Data from: Effects of photoperiod on life-history and thermal stress resistance traits across populations of Drosophila subobscura
2019
Intro: Organisms use environmental cues to match their phenotype with the future availability of resources and environmental conditions. Changes in the magnitude and frequency of environmental cues such as photoperiod and temperature along latitudes can be used by organisms to predict seasonal changes. While the role of temperature variation on the induction of plastic and seasonal responses is well established, the importance of photoperiod for predicting seasonal changes is less explored. M&M: Here we studied changes in life-history and thermal stress resistance traits in Drosophila subobscura in response to variation in photoperiod (6:18, 12:12 and 18:6 light:dark cycles) mimicking s…
Data from: Strategic adjustments in sperm production within and between two island populations of house mice
2013
Sperm production is physiologically costly. Consequently, males are expected to be prudent in their sperm production, and tailor their expenditure according to prevailing social conditions. Differences in sperm production have been found across island populations of house mice that differ in the level of selection from sperm competition. Here, we determined the extent to which these differences represent phenotypic plasticity and/or population divergence in sperm production. We sourced individuals from two populations at the extreme levels of sperm competition, and raised them under common-garden conditions while manipulating the social experience of developing males. Males from the high-sp…
Prevalence of acne vulgaris among women with polycystic ovary syndrome: a systemic review and meta-analysis.
2020
The aim of this meta-analysis was to evaluate the prevalence of acne among women with PCOS worldwide, and in subgroups of patients with different age, geographical-region, and PCOS definition-criteria, compared to healthy non-PCOS counterparts. A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed (including Medline), Web of Science, and Scopus databases for retrieving articles in English investigating the prevalence of PCOS. ‘Meta-prop’ method was applied to estimate pooled prevalence of acne in both groups. Meta-regression was conducted to find the association between acne in women with and without PCOS. We used 60 studies, included data of 240,213 women with PCOS and 1,902,022 health…
Ovarian volume in normal and hyperandrogenic adolescent women
2015
Objective To study the threshold for increased ovarian size during different periods of adolescence. Design Cross sectional study with retrospective analysis. Setting University center. Patient(s) A total of 146 hyperandrogenic adolescent women and 72 healthy adolescent controls. Intervention(s) Intravaginal or transabdominal ovarian sonography. Main Outcome Measure(s) Determination of normal ovarian size during the different phases of adolescence calculated using the ellipsoid formula; calculation of threshold for increased ovarian size during different adolescent gynecologic ages and prevalence of increased ovarian size for hyperandrogenic girls at different gynecologic ages. Result(s) In…
Endocrine Challenges in Patients with Continuous-Flow Left Ventricular Assist Devices
2021
Heart failure (HF) remains a leading cause of morbidity, hospitalization, and mortality worldwide. Advancement of mechanical circulatory support technology has led to the use of continuous-flow left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), reducing hospitalizations, and improving quality of life and outcomes in advanced HF. Recent studies have highlighted how metabolic and endocrine dysfunction may be a consequence of, or associated with, HF, and may represent a novel (still neglected) therapeutic target in the treatment of HF. On the other hand, it is not clear whether LVAD support, may impact the outcome by also improving organ perfusion as well as improving the neuro-hormonal state of the pat…
The Influence of Treated and Untreated Subclinical Hypothyroidism on Metabolic Profile in Women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome.
2021
Background. Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and hypothyroidism are the most common endocrinological disorders among women of reproductive age. Since hypothyroidism occurs more frequently in PCOS patients, it is vital to explain its clinical impact. Aim. To evaluate the impact of subclinical hypothyroidism (SCH) and its treatment on the metabolic profile of patients with PCOS. Methods. 190 women with PCOS phenotype A were enrolled in the case-control study. They were divided into three groups: 38 women with PCOS and subclinical hypothyroidism, 76 women with PCOS and SCH under thyroid replacement therapy, and 76 women with PCOS and normal thyroid function (control group). Serum lipids, fasti…
Steroid activities comparison of natural and food wrap compounds in human breast cancer cell lines
2004
Abstract In this study, we tested and compared the endocrine disruption activities of compounds in materials used to package foods (bisphenol A, bisphenol F, and bisphenol A diglycidylether BADGE) with natural molecules (genistein, apigenin, kaempferol, and tangeretin) in the human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 (ER + ) and MDA-MB453 (AR + ; GR + ). Octylphenol was also chosen as a xenoestrogen reference. Two compounds had no estrogenic activity: BADGE and tangeretin. Genistein was the most active compound in the E-Screen assay with MCF-7, followed by octylphenol, bisphenol F, bisphenol A and apigenin, with kaempferol the least potent. All estrogenic compounds competed with 17β-estradiol fo…
Hepatocellular carcinoma with macrovascular invasion: multimodality imaging features for the diagnosis
2020
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is frequently associated with macrovascular invasion of the portal vein or hepatic veins in advanced stages. The accurate diagnosis of macrovascular invasion and the differentiation from bland non-tumoral thrombus has significant clinical and management implications, since it narrows the therapeutic options and it represents a mandatory con-traindication for liver resection or transplantation. The imaging diagnosis remains particularly challenging since the imaging features of HCC with macrovascular invasion may be subtle, espe-cially in lesions showing infiltrative appearance. However, each radiologic imaging modality may provide findings suggesting the prese…
Reduced incidence of type 2 diabetes in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection cleared by direct-acting antiviral therapy: A prospective s…
2020
Aim HCV infection increases the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, it remains still unclear whether HCV clearance by direct-acting antivirals (DAA) reduces T2DM. Therefore, the effect of HCV eradication on T2DM incidence was assessed. Methods A prospective multicenter case-control study was performed, which included 2,426 HCV patients, 42% of which with liver fibrosis F0-F2 and 58% F3-F4. Study population consisted of a control group including 1099 untreated patients and 1327 cases treated with DAA. T2DM incidence was assessed during a follow-up median period of 30 [IQR: 28-42] months. Risk factors of T2DM were assessed by Cox regression model (Relative risk (RR), Hazard risk…
Diagnosis, monitoring and management of immune-related adverse drug reactions of anti-PD-1 antibody therapy.
2015
PD-1 checkpoint inhibitors are associated with a specific spectrum of immune-related adverse events. This spectrum is different from toxicities known for kinase inhibitors or cytotoxic drugs. Since PD-1 directed therapies show effectivity in an increasing number of malignant diseases, their clinical usage will increase rapidly. Therefore clinicians from different specialities such as medical oncology, internal medicine, family doctors and emergency unit staff should be aware of the adverse effects of PD-1 checkpoint inhibitors to avoid delays in diagnosis and treatment. Based on pooled data from pivotal trials as reported by the European Medicines Agency, the present paper reviews incidence…
