“I felt a bit nervous” : Virtual Exchange as an emotional journey
2021
Virtual Exchange is a collective term for a set of collaborative online learning practices that cut across institutional, cultural, and international borders. Moving outside their learning environments, the participants engage in project work with foreign peers. The teams have to work across time zones, use foreign languages, manage cultural differences and apply digital tools for communication and collaboration. The virtual projects enhance the development of transversal work/life skills, which are an asset in today’s global labour market. The aim of the present study is to explore the emotional trajectory of Virtual Exchange based on the students’ e-portfolios. By analysing the self-evalu…
Intra‐individual dynamics of lesson‐specific engagement: Lagged and cross‐lagged effects from one lesson to the next
2020
Background Student engagement denotes active participation in academic work through commitment and involvement in learning tasks (Appleton et al., 2006, Journal of School Psychology, 44, 427). An Integrative Approach to Emotional Agency at Work
2022
AbstractThe concept of agency has recently emerged as a fruitful construct in understanding organizational practices and development. However, agency has tended so far to be seen as a rational and goal-oriented phenomenon, with little attention paid to the role of emotions within it. There is thus a need for theoretical discussion on both agency and emotions in organizations, and also on how the two phenomena are related. This paper aims to introduce an elaborated conceptualization of emotional agency at work, based on recent theories on professional agency and emotions in organizational contexts. We suggest that emotional agency can be understood as the competence to perceive, understand, …

2021
Nowadays machines have become extremely smart, there are a lot of existing services that seemed to be unexpectable and futuristic decades or even a few years ago. However, artificial intelligence is still far from human intelligence, machines do not have feelings, consciousness, and intuition. How can we help machines to learn about human feelings and understand their needs better? People take their devices wherever they go, what can devices tell us about their owners? Personal preferences and needs are dependent on emotional and situational contexts. Therefore, emotional and activity aware gadgets would be more intuitive and provide more appropriate information to users. Contemporary weara…

Emotions in Concert : Performers' Experienced Emotions on Stage
2013
Music is often said to be expressive of emotions. Surprisingly, not much is known about the role of performers’ emotions while performing. Do musicians feel the musical emotions when expressing them? Or has expressive playing nothing to do with the emotional experiences of the performer? To investigate performers’ perspectives on the role of emotions in performance, we conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with nineteen musicians teaching or studying at a European conservatoire. In the interviews, musicians were first asked to de-scribe a recent performance experience in as much detail as possible, then to make a visual representation of their experiences on stage, and finally, to answe…
Paths from socioemotional behavior in middle childhood to personality in middle adulthood.
2012
Continuity in individual differences from socioemotional behavior in middle childhood to personality characteristics in middle adulthood was examined on the assumption that they share certain temperament-related elements. Socioemotional characteristics were measured using teacher ratings at ages 8 (N = 369; 53% males) and 14 (95% of the initial sample). Personality was assessed at age 42 (63% of the initial sample; 50% males) using a shortened version of the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI); the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP); and the Adult Temperament Questionnaire (ATQ). Three models were tested using structural equation modeling. The results confirmed paths (a) from behavioral …
Il corpo, le emozioni e il riconoscimento reciproco
2019
This essay describes a phenomenology of the body and his language, the emotions. The main purpose is to highlight their referential scope. Emotions enable us to comprehend individual aspects partecipating in our lifeworlds. This perspective challanges today's dominant culture, where emotions are understood as mere self-expressions. Seen as favourable reactions to meeting the other, emotions appaear to us as forms of love and produce knowledge by dilection for the other's inner world. A reflection on the emotions, particulary empathy, highlights their impotance for the moral education to a correct sensibility.
