2007
The aim of this study is to estudy lingual and labial microcirculation differences among healthy subjects and those with Hashimoto's thyroiditis affected by macroglossia. Twenty healthy patients and 20 patients suffering from Hashimoto's thyroiditis were examined. Labial and lingual capiUaroscopy were used to investigate the characteristics of microcirculation. For each patient we evaluated visibility, course, tortuosity and the possible presence of microhaemorrhages, average calibre of capillary loops and the number of visible capillary loops per square millimetre. The investigations of the labial and lingual mucous were simple, non invasive and repeatable for each patient. In Hashimoto's …
Sperm quality, secondary sexual characters and parasitism in roach (Rutilus rutilus L.)
2004
According to sperm competition models, a male spawning in a disfavoured role should have spermatozoa with higher velocity but shorter longevity compared with a male spawning in a favoured role. Moreover, immunosuppressive androgens are needed to produce both secondary sexual characters and sperm cells. The ‘sperm protection’ hypothesis suggests that the immunosuppressive action of androgens has evolved to protect haploid spermatozoa, which are antigenic, from autoimmune attacks. Therefore, a male with high sexual ornamentation may be more susceptible to diseases but may possess better quality ejaculate than his less ornamented rival. We studied sexual ornamentation (breeding tubercles), eja…

Standardization of sampling and staining methods for the morphometric evaluation of sperm heads in the Cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) using …
2005
Automated sperm morphology analysis (ASMA) technology has improved the assessment of sperm morphology, but the results depend on the use of adequate and standardized procedures. In this study the Sperm-Class Analyzer® (SCA) ASMA system was used to assess sperm head morphometry in the Cynomolgus monkey and to evaluate the influence of sample size, intraslide variation, and the use of three staining techniques on the accuracy of image processing and sperm head morphometry. Haematoxylin is the staining technique of choice for Cynomolgus spermatozoa, as optimum contrast of sperm heads with the surrounding background allows efficient segmentation, i.e. sperm head boundary detection, making the i…
Use of the Sperm-Class Analyser® for objective assessment of human sperm morphology
2003
The Sperm-Class Analyser was validated for assessing morphometric parameters of the head and midpiece of unwashed and washed human ejaculated spermatozoa from volunteers providing a wide range of semen quality. A higher proportion of sperm could be assessed (86% fresh semen and 75% washed sperm) if Hemacolor staining was used rather than DiffQuik (80 and 73%) or Papanicolaou (78 and 68%). Different stains employed different fixatives and the area, length, width and perimeter of the sperm head was significantly larger for washed sperm stained by Hemacolor and DiffQuik. Acrosomal area ranged from 48 to 51% of the sperm head area and this percentage was larger for washed sperm stained with Dif…
Antioxidants in ICSI
2013
Male factor infertility can be caused by reasons, either related or not with total sperm production. Among causes of male infertility in cases of normal sperm count and motility, oxidative stress is one of the most relevant processes influencing fertility in vivo or in assisted reproduction treatments’ results. This chapter provides the most updated information regarding the oxidative stress situation in sperm and the relevance of antioxidants use in intracytoplasmic sperm injection results.
