Differential Greek and northern African migrations to Sicily are supported by genetic evidence from the Y chromosome

2009

The presence or absence of genetic heterogeneity in Sicily has long been debated. Through the analysis of the variation of Y-chromosome lineages, using the combination of haplogroups and short tandem repeats from several areas of Sicily, we show that traces of genetic flows occurred in the island, due to ancient Greek colonization and to northern African contributions, are still visible on the basis of the distribution of some lineages. The genetic contribution of Greek chromosomes to the Sicilian gene pool is estimated to be about 37% whereas the contribution of North African populations is estimated to be around 6%. In particular, the presence of a modal haplotype coming from the southern…

Kościół dla wybranych? O specyfice indyjskich chrześcijan knānāya

2015

Early human peopling of Sicily: Evidence from the Mesolithic skeletal remains from Grotta d'Oriente

2010

The site of Grotta d'Oriente, Island of Favignana, Sicily has yielded the complete skeleton of an adult female (OB) dated to the Mesolithic age. The cranial morphometry of this individual can provide us with some useful information about the peopling of Sicily in the Early Holocene period.Morphological affinities of OB and other Sicilian Mesolithic specimens were assessed to verify hypotheses concerning the early peopling of Sicily.Craniofacial metric data were employed in a comparative analysis with European Upper Palaeolithic (UP), Mesolithic, Neolithic, and Copper/Bronze age samples, and contemporary Italians. Both a model-free and a model-bound approach were used not only to calculate c…

Na celowniku tajnych służb PRL. Sprawa Aleksandra Demideckiego-Demidowicza

2014

Who was Aleksander Demidecki-Demidowicz. Without a doubt he was one of the most prominent politicians in exile in France. He was famous for his ability to win people over and to cooperate with people of different political views. His significance and role is best illustrated by the fact that in 1958 he was unanimously chosen as the leader of the Division of the National Council of Poland. It is no wonder that the intelligence services of the PRL government were interested in him. What were the consequences? Did Demidecki-Demidowicz really collaborate with the PRL authorities, or did he just play along in order to find out the plans of the communist secret service towards Polish emigrants? W…

Hepatitis C virus prevalence and level of intervention required to achieve the WHO targets for elimination in the European Union by 2030: a modelling…

2017

Background Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a leading cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality worldwide. In the European Union (EU), treatment and cure of HCV with direct-acting antiviral therapies began in 2014. WHO targets are to achieve a 65% reduction in liver-related deaths, a 90% reduction of new viral hepatitis infections, and 90% of patients with viral hepatitis infections being diagnosed by 2030. This study assessed the prevalence of HCV in the EU and the level of intervention required to achieve WHO targets for HCV elimination. Methods We populated country Markov models for the 28 EU countries through a literature search of PubMed and Embase between Jan 1, 2000, and March 31, 201…

The skilled migration in North-South direction: the case of the Spanish scientists in Ecuador during the Great Recession (2008-2015)

2020
