Vaporization Characteristics of Ethanol Droplets: Influence of the Environment Humidity

2011

The study of the gasification of a droplet via vaporization, which involves heat, mass and momentum transfer processes in gas and liquid phases, and their coupling at the droplet interface, is necessary for better understanding and modeling of complex spray and mixture formation issues. A detailed description of the vaporization of an isolated droplet has been realized in this experimental study aimed at investigating the impact of the water vapor contained in the surrounding gas on the evaporation of an ethanol droplet. The experimental set-up consists of a heated chamber with a cross quartz fibers configuration as droplet support. An ethanol droplet is located at the intersection of the c…

Allocation of Ambipolar Charges on an Organic Diradical with a Vinylene-Phenylenediyne Bridge.

2021

Two redox and magnetically active perchlorotriphenylmethyl (• PTM) radical units have been connected as end-capping groups to a bis(phenylene)diyne chain through vinylene linkers. Negative and positive charged species have been generated, and the influence of the bridge on their stabilization is discussed. Partial reduction of the electron-withdrawing • PTM radicals results in a class-II mixed-valence system with the negative charge located on the terminal PTM units, proving the efficiency of the conjugated chain for the electron transport between the two terminal sites. Counterintuitively, the oxidation process does not occur along the electron-rich bridge but on the vinylene units. The • …

Measuring mutagenicity in ecotoxicology: A case study of Cd exposure in Chironomus riparius.

2021

Abstract Existing mutagenicity tests for metazoans lack the direct observation of enhanced germline mutation rates after exposure to anthropogenic substances, therefore being inefficient. Cadmium (Cd) is a metal described as a mutagen in mammalian cells and listed as a group 1 carcinogenic and mutagenic substance. But Cd mutagenesis mechanism is not yet clear. Therefore, in the present study, we propose a method coupling short-term mutation accumulation (MA) lines with subsequent whole genome sequencing (WGS) and a dedicated data analysis pipeline to investigate if chronic Cd exposure on Chironomus riparius can alter the rate at which de novo point mutations appear. Results show that Cd exp…

Cilium induction triggers differentiation of glioma stem cells

2020

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) possesses glioma stem cells (GSCs) that promote self-renewal, tumor propagation, and relapse. GBM has a poor prognosis, and currently, there are no curative options exist. Understanding the mechanisms of GSCs self-renewal can offer targeted therapeutic interventions. However, insufficient knowledge of the fundamental biology of GSCs is a significant bottleneck hindering these efforts. Here, we show that patient-derived GSCs recruit an elevated level of proteins that ensure the temporal cilium disassembly, leading to suppressed ciliogenesis. Depleting the cilia disassembly complex components at the ciliary base is sufficient to induce ciliogenesis in a subset of…

Stress and memory performance in older men and women: The role of the Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal axis

2011

When we refer to the HPA-axis, we are referring to a complex communication system that encompasses three different regions of our body. This communication system is crucial for our survival, because it is an important part of our defense when faced with threats, and because it coordinates the re-establishment of homeostasis when the threat is over. Therefore, the activity of the HPA-axis is a part of the stressresponse, and its main function is to improve our chances of survival in the presence of threats to our physical or psychological well-being. Communication is established between the hypothalamus, the pituitary gland and the adrenal gland through the release of hormones (see figure 1)…

In vitro evaluation of glycol chitosan based formulations as oral delivery systems for efflux pump inhibition.

2017

Recently, we have reported that glycol chitosan (GCS) was able to reverse the P- glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux pump. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential of two GCS-based dosage forms (aqueous solution or nanoparticle suspension) for oral administration of the P-gp substrate Rho-123. A further aim of the present study was to assess the effect of the glycol chitosan-4-thiobutylamidine thiomer (GCS-TBA) on P-gp activity considering that the corresponding thiomer of chitosan series is a well-known P-gp inhibitor. Pre-treatment of Caco-2 cell monolayer with a GCS solution or GCS-based nanoparticles increased the absorptive transport of Rho-123 across the monolayer of 1.…

Higher plants possess two different types of ATX1-like copper chaperones.

2007

Abstract Copper (Cu) chaperones constitute a family of small Cu+-binding proteins required for Cu homeostasis in eukaryotes. The ATX1 family of Cu chaperones specifically delivers Cu to heavy metal P-type ATPases. The plant Arabidopsis thaliana expresses the ATX1-like Cu chaperone CCH, which exhibits a plant-specific carboxy-terminal domain (CTD) with unique structural properties. We show that CCH homologues from other higher plants contain CTDs with structural properties similar to Arabidopsis CCH. Furthermore, we identify a new ATX1-like Cu chaperone in Arabidopsis, AtATX1, which functionally complements yeast atx1Δ and sod1Δ associated phenotypes, and localizes to the cytosol of Arabidop…
