THE “BIOTECHNICAL” ROLE OF SALSOLA AGRIGENTINA GUSS. IN THE ENVIRONMENT PLANNING AS A CONSERVATION STRATEGY
2007
Phytogeography studies are very important in environment planning, and especially in nature restoration where endemic or rare species as Salsola agrigentina Guss. can be used. These species represent the more suitable plants to be used within the protected areas. So the study on their features and aptitude in nature restoration (biotechnical role) is strongly required and also is related to nursery activity useful for a good ex situ conservation strategy of these taxa. Salsola agrigentina is endemic to Sicily island growing on soils of evaroritic origin. By ecological point of view, the species takes part in typical halo-nitrophilous thicket characterised by a relevant presence Chenopodiace…
Pactola kuscheli sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), a potential cause for the decline of the threatened New Caledonian conifer, Agathis montana de…
2017
Agathis montana is a conifer endemic to New Caledonia and one of the most threatened (Critically Endangered) plant species of this area. The exact causes of its decline are still unknown. The authors describe the characteristics of A. montana, the history and methodology of populatio nmonitoring, and possible factors causing the decline and habitat degradation. In 2014, some twigs showing symptoms suggesting attack by wood-boring insects were collected. From these, imagines of an unknown weevil species belonging to the genus Pactola Pascoe (Eugnomini)were reared. The new species is described as Pactola kuscheli Mazur sp. nov. Colour photographs of the dorsal habitus, line drawings of taxono…
Are Red Lists really useful for plant conservation? The New Red List of the Italian Flora in the perspective of national conservation policies
2013
- The New Red List of the Italian Flora includes all the Italian policy species and other species of known conservation concerns for a total of 400 taxa, 65% of which are threatened with extinction. The Red List is based on a huge georeferenced data-set useful for conservation purposes. -
Nitrogen-fixing cushion Astragalus siculus modulates soil fertility, microclimate, plant facilitation, bacterial and fungal microbiota along an eleva…
2023
Question: Cushion-forming vascular plants are adapted to alpine environments and act as ecosystem engineers by moderating microclimate and creating a fertility island under their canopy. Most of the available studies on cushion ecology have been devoted to plant facilitation, but none used a holistic approach that considers the response of co-existing plant species with other key ecosystem players. Here, we quantified the biogenic effect and facilitation capacity of Astragalus siculus, a spiny nitrogen-fixing cushion plant, and test the hypothesis that the facilitation effect would increase with elevation as stress gradient.Location: Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in the Mediterrane…
