Influence of Menstrual Cycle or Hormonal Contraceptive Phase on Physiological Variables Monitored During Treadmill Testing

2021

Purpose: To examine the influence of menstrual cycle (MC) and hormonal contraceptive (HC) cycle phases on physiological variables monitored during incremental treadmill testing in physically active women (eumenorrheic, EUM = 16 and monophasic HC-users, CHC = 12). Methods: Four running tests to exhaustion were performed at bleeding, mid follicular (mid FOL)/active 1, ovulation/active 2, and mid luteal (mid LUT)/inactive. HC and MC phases were confirmed from serum hormones. Heart rate (HR), blood lactate (Bla), and VO˙ 2 were monitored, while aerobic (AerT) and anaerobic (AnaT) thresholds were determined. VO˙ 2peak, maximal running speed (RUNpeak), and total running time (RUNtotal) were recor…

HSP60 is muscle fiber-type specific and increases after endurance training: Mice model

2014

Heat shock protein (Hsp) 60 plays a key role in the translocation of proteins and cytoprotection, is primarily localized inside mitochondrial, and its levels increase in skeletal muscle upon exercise (Folkesson et al., 2013). The aim of this study was to examine muscle fiber specificity of HSP60 at rest and after an endurance training program of 45 days. Forth-eight male young (7-weeks old) healthy mice (BALB/c) were subdivided into six groups (8 mice per group). Three groups were trained on a rota-rod, at a gradually increasing duration and speed; while the other three groups did not perform any type of regular physical activity. One group of each condition was sacrificed after 15, 30 and …

Immune system adaptations during competition period in female cross-country skiers

2011

Stenholm, Johanna. Immune system adaptations during competition period in female cross-country skiers. Master’s Thesis in Exercise Physiology, Department of Biology of Physical Activity. University of Jyväskylä. 95pp. Purpose. This study was undertaken to characterize the extent of immune and endocrine changes in competition period and related to two competition weekends in well trained athletes in different parts of the competition period. An additional purpose was to evaluate if the changes in immunological variables would have an effect on the incidence of upper-respiratory-tract infections. The effect of the nutrition, nutrient and training status was also studied. Methods. Ten (10) nat…

Body Composition, Energy Availability, Training, and Menstrual Status in Female Runners.

2020

Purpose: To determine body composition, energy availability, training load, and menstrual status in young elite endurance running athletes (ATH) over 1 year, and in a secondary analysis, to investigate how these factors differ between nonrunning controls (CON), and amenorrheic (AME) and eumenorrheic (EUM) ATH. Correlations to injury, illness, and performance were also examined. Methods: Altogether 13 ATH and 8 CON completed the Low Energy Availability in Females Questionnaire. Anthropometric, energy intake, and peak oxygen uptake assessments were made at 4 time points throughout the year: at baseline post competition season, post general preparation, post specific preparation, and post comp…

Periodised Carbohydrate Intake Does Not Affect Substrate Oxidation but May Contribute to Endurance Capacity.

2021

The aim of this study was to investigate whether periodising carbohydrate intake around specific training sessions will enhance endurance training adaptations. Seventeen healthy recreationally endurance-trained males (n = 5) and females (n = 12) (27.5 ± 5.4 years) participated in a four-week training intervention. Participants were divided into two groups: FASTED (stayed fasted between evening high-intensity interval training session and low-intensity training session in the following morning) and FED (no restriction in food intake). Pre- and post-testing included peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), anaerobic capacity, and 60 min submaximal running tests. Fasted venous blood samples were drawn fo…

Acute HIT session induced changes and recovery in muscle activation level, voluntary force production and jump performance during 8 weeks of HIT trai…

2017

High-intensity interval training (HIT) has gained wide popularity among competitive athletes and sport enthusiasts in the recent decades. While an extensive amount of research has been done on acute neuromuscular (NM) response and recovery after low-moderate intensity endurance training, the data regarding HIT in recreational athletes remains to be limited. In order to reduce that gap, the present study investigated the acute HIT session induced changes and recovery in muscle activation level, voluntary force production and counter movement jump performance during 8 weeks of HIT training in recreationally endurance trained men. A total of 9 subjects age 30.7 years (± 5.8), participated in t…

Effects of aerobic and strength training on aerobic capacity, muscle strength, and gene expression of lymphomonocytes in patients with stable CAD

2020

This study examined the effectiveness, suitability, and safety of a mixed interval-type aerobic and strength training program (MIAST) on physical fitness in patients with stable coronary artery disease (CAD) without history of myocardial infarction (MI). Twenty-three patients with stable CAD were randomly assigned to a MIAST (n = 12; mean age 58.6 years) or control (n = 11; 63.3 years) group. The MIAST group participated in the progressive training program twice a week for 21 weeks. Peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), workload, and exercise time were measured as were maximal muscle strength, serum lipids, glucose concentration, and the cross-sectional area (CSA) of knee extensors. The safety and …

Serum hormone concentrations and physical performance during concurrent strength and endurance training in recreational male and female endurance run…

2011

To investigate the effects of concurrent strength and endurance training on physical performance and serum hormone levels a total of 32 recreational endurance runners were trained for 18 weeks. Subjects were divided into four training groups separated by the strength training mode and gender. The groups were women’s and men’s combined maximal and explosive strength training group (WME; n=9 and MME; n=9), and women’s and men’s muscle endurance strength training group (WE; n= 8 & ME; n=8). The training was executed in three consecutive periods (I; 10 weeks, II; 4 weeks and III; 4 weeks). The endurance training in all groups was low-intensity (below lactate threshold) running throughout the wh…

The effects of vibration during maximal graded cycling exercise: A pilot study

2012

Whole Body Vibration training is studied and used in different areas, related to sport performance and rehabilitation. However, few studies have investigated the effects of Vibration (Vib) exposure on aerobic performance through the application of this concept to cycling exercise. A specifically designed vibrating cycloergometer, the powerBIKETM, was used to compare the effects of Vib cycling exercise and normal cycling on different physiological parameters during maximal graded exercise test. Twelve recreationally active male adults (25 ± 4.8 yrs; 181.33 ± 5.47 cm; 80.66 ± 11.91 kg) performed two maximal incremental cycling tests with and without Vib in a blockrandomized order. The protoco…
