Endoscopy in aneurysm surgery.

2011

BACKGROUND: Surgical clipping with complete occlusion of the aneurysm and preservation of parent, branching, and perforating vessels remains the most definitive treatment for intracranial aneurysms. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the benefit of endoscopic application during microsurgical procedures in a retrospective study. METHODS: One hundred eighty aneurysms were microsurgically treated in 124 operations. Three different applications of endoscopic visualization were used, depending on the respective requirements: inspection before clipping, clipping under endoscopic view, and postclipping evaluation. RESULTS: Of 1380 aneurysms, 292 procedures were done with application of the endoscope. Of these…

Capsule Endoscopy versus Push Enteroscopy in Patients with Occult Gastrointestinal Bleeding

2003

Background Wireless capsule endoscopy is a new method enabling non-invasive diagnostic endoscopy of the entire small intestine. In this study we prospectively examined the diagnostic precision of capsule endoscopy compared with push enteroscopy in patients with occult gastrointestinal bleeding. Methods Between July 2001 and October 2002 we examined 48 patients with suspected disorders of the small intestine using capsule endoscopy. 33 patients with obscure bleeding (19 men, 14 women, mean age 58 +/- 23 years) were prospectively examined using capsule endoscopy and push enteroscopy. Results On average, the patients had been suffering from chronic gastrointestinal bleeding for 30 +/- 36 (1-12…

Transcrestal sinus lift and implant placement using the sinus balloon technique

2011

Objective: A description is made of transcrestal sinus lift using the sinus balloon technique, evaluating the bone height achieved and implant success one year after prosthetic loading. Material and method: Between January and July 2007, transcrestal sinus lift using the sinus balloon technique for dental implant placement was carried out in 6 patients. A panoramic X-ray study and maxillary computed tomography scan were carried out before the operation, in order to discard possible sinus pathology. During the intervention, the integrity of the sinus membrane was evaluated using a Medi Pack Pal endoscope (Farol Store and Co., Tuttlingen, Germany), and the intraoperative complications were an…

Extradural Endoscopic Dissection of the Anterior Skull Base

1998

A study was conducted from February 29, 1996, to March 28, 1996, at the University of Brno's Pathology Institute in the Czech Republic to explore the possible application of craniofacial intracranial endoscopic techniques through minimal skin incisions and trephines in fresh cadavers (3 to 12 hours old). Through the trephines the dura was totally dissected from the bone. After this dissection a standard bicoronal incision and a full craniotomy was performed to assess the integrity of the meninges. This minimally invasive dissection of the skull base with the aid of an endoscope is characterized by fewer skin incisions, thereby avoiding the exposure of subcutaneous tissue, muscle, cranial bo…

Biportal neuroendoscopic microsurgical approaches to the subarachnoid cisterns. A cadaver study.

1996

A preclinical cadaver study was performed to develop the technique of biportal neuroendoscopic dissection in the subarachnoid space of the basal cisterns and to test the feasibility, utility, and safety of this new technique. In 23 fresh post-mortem adult human cadavers and 2 formalin-fixed adult human head specimen a total of 33 biportal endomicrosurgical dissections into and within the basal cisterns were carried out. Following suction of cerebrospinal fluid from the subarachnoid space 0 degree-, 30 degrees-, and 70 degrees-lens-scopes (Aesculap AG, Tuttlingen, Germany) with outer diameters of 4.2 mm and trochars with outer diameters of 5 to 6.5 mm were introduced into the surgical field.…

Endoscopic findings in periapical surgery. A cross-sectional study of 206 roots

2022

A study is made of the findings of high-magnification rigid endoscopy at the root end surface following apicoectomy of teeth subjected to periapical surgery. A cross-sectional study was made of patients subjected to periapical surgery at the Unit of Oral Surgery and Implantology (University of Valencia, Valencia, Spain) between 2011 and 2019. Following apicoectomy, the root end surfaces were inspected, with the evaluation of untreated canals, isthmuses, craze lines, crack lines, opaque dentin and gaps. Likewise, an analysis was made of the association between patient age and the tooth type and restoration and the presence of craze lines, cracks, opaque dentin and gaps. The final sample cons…

Segmentation and Navigation Support of Clinical Data Sets to Simulate the Bronchoscopy and Rhinoscopy

2007

A training and simulation system for therapy planning is developed based on patient specific imaging data. A real endoscope is used for navigation through the virtual patient. For this purpose sensors were built in the endoscope in order to track the translation, rotation and the angle of the distal end. Pre-processing (segmentation, tissue characterization) speeds-up the volume rendering up to real-time. Collision detection enables a realistic fly through the virtual patient.
