoter. The specific expression pattern of the miR-302 gene suggested that additional transcription factors might be involved in its regulation. We have developed a microfluidic chip-based qualitative assay for sensitive (10 RNA copies) detection of multiple transcripts in single cells. We determined the expression patterns of 17 developmentally important genes and isoforms in individual mouse preimplantation embryos from superovulated matings and blastomeres.
