French PhDs employed in private sector. The signal effect of chaotic pathways
2017
International audience; This research deals with the question of french PhDs´ career trajectories and especially those that lead to private sector employment. Using longitudinal survey "Generation" from Cereq, which allows to observe professional paths over the first five years of working life, we show that for PhDs graduated in 2010, public-sector research remains the main opening. There are few career paths leading to private sector and PhDs working in firms found their job at a very early stage in their working life. Using data analysis and econometrics methods we find that thesis conditions, professional expectations and cahotic pathways are obstacles to employment in firms.
Self-employment duration in urban and rural locations
2009
Previous research has shown that local environment is important for self-employment. Self-employment dynamics varies between areas characterized by different labour market conditions, entrepreneurial tradition and other structural factors. Alternation between different labour market states (self-employment, paid-employment, non-employment) is also likely to increase if employment opportunities remain low in local labour market markets. This paper analyses the factors influencing the duration of self-employment spells in Finland with a large registered-based data set from the period of 1987-2002. It is evident that rates of exit out of self-employment and the length of self-employment spells…
The social mediators: limits and challenges of a system
2011
Following a study aimed at measuring the limits and challenges of the social mediation system, the authors put forward an examination in this article of the mutual expectations of the social mediator and its employer, the urban community. This sociological study is comprehensive: it uses the method of the individual interview and focus group. The analysis of the results is supported by contributions from Boltanski and Thévenot in order to compare the reference “worlds” of both types of actor. It is supplemented by the analysis of notions of “system” (Foucault) and “professionalisation” (Hainaux et al., Bartoli). The authors try to understand the extent to which the actors understand involve…
The Human Right to Social Security and Its Impact on Socio-Political Action in Germany and Finland
2017

The paper aims at filling the gap by analysing the conception of human beings inherent in human rights and in unemployment policy documents in Germany and Finland. Its focus lies on the right to social security, a central norm of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The main question is what impact does the right to social security have on socio-political action in Germany and Finland. The results of the analysis, which was based on the objective hermeneutics, revealed a structural similarity between the conceptions of human beings in both cou…

Reliability, validity and performance determinants of the military simulation test for the assessment of anaerobic performance in soldiers
2020
Introduction: Measurements of physical fitness have been identified as one of the most important research priorities in the military. Currently, the physical fitness tests of The Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) do not include a valid and reliable anaerobic test. In order to develop job-related task simulation tests, the purpose of the study was to determine the reliability and validity of a high-intensity military simulation test (MST), which is designed to assess the task-specific anaerobic performance of soldiers. The MST includes typical combat-related maneuvers while wearing a 20 kg combat load. Methods: 22 male cadets (22.5 ± 0.8 years) volunteered to participate. The MST was performed th…
Diversity begets diversity: A global perspective on gender equality in scientific society leadership.
2018
Research shows that gender inequality is still a major issue in academic science, yet academic societies may serve as underappreciated and effective avenues for promoting female leadership. That is, society membership is often self-selective, and board positions are elected (with a high turnover compared to institutions)—these characteristics, among others, may thus create an environment conducive to gender equality. We therefore investigate this potential using an information-theoretic approach to quantify gender equality (male:female ratios) in zoology society boards around the world. We compare alternative models to analyze how society characteristics might predict or correlate with the …

The data were gathered via a questionnaire administered to graduates in business and administration (n = 1067) and in technology (n = 1087), three years after their graduation. The results showed that men were able to secure permanent and full-time employment more often than women, and men achieved better correspondence between their degree and their employment. Howev…
