Assessing Effects of Temperature Change on Four Limonium Species from Threatened Mediterranean Salt-Affected Habitats

2018

[EN] Evaluation of tolerance to temperatures in the germination stage is an important tool to foresee the possible effect of global warming. Moreover, establishing germination protocols for endemic and threatened species is most interesting for restoration and management plans that focus on habitat conservation. Seed germination was analysed in four species of the genus Limonium (L. virgatum, L. narbonense, L. girardianum and L. santapolense) growing in two saline habitats on the eastern coast of the Iberian Peninsula. The study aim was to compare responses of seed germination to different temperature regimes. Seeds were collected in two protected areas, `L¿Albufera de Valencia¿ (province o…

Seed germination reports of high mountain species native to Mount Etna (Sicily)

2020

The germination ability of five endemic species from the high mountain belt of Mt. Etna were studied; they are Astragalus siculus, Erysimum etnense, Senecio squalidus subsp. aethnensis, Silene italica subsp. sicula, and Tanacetum vulgare subsp. siculum. Mature seeds were collected in the field, within an elevation range of 1700–2000 m a.s.l. Different experimental conditions were tested and the best methods with optimal germination results are provided and compared for each species. First germination records are given for 4 out of 5 of the investigated taxa.

The use of herbarium specimens in evaluating plant extinction risks: some considerations on Sicilian endemics

2019

Herbarium specimens provide verifiable and citable evidence of the occurrence of plant taxa at a given place and time. Thus they caΩn be used to identify native ranges, and document which plants are occurring, and where, through time. They provide information on rare, extirpated, or extinct species that can no longer be found in nature. Furthermore, they can serve as a means of locating rare or possibly extinct species, recollecting in the area(s) reported on labels. Thus, herbarium specimens can be used as primary sources of data to have evidence-based extinction risk assessments. Each extinction risk assessments is an evidence-based hypothesis of the current level of extinction risk of a …

Pyrus ciancioi (Rosaceae), a new species from Sicily

2012

A new species of Pyrus L. from the Nebrodi Mountains (NE Sicily) is described, named, and illustrated. It differs from P. spinosa in the shape and diameter/length ratio of its fruits and in the width/length ratio of the leaf lamina. An analytical key to the Pyrus species growing in Sicily is provided.

Seed germination data of three Hieracium and one Pilosella (Asteraceae) from Sicily and southern Italy

2020

This work reports the first seed germination data of three Hieracium and one Pilosella (Asteraceae) taxa from Sicily and southern Italy. The studied taxa are: Hieracium hypochoeroides subsp. cilentanum, endemic to Campania, H. schmidtii subsp. nebrodense, endemic to Sicily, H. terraccianoi, endemic to Calabria and Pilosella hoppeana subsp. sicula, endemic to Sicily. The obtained results showed that the investigated taxa produce non-dormant seeds, with a high percentage of germination at all tested thermoperiods (15°C to 25°C and the alternating temperature of 25/15°C). Germination tests carried out in gibberellic acid (GA3) provided similar germination percentages. The data presented in thi…

Sorbus busambarensis (Rosaceae), a new endemic species of Sicily

2012

Abstract In this study, Sorbus busambarensis, a new species from Rocca Busambra (Palermo, NW Sicily) has been described and named. On the basis of the critical features of its flowers, fruits and leaves, it is noted to be a member of S. sect. Aria and is related to the other taxa that form the polymorphic group of S. aria, which in Sicily is represented by S. aria s. str., S. graeca and S. umbellata.

Teucrium ronnigeri Sennen (Lamiaceae) y sus variaciones

2009

Genetic diversity in theCentaurea cinerariagroup (Compositae) in Sicily using isozymes

2006

Abstract The genetic diversity of seven taxa endemic to Sicily, C. cineraria, C. busambarensis, C. ucriae subsp. ucriae, C. ucriae subsp. umbrosa, C. todari, C. erycina and C. saccensis, from 11 localities was investigated using isozymes. Eight loci from five enzyme systems (IDH, MDH, PGD, PGM and PGI) were examined. A total of 19 alleles were identified, some rare and two of them exclusive to different populations. The allelic frequencies and the genetic variability values for each population were calculated. On the whole, the genetic diversity, i.e., average polymorphism (P) = 0.41, average number of alleles per locus (A) = 1.75, Nei's gene diversity (H) = 0.18, is moderate, with the high…
