Neuropeptide Y effects on pineal melatonin synthesis in the rat

Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity is present in the rodent pineal gland. To elucidate possible effects on pineal melatonin synthesis NPY (5 nmol/kg body wt.) was injected into the common carotid artery of male rats. Activities of the melatonin biosynthetic enzymes, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (NAT) and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) were determined by means of radioenzymatic methods. Intact light-exposed animal showed increased NAT activity at day- and at nighttime. Blinded animals showed a more than 10-fold reduction of NAT activity after nocturnal NPY injections. Several studies have shown that acute stress affects working memory (WM) in young adults, but the effect in older people is understudied. As observed in other types of memory, older people may be less sensitive to acute effects of stress on WM. We performed two independent studies with healthy older men and women (from 55 to 77 years old) to investigate the effects of acute stress (Trier Social Stress Test; TSST) and cortisol on WM. We retrospectively compared the clinical outcomes of adults with acute leukemia who received single-unit umbilical cord blood (UCB) transplantation (sUCBT) (n = 135) or stem cell transplant using coinfusion of a UCB graft with CD34+ cells from a third-party donor (Haplo-Cord) (n = 72) at different institutions within the Grupo Espanol de Trasplante Hematopoyetico. High-resolution real-time sonography was performed in 15 cases of clinically and chemically suspected primary hyperparathyroidism and in 20 patients with different thyroid nodules. The suspected enlarged parathyroid glands and the thyroid nodules were percutaneously punctured under sonographic control. Concentrations of parathyroid hormone, human thyroglobulin, and human calcitonin were measured in the aspirate, and immunocytology was performed. The response of circulating leukocytes to thyroid subcellular fractions was investigated in 19 patients with Graves' disease, 15 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis, 7 patients with toxic adenoma, 19 patients with nontoxic goiter and in 10 healthy students as control subjects. For this purpose, the leukocyte migration test of Soborg and Bendixen was performed against human crude thyroid extract (CTE), cell plasma membranes, nuclei, ribosomes, mitochondria and microsomes. The age-dependent prevalence and topographical distribution of colorectal adenomas was investigated in 1006 unselected autopsies (554 males and 452 females) in Mainz, FRG. In 200 out of 1006 autopsies (19.8%) a total of 498 adenomas of the large intestine were detected. The percentage of patients with adenomas increased continuously with age. Only 6% of all adenomas were localized in the caecum and 8% in the rectum, whereas all the other adenomas were distributed rather evenly throughout the ascending colon (23%), the transverse colon (25%), the descending colon (15%) and the sigmoid colon (23%). Toxic adenoma and papillary thyroid carcinoma in a patient with Graves' disease.

A case of a very rare association of toxic adenoma and papillary carcinoma with Graves’ disease is presented. A 34-year-old woman developed Graves’ disease with mild ophthalmopathy. An ultrasound revealed diffuse thyroid enlargement with a hypoechoic pattern and a hypoechoic nodule with regular edges of 1.6 cm in diameter at the lower pole of the left lobe. A thyroid 131I scintiscan showed a diffuse and homogeneous 131I distribution. The 131I uptake (RAIU) was elevated.
