Cortisol reactivity in social anxiety disorder: A highly standardized and controlled study.

Abstract In order to understand the psychopathology of the social anxiety disorder (SAD) at the neuroendocrine level, standardized experimental studies on endocrine and physiological markers are necessary, especially since empirical data are still ambiguous. Hence, differences in both, the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the endocrine stress responses (ACTH, salivary and plasma cortisol) were investigated in a particularly homogenous sample after a standardized stressor (Trier Social Stress Test). Endurance Exercise and Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) Supplementation Up-Regulate CYP17A1 and Stimulate Testosterone Biosynthesis

A new role for fat supplements, in particular conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), has been delineated in steroidogenesis, although the underlying molecular mechanisms have not yet been elucidated. The aims of the present study were to identify the pathway stimulated by CLA supplementation using a cell culture model and to determine whether this same pathway is also stimulated in vivo by CLA supplementation associated with exercise. The differential influences of melanocortins on nociception in the formalin and tail flick tests

Melanocortins exert multiple physiological effects that include the modulation of immune responses, inflammation processes, and pain transmission. In the present study we investigated the peripheral activity of natural melanocortins - alpha-, beta-, gamma1- and gamma2-melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) - and melanocortin receptor subtypes 3 and 4 (MC3/4 receptor) antagonist HS014 in pain (formalin and tail flick) tests after peptide subcutaneous administration in mice. 24-hour-variation of pineal gland volume, pinealocyte nuclear volume and mitotic activity in male Sprague-Dawley rats

In two experiments carried out on two alternate days, the 24-h-rhythmicity of pineal gland volume, pinealocyte nuclear size in cortex and medulla and mitotic activity were studied in male Sprague-Dawley rats, to assess to what extent morphological parameters reflect the pronounced day/night differences in pineal melatonin formation. Pineal volume exhibited statistically significant changes in the second experiment only, with a distinct trough at 6 p.m. Karyometry revealed highly variable patterns. Interplay between PACAP and NO in mouse ileum

Abstract We investigated the possibility that pituitary adenylate cyclase activating peptide (PACAP) has a role in the control of contractility in the mouse ileum. PACAP-(1-27) produced tetrodotoxin (TTX)-insensitive, concentration-dependent reduction of the amplitude of the spontaneous contractions of longitudinal muscle up to their complete disappearance. This effect was inhibited by PACAP-(6-38), PACAP receptor antagonist, and by apamin, blocker of small-conductance Ca2+-activated K+-channels. Nω-nitro- l -arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), nitric oxide (NO) synthase inhibitor, reduced the PACAP-inhibitory response, and the joint application of apamin plus L-NAME produced additive effects. …

Two novel mutations in the human thyroid peroxidase (TPO) gene: genetics and clinical findings in four children

UNLABELLED We report four children originating from two unrelated German families with congenital hypothyroidism (CH) due to mutations in the thyroid peroxidase (TPO) gene. Three female siblings (family 1) were found to be compound heterozygous for two mutations, a known mutation in exon 9 (W527C), and a mutation in exon 8 (Q446H), which has not been described before. In the second family we identified a boy with goitrous CH, who had a novel homozygous mutation in the TPO gene in exon 16 (W873X). All children of family 1 were diagnosed postnatally by newborn screening. The case of the boy of family 2 has already been reported for the in utero treatment of a goiter with hypothyroidism. CONCL…

Interleukin-1 inhibits drinking behaviour through prostaglandins, but not by nitric oxide formation

Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) causes inhibition of drinking behaviour. Moreover it induces formation of prostaglandins (PGs) and nitric oxide (NO). Both PGs and NO are able to inhibit drinking stimulated by water deprivation or by intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) administration of angiotensin II. In this study, we studied in the preoptic area (POA) the possible role of PGs and NO in the antidipsogenic action induced by IL-1 beta. Case report: Noonan syndrome with multiple giant cell lesions and review of the literature.

Noonan syndrome with multiple giant cell lesions (NS/MGCL) was recently shown to be a phenotypic variation within the syndromes of the Ras/MAPK pathway and not an independent entity as previously thought. Here we report on a 13-year-old boy with a typical phenotype of NS including atrial septal defect, pulmonic stenosis, short stature, and combined pectus carinatum/excavatum, pronounced MGCL of both jaws, and a de novo mutation in PTPN11, c.236A>G (which predicts p.Q79R).
