Evidence of endothermy in the extinct macropredatory osteichthyan Xiphactinus audax (Teleostei, Ichthyodectiformes)

2020

Xiphactinus audax is the largest macropredatory osteichthyan ever known (Everhart et al., 2010). Some of the largest specimens exceed 5 m in total length, although the discovery of a few large, isolated teeth suggests that this teleost could reach even larger body sizes (Vavrek et al., 2016, and references therein). Fossil remains of this species have only been reported from the Upper Cretaceous of North America, across the Western Interior Basin (Schwimmer et al., 1997; Vavrek et al., 2016). The discovery of several virtually complete individuals in this area has provided valuable information about the anatomy, the dimensions, and the ecology of this species (Cope, 1872; Bardack, 1965). Xi…

Energy intake functions and energy budgets of ectotherms and endotherms derived from their ontogenetic growth in body mass and timing of sexual matur…

2017

Abstract Ectothermic and endothermic vertebrates differ not only in their source of body temperature (environment vs. metabolism), but also in growth patterns, in timing of sexual maturation within life, and energy intake functions. Here, we present a mathematical model applicable to ectothermic and endothermic vertebrates. It is designed to test whether differences in the timing of sexual maturation within an animal's life (age at which sexual maturity is reached vs. longevity) together with its ontogenetic gain in body mass (growth curve) can predict the energy intake throughout the animal's life (food intake curve) and can explain differences in energy partitioning (between growth, repro…

The impact of cooking on meat microstructure studied by low field NMR and Neutron Tomography

2017

International audience; We studied the impact of temperature of cooking on meat microstructure. The cooking temperature was verified by calorimetry, showing the disappearance of endothermic peaks when cooking temperature was increased. These observations correspond to the denaturation of different protein fractions at specific temperatures. 1H-low field NMR and neutron tomography were used to further understand the relationship between the observed protein denaturation and changes in meat microstructure after heating. Hahn’s echo and solid echo NMR sequences were applied to observe fast relaxation time corresponding to rigid protons. These protons were found to be associated with pools of p…

Origin of peak asymmetry and the effect of temperature on solute retention in enantiomer separations on imprinted chiral stationary phases

1995

Abstract In enantiomer separations of d - and l -phenylalanine anlilide ( d,l -PA) on l -PA-imprinted chiral stationary phases (CSPs), the use of an aqueous buffer-organic solvent mixture as mobile phase resulted in improved column efficiency compared with what has previously been observed using mobile phases containing acetic acid as modifier. The dependence of the chromatographic parameters on flow-rate and sample load was studied. A strong dependence of the asymmetry factor ( A s ) of the l -form on sample load and a weak dependence on flow-rate indicate that the non-linear adsorption isotherm is the main reason for the broad peaks observed in this system. Depending on the method used fo…

Effect of stiffness on the phase behavior of cubic lattice chains

2005

Coupling between oxidation kinetics and anisothermal oil flow during deep-fat frying

2021

Deep-fat frying is a cooking technique that has been used continuously since prehistoric times. A domestic deep-fryer heated from the bottom develops significant convection inside the bath cavity. It is responsible for very high heat transfer coefficients and the exposure of the deep-frying oil to the atmospheric oxygen. The continuous conversion of gaseous dioxygen into unstable and reactive hydroperoxides and their subsequent advection throughout the bulk volume is at the origin of the main complaints made of frying which includes issues such as odors, fouling, and generation of several toxic compounds. This study analyzes the coupling between natural convection of triacylglycerols and th…

Sorption Equilibria of Ethanol on Cork

2013

International audience; We report here for the first time a thermodynamic study of gaseous ethanol sorption on raw cork powder and plate. Our study aims at a better understanding of the reactivity of this material when used as a stopper under enological conditions, thus in close contact with a hydroethanolic solution, wine. Sorption−desorption isotherms were accurately measured by thermogravimetry at 298 K in a large range of relative pressures. Sorption enthalpies were determined by calorimetry as a function of loading. Sorption−desorption isotherms exhibit a hysteresis loop probably due to the swelling of the material and the absorption of ethanol. Surprisingly, the sorption enthalpy of e…

Interaction of Mo(CO) 6 and its derivative fragments with the Cu(001) surface: Influence on the decomposition process

2014

A theoretical study on the adsorption and decomposition of molybdenum carbonyl on the copper (001) surface is reported. The adsorption structures and energies of Mo(CO)n molecules (n = 1 … 6) are computed systematically using density functional theory with Van der Waals corrections. By analyzing the energies of the various conformations, the main factors that determine the stable adsorption geometry are identified. Insight into the thermodynamics of decomposition is gained by calculating the reaction energy for dissociation of Mo(CO)n into Mo(CO)n−1 and CO. In the gas phase, this reaction is highly endothermic for all n. On the Cu surface, however, removal of the first CO group (n = 6) beco…

Hydrogen Arrangements on Defective Quasi-Molecular BN Fragments

2019

Considering the ever-increasing interest in metal-free materials, some potential chemical applications of quasi-molecular boron nitride (BN) derivatives were tested. Specifically, the behavior of BN fragments was analyzed when given defects, producing local electron density changes, were introduced by using topological engineering approaches. The inserted structural faults were Schottky-like divacancy (BN-d) defects, assembled in the fragment frame by the subtraction of one pair of B and N atoms or Stone-Wales (SW) defects. This study is aimed at highlighting the role of these important classes of defects in BN materials hypothesizing their future use in H-2-based processes, related to eith…

Computational study of linear carbon chains on gold and silver surfaces

2012

Abstract Density-functional-theory calculations were carried out for hydrogen capped linear carbon chains, polyynes and cumulenes, adsorbed dissociatively on the (1 1 1) and (2 1 1) surfaces of gold and silver. In the studied adsorption reactions, carbon–hydrogen bonds are broken and covalent carbon–metal bonds are created. The adsorption of cumulenes is highly endothermic, whereas the adsorption of polyynes is near thermoneutral. Also, the hydrogenation of adsorbed polyynyl radicals (·C n H) into adsorbed cumulene carbenes (:C n H 2 ) was investigated, which was found to be exothermic on both metals. Vibrational calculations were conducted on the adsorption systems, and the results were co…
