Series of fibrinous inflammation after implantation of capsular tension rings

2014

Purpose To analyze the cause of fibrinous inflammation in eyes with capsular tension rings (CTRs) after cataract surgery. Setting Department of Ophthalmology, University Medical Center, Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz, Mainz, Germany. Design Retrospective case series. Methods High-performance liquid chromatography was implemented to eliminate impurities. One CTR was explanted for microbiologic examination. The pH values of the CTR and the storage solution were analyzed, Seldi and Maldi tests were performed, as well as toxicity tests with immortal cell lines. Material batches were analyzed. The organic carbon content of CTRs, detergents, and storage solutions was checked. The presence of…

The Effectiveness of 0.6% Povidone Iodine Eye Drops in Reducing the Conjunctival Bacterial Load and Needle Contamination in Patients Undergoing Anti-…

2019

The study purpose was to assess the efficacy of a preservative-free 0.6% povidone iodine eye drops as perioperative prophylactic treatment for reducing conjunctival bacterial load and the rate of needle contamination in patients undergoing intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injection. Enrolled patients were randomized to either the study group (0.6% povidone iodine, three day-prophylactic treatment before the injection) or to the control group (placebo, three day-prophylactic treatment). Conjunctival swabs were obtained before and after the prophylactic treatment in both groups. Intravitreal injections were performed in a sterile fashion. The injection needle and a control…

The posterior chamber phakic refractive lens (PRL): a review

2012

Implantation of phakic intraocular lenses (pIOLs) is a reversible refractive procedure, preserving the patient’s accommodative function with minimal induction of higher order aberrations compared with corneal photoablative procedures. Despite this, as an intraocular procedure, it has potential risks such as cataracts, chronic uveitis, pupil ovalization, corneal endothelial cell loss, pigmentary dispersion syndrome, pupillary block glaucoma, astigmatism, or endophthalmitis. Currently, only two models of posterior chamber pIOLs are commercially available, the implantable collammer lens (STAAR Surgical Co.) and the phakic refractive lens (PRL; Zeiss Meditec). The number of published reports on…

POOLED ESTIMATES OF INCIDENCE OF ENDOPHTHALMITIS AFTER INTRAVITREAL INJECTION OF ANTI-VASCULAR ENDOTHELIAL GROWTH FACTOR AGENTS WITH AND WITHOUT TOPI…

2017

Purpose: To assess the effect of topical antibiotic prophylaxis on postoperative endophthalmitis after intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed from inception to March 2016 using PubMed, Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and the Cochrane Library, to identify articles that reported cases of endophthalmitis after intravitreal injection of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents. We used a pooled analysis to estimate the incidence of cases of endophthalmitis who developed after injections performed with and without topical antibiotic prophylaxis. We used regression analysis to explore the effects of stu…

Acute Postcataract Surgery Endophthalmitis Due to Streptococcus Species Differs From Endophthalmitis Due to Staphylococcus Species at Presentation

2009

Purpose: : To correlate the presenting clinical ophthalmic features with the bacterial identification in 100 patients with acute post catarcat endophthalmitis enrolled in the FRench Instutionnal ENdophthalmitis Study (FRIENDS).Methods: : Demographic data, past medical history and initial eye examination were recorded in a standardized form in 100 patients with acute endophthalmitis after cataract extraction (< 6 weeks) in a prospective multicenter study. Relationship between microbiological identification (using conventional cultures and panbacterial PCR) and clinical factors at baseline was studied using univariate (ANOVA).Results: : 100 patients were hospitalized for endophthalmitis treat…

Factors of good visual outcome in acute post-cataract endophthalmitis (friends group)

2009

International audience; Purpose: To analyze initial clinical factors of good visual outcome in patients with acute endophthalmitis following cataract surgery. Methods: A prospective study was performed in 4 University hospital (Dijon, Grenoble, Lyon, Saint-Etienne, FRIENDS group) on 100 patients with acute post-cataract endophthalmitis. Factors related to cataract surgery (complications), the initial presentation and the microbiological identification were analyzed according to the final visual outcome using univariate and multivariate analysis (SPSS 12.0). Results: 46% out of the patients had a final visual acuity less than or equal to 0.3 logMar (good visual outcome) at 6 months while 10%…

Bacterial Contamination of Anterior Chamber Fluid Following Non-complicated Cataract Surgery

1993

Objective: To study the anterior chamber contamination during non-complicated cataract surgery and its relationship with normal conjuctival organisms. Setting: Ophthalmology Department, La Fe Hospital, University of Valencia. Patients: Forty patients who had undergone cataract extraction using either ECCE, phacoemulsification or nucleus fracture methods. Results: Positive cultures of aqueous humour were obtained in 32.5% of cases. The most commonly isolated organism was Staphylococcus coagulase-negative. Only in 7.7% of cases was the microorganism found in the conjunctiva the same as that found in the anterior chamber. The inoculum size ranged between 20 and 160 colonies/ml. One of the case…

Epidemiological evaluation of intraoperative antibiosis as a protective agent against endophthalmitis after cataract surgery.

2006

PURPOSE To evaluate risk factors for endophthalmitis after cataract surgery and to retest recent findings on the protective effect of intraoperative antibiosis and the promoting effect of the clear corneal as compared to sclerocorneal incision. DESIGN Survey study. PARTICIPANTS Five hundred thirty-eight ophthalmosurgical centers in Germany. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE Responder specific endophthalmitis incidence. RESULTS A total of 310 (58%) questionnaires were computed resulting in an overall count of 404 356 cataract surgeries and 291 self-reported endophthalmitis cases (crude rate 0.072%). The risk of postoperative endophthalmitis for sclerocorneal versus clear corneal incisions was not signifi…
