Humic acid reduces gonadotropin activity and hormonal sensitivity of frog oocytes
2005
The specific stimulatory effect of sturgeon Acipenser güldenstädti Br. gonadotropic hormone (GTH) on frog Rana temporaria L. oocyte maturation in vitro was investigated in relation to humic acid (HA) concentrations from 12.5 to 50 mg/l. HA was observed to bind to both the follicular membrane of the oocytes and the GTH molecule, reducing the oocytes' hormone sensitivity and maturation ability. It was also shown that HA inactivated GTH, lowering its specific ability to stimulate oocyte maturation.
Increased LH and FSH release from the anterior pituitary of ovariectomized rat, in vivo, by copper-, nickel-, and zinc-LHRH complexes.
1992
Abstract The effect of Cu 2+ , Ni 2+ , Zn 2+ and their complexes with LHRH on the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) was estimated in in vivo experiments with the use of the method proposed by Ramirez and McCann. Ovariectomized, estradiol, and progesterone pretreated rats were injected intraveneously either with LHRH alone, a metal ion alone, a mixture of metal and hormone, or a metal-LHRH complex. A metal alone or a mixture of it with LHRH did not affect gonadotropin release at all or no more than LHRH alone. However, the complex of Cu 2+ with LHRH brought about a high release of LH and even higher release of FSH. This indicates that copper complex i…
Clinical and metabolic findings in a 6-year-old boy with a Leydig cell tumour
2011
Aim: To analyse the urinary steroid metabolome in a boy who had true precocious puberty after a Leydig cell tumour. Method: Case report and detailed description of clinical and metabolic findings in a 7-year-old-boy with a Leydig cell tumour. Results: Before surgery, the urinary steroid metabolome showed an activation of an alternative route to gonadal androgens independent of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA). After surgery, the boy entered true precocious puberty. Under leuprolide acetate treatment, clinical and laboratory findings normalized. Conclusion: Central precocious puberty after precocious pseudopuberty may be more common than expected and should be considered in children with pe…
Awake tracheotomy in a patient with stridor and dyspnoea caused by a sizeable malignant thyroid tumor: a case report and short review of the literatu…
2017
Key Clinical Message Individual airway management is mandatory in patients with large goiters undergoing thyroid surgery. Preoperative endoscopic airway evaluation and imaging studies can support clinical decision making. Awake tracheotomy can be an effective and reasonable airway management strategy in such patients.
Thyrotrophin-releasing hormone-a lactation-promoting agent?
1991
Objective— To study the lactational and hormonal responses to nasal administration of thyrotrophin-releasing hormone (TRH) in puerperal women with inadequate lactation. Design— Prospective randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study. Subjects— 19 puerperal women with inadequate lactation (<50% of normal milk yield) on the 5th day postpartum. Interventions— 10 women were allocated to receive TRH administered by a nasal spray of 1 mg, four times daily, between suckling episodes, for 10 consecutive days starting on day 6 postpartum. Nine women were allocated to receive placebo sprays. Main outcome measures— Daily milk yield, serum levels of prolactin and thyroid hormones. Results— Before …
Cilium induction triggers differentiation of glioma stem cells.
2020
Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) possesses glioma stem cells (GSCs) that promote self-renewal, tumor propagation, and relapse. Understanding the mechanisms of GSCs self-renewal can offer targeted therapeutic interventions. However, insufficient knowledge of GSCs' fundamental biology is a significant bottleneck hindering these efforts. Here, we show that patient-derived GSCs recruit elevated levels of proteins that ensure the temporal cilium disassembly, leading to suppressed ciliogenesis. Depleting the cilia disassembly complex components is sufficient to induce ciliogenesis in a subset of GSCs via relocating platelet-derived growth factor receptor-alpha (PDGFR-α) to a newly induced cilium. Im…
Effect of digitonin on membrane-bound and chitosomal chitin synthetase activity in protoplasts from yeast cells ofCandida albicans
1993
The effect of digitonin on chitin synthetase present in membrane (MMF) and cytoplasmic fractions (chitosomes) (CF) from C. albicans yeast protoplasts has been determined. The zymogen is preferentially, but not exclusively, solubilized by digitonin from MMF. Centrifugation of distinct solubilized preparations, containing either zymogen, in vivo active enzyme and/or trypsin activated enzyme, on linear sucrose gradients suggests that both zymogen and trypsin activated enzyme sediment slightly slower than the active enzyme, pointing out differences between the activation processes in vivo and in vitro or, alternatively, that both enzyme activities (active in vivo and zymogenic) correspond to di…
Binge eating of a high fat diet during adolescence modulates the rewarding effects of ethanol
2018
Binge-eating is considered a specific form of overeating characterized by intermittent and high caloric food intake in a short period of time. Epidemiologic studies support a positive relation between the ingestion of fat and ethanol (EtOH), specifically among adolescent subjects. The aim of this work was to clarify the role of the compulsive, limited and intermittent intake of a high-fat food during adolescence on the rewarding effects of EtOH. After binge eating for 2 h, three days a week from postnatal day 29, the reinforcing effects of EtOH were tested with EtOH self-administration (SA) and conditioned place preference (CPP). Animals in the high fat binge (HFB) group that underwent the …
Comparative Morphology of the Vertebrate Pineal Complex
1979
Publisher Summary This chapter explores whether there is evidence for the assumption that the mammalian pineal organ is a complex rather than a single organ with a uniform function. It is pointed out that the pineal organ is structurally very complex, especially in rodents. The uneven development of the pineal organ in rodents and the topographical relationships of the pineal organs in other mammalian orders have prompted a classification which is based on the shape, the size, and localization of the pineal organ. A tentative classification of the pineal organs of thoroughly studied species shows that closely related species have similar types of pineals. Based on the different localization…
