An ion cooler-buncher for high-sensitivity collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE

2008

International audience; A gas-filled segmented linear Paul trap has been installed at the focal plane of the high-resolution separator (HRS) at CERN-ISOLDE. As well as providing beams with a reduced transverse emittance, this device is also able to accumulate the ions and release the sample in bunches with a well-defined time structure. This has recently permitted collinear laser spectroscopy with stable and radioactive bunched beams to be demonstrated at ISOLDE. Surface-ionized 39, 44, 46K and 85Rb beams were accelerated to 30keV, mass separated and injected into the trap for subsequent extraction and delivery to the laser setup. The ions were neutralized in a charge exchange cell and exci…

The polytron as a cw electron accelerator in the 10 GeV range

1991

Abstract This article is concerned with a generalized microtron, characterized essentially by the number of magnet pairs in its bending system. It is shown that the most serious physical energy limit of the microtron, emittance growth due to synchrotron radiation, may be overcome if this number is raised essentially above what has been considered in the past. The main properties of such “polytrons” are investigated and several design examples for 15 GeV output energy are discussed.

Resonant transition radiation in the X-ray region from a low emittance 855 MeV electron beam

1994

The interference of transition radiation coherently produced from a periodic stack of four polyimide foils of 7.2 μm thickness and a separation of 162 μm was investigated. This stack has been brought into the low emittance (3 π nm rad) electron beam of the 855 MeV Mainz Microtron MAMI. Transition radiation was observed in the energy range from 2 to 15 keV with a LN2-cooled pin photodiode. A good energy resolution of 0.8 keV and angular resolution of 0.15 mrad was achieved simultaneously allowing for the first time to quantitatively study the interference pattern. Good agreement with theoretical calculations is found. Prospects to exploit transition radiation in the x-ray region from a low e…

Cooling of radioactive ions with the Penning trap REXTRAP

2005

Abstract Cooling of radioactive ion beams in a Penning trap is an essential component of the post-accelerator REX-ISOLDE at CERN. Prior to their charge-breeding and acceleration, ions from the on-line mass separator ISOLDE are accumulated, cooled and bunched with REXTRAP. This beam preparation provides short ion pulses with low emittance, key ingredient for a high efficiency of REX-ISOLDE. Two different cooling techniques have been investigated with REXTRAP. Both rely on the use of a buffer gas as the coolant but differ in the way the transversal compression of the stored ion cloud is achieved. Sideband cooling with a light buffer gas as coolant is the standard technique used at REXTRAP so …

Emittance measurements with optical transition radiation at the S-DALINAC

2020

Abstract A new emittance measurement system has been installed at the superconducting, recirculating electron accelerator S-DALINAC. It is based on the quadrupole-scan technique and beam profile measurements with optical transition radiation. A first demonstration of this setup has been conducted as part of the beam-based alignment of an SRF cavity. The corresponding emittance measurement is described here, and the following data evaluation is discussed.

Source of Polarized Electrons for MAMI B

1991

A source of polarized electrons has been set up in order to inject polarized electrons into the 855 MeV c.w. electron accelerator MAMI B at the Mainz nuclear physics institute. It is based on photoemission of the 3/5 semiconductor GaAsP and will provide a d.c. current of 100 µA with a beam emittance of 1π mm mrad, and a polarization of about 40%.

Remittance behaviours of foreigners in Italy

2013

This paper intends to figure out why immigrants remit, what characteristics they have and, in particular, which of these individual characteristics influence (and in what sense) their remittance behaviours. In particular, it aims to verify the existence of a "time effect" during the migration process. The time effect supposes that the propensity and amount of remittances become less consistent as far as the immigrant integrates into the host country and the ties with the country of origin become less intense. In practice, according to this hypothesis, the evolution of the migration plan towards stabilisation in the new country, rather than to return home, would lead the migrant to invest mo…
