Whereas the day/night rhythm of melatonin synthesis is adrenergically regulated, data on the adrenergic regulation of SR numbers in the rat pineal gland are at variance. Recombinant human alpha-interferon is now under intensive investigation as therapy for chronic Type B hepatitis. Recent reports have suggested that prolonged alpha-interferon therapy may induce autoimmune reactions. We have evaluated the problem of autoimmunity related to alpha-interferon therapy by testing for 15 different antibodies in the sera of 31 patients treated with alpha-interferon. No patient had autoantibodies before treatment; 27 (87%) of 31 patients developed at least one autoantibody. European disparities in malignant digestive endocrine tumours survival.

The aim of this study was to report on malignant digestive endocrine tumours (MDET) prognosis in several European countries. We analysed survival data from 19 cancer registries in 12 European countries on 3,715 MDET diagnosed between 1985 and 1994. The overall 5-year survival rate was 47.5%. It was 58.1% for differentiated MDET and 8.1% for small-cell MDET (p < 0.001), 55.9% for patients under 65 and 37.0% for older patients. Survival rates for small intestinal and colorectal were higher than for the other sites. Abstract The function of acetylcholine (ACh) in the mammalian pineal gland is unknown. To test the hypothesis that ACh exerts a modulatory role in this organ, in the present study electrophysiogical multiunit recordings were carried out in ex-vivo rat pineal glands superfused with different drugs. It was found that ACh (10 −7 M) as well as the cholinergic agonists oxotremorine (10 −7 M) and nicotine (10 −6 M) increased the discharge rates of most of the spontaneously active units and led to burst activity in previously regularly firing cells. In the rat pineal gland N-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and synaptic ribbon (SR) numbers display a circadian rhythm. It is well-known that NAT activity is regulated by adrenergic mechanisms involving cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) as a second messenger. However, the mechanism involved in the regulation of SR numbers has not been established so far. In the present in vitro study, we have investigated the effects of 8-bromo-cyclic guanosine monophosphate (8-bromo-cGMP), a cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) analog, and stimulation of guanylate cyclase on SR numbers. Extracellular multiple unit recordings were performed in isolated rat pineal glands to determine a possible effect of nitric oxide (NO) on the spontaneous electrical activity of pinealocytes. Spontaneously active cells forming clusters of 3-5 cells fell into two categories: more or less regularly firing clusters (REG, 64%) and irregularly discharging clusters with periodically repeated bursts (RHY, 36%). The NO-donor sodium nitroprusside (SNP) reduced the discharge rate of the great majority of REG clusters and of all the RHY clusters examined. ‘Synaptic’ Bodies in the Pineal Glands of the Cow, Sheep and Pig

The present results show that ‘synaptic’ bodies (SB) are a heterogeneous group of organelles in the pineal glands of Artiodactyla. Basically, rod-like (ribbons) and sphere-like (spherules) SB can be distinguished. In the pig small numbers of both ‘synaptic’ ribbons (SR) and ‘synaptic’ spherules (SS) are found. In bovine and ovine pineal glands few SS but no SR were seen. The same results were obtained from animals of the same species but from different continents. This suggests that the numbers of SB are species specific rather than influenced by the different lighting conditions in Europe and in equatorial Africa.

Recent studies have shown that in rat pineal glands kept in vitro action potential-producing cell clusters are demonstrable. To test whether the clusters interact, multiple-unit recordings were carried out simultaneously from different clusters, with or without electrical stimulation. Clusters with rhythmic burst activity exhibit highly synchronized firing and electrical stimulation of one cluster elicits an immediate response in another one, apparently involving synapses but not gap junctions. Recent literature suggests that sarcopenia, often represented by low lower limbs muscle mass and strength, can be considered a potential risk factor for knee osteoarthritis (OA), but the available literature is still limited. We therefore aimed to investigate whether sarcopenia is associated with a higher risk of radiographic (ROA) and symptomatic knee OA (SxOA) in a large cohort of North American people in the context of the OA initiative.
