Relationship Between Patient-Reported Outcomes and Clinical Outcomes in Patients With Morquio A Syndrome
2019
Abstract This cross-sectional analysis assessed the correlation between patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and clinical outcomes in 24 German patients with Morquio A. Clinical outcomes included 6-minute walk test (6MWT), 3-minute stair climb (3MSC) test, and joint range of motion as measures for endurance/mobility, forced vital capacity (FVC) and maximum voluntary ventilation (MVV) as measures for respiratory function, and height as an important manifestation. The PROs included the EuroQoL (EQ) 5D-5L (EQ5D-5L), to measure health-related QoL (HRQoL), and patients’ rating of their ability to walk, climb, or breathe. In adults, endurance and pulmonary function measures and height showed strong a…
Oral administration of vitamin C decreases muscle mitochondrial biogenesis and hampers training-induced adaptations in endurance performance
2008
Background Exercise practitioners often take vitamin C supplements because intense muscular contractile activity can result in oxidative stress, as indicated by altered muscle and blood glutathione concentrations and increases in protein, DNA, and lipid peroxidation. There is, however, considerable debate regarding the beneficial health effects of vitamin C supplementation. Objective This study was designed to study the effect of vitamin C on training efficiency in rats and in humans. Design The human study was double-blind and randomized. Fourteen men (27-36 y old) were trained for 8 wk. Five of the men were supplemented daily with an oral dose of 1 g vitamin C. In the animal study, 24 mal…
Effects of added endurance or strength training on cardiovascular and neuromuscular performance of conscripts during the 8-week basic training period
2010
The present series of studies investigated changes in Finnish conscripts’ body composition, aerobic fitness and muscle endurance profiles during the last three decades. A second aim was to examine the effects of added endurance (ET) or strength training (ST) on cardiovascular and neuromuscular performance as well as hormonal responses of conscripts during an 8-week basic training (BT) period when compared to the current standardized (NT) programme. The third aim was to study the effects of these three different training programmes on a novel 3K combat running performance test. The present results showed that aerobic fitness and muscle endurance of 20 year old men in Finland has decreased a…
Proposed Protocol for Field Testing of Endurance Fitness of Young Labrador Retrievers
2023
The number of dogs and, with it, dog sports are growing in popularity, and the training of dogs begins at an early age. Although fitness testing is an imperative part of purposeful training and sports, to our knowledge, no objective field tests are available for measuring young dogs’ endurance fitness. The aim of this study is to describe a simple, easy-to-repeat, and inexpensive way to test training intervention effects on endurance fitness in young Labrador Retrievers. Healthy client-owned 16-week-old Labrador Retrievers will be recruited and divided into test and control groups. The test group will have an eight-week training program followed by a four-week detraining period, while the c…

Stress Assessment of Vestibular Endurance Training for Civil Aviation Flight Students Based on EEG
2021
AbstractObjectiveThe main goal of our study is to clarify the EEG characteristics of the stress response caused by vestibular endurance training under the real conditions.MethodsTen pilot trainees received a series of acute anti-vertigo training stimulations on the rotary ladder while recording electroencephalographic data (64 electrodes). Afterwards, the subject’s anti-vertigo ability was tested for the best performance after 1 month of training, and verifying whether it is relating to the EEG signals we collected before.Results(1) The absolute power ofαwaves in the C3 and C4 regions is same as the difference between 1 min before and 2 min after stimulation, and their activity is enhanced …
Do Antioxidant Vitamins Prevent Exercise-Induced Muscle Damage? A Systematic Review
2020
Free radicals produced during exercise play a role in modulating cell signaling pathways. High doses of antioxidants may hamper adaptations to exercise training. However, their benefits are unclear. This review aims to examine whether vitamin C (VitC) and/or vitamin E (VitE) supplementation (SUP) prevents exercise-induced muscle damage. The PubMed, Web of Science, Medline, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus databases were searched, and 21 articles were included. Four studies examined the effects of acute VitC SUP given pre-exercise: in one study, lower CK levels post-exercise was observed; in three, no difference was recorded. In one study, acute VitE SUP reduced CK activity 1 h post-exercise in condi…
<p>Exercise Training and Fasting: Current Insights</p>
2020
Fasting is defined as the abstinence from consuming food and/or beverages for different periods of time. Both traditional and modern healthcare systems recommend fasting as a therapeutic intervention for the management of several chronic, non-infectious diseases. Exercising during a fasting state increases lipolysis in adipose tissue while also stimulating peripheral fat oxidation, resulting in increased fat utilization and weight loss. A key focus of this review is to assess whether endurance training performed while fasting induces specific training adaptations, where increased fat oxidation improves long-term endurance levels. Fasting decreases body weight, lean body and fat content in b…
