Recovery of hormonal, blood lipid, and hematological profiles from a North Pole expedition.

INTRODUCTION This study examined the recovery patterns of hormonal, blood lipid, and hematological profiles following strenuous physical loading, continuous extreme cold exposure and energy deficit induced by a North Pole expedition. METHODS Seven men completed an 850-km North Pole expedition in temperatures varying from -3 degrees C to -47 degrees C. Daily energy intake was approximately 23 MJ x d(-1) and was composed of approximately 60% fat. Blood samples were collected 2 wk before (Pre) the expedition and after 2 wk (Post 1), and 2 mo (Post 2). Additional samples were collected on the first (R1), third (R3), and fifth (R5) return days. Methodological considerations to determine the effect of exercise on brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels.

Objectives: Physical exercise up-regulates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the brain and blood. However, there is yet no consensus about the adequate blood processing conditions to standardize its assessment. We aimed to find a reliable blood sample processing method to determine changes in BDNF due to exercise. Establishing cut-points for physical activity classification using triaxial accelerometer in middle-aged recreational marathoners

The purpose of this study was to establish GENEA (Gravity Estimator of Normal Everyday Activity) cut-points for discriminating between six relative-intensity activity levels in middle-aged recreational marathoners. Extreme duration exercise affects old and younger men differently.

Aim & Methods: Extreme endurance exercise provides a valuable research model for understanding the adaptive metabolic response of older and younger individuals to intense physical activity. Here, we compare a wide range of metabolic and physiologic parameters in two cohorts of seven trained men, age 30 ± 5 years or age 65 ± 6 years, before and after the participants travelled ≈3000 km by bicycle over 15 days. Results: Over the 15-day exercise intervention, participants lost 2–3 kg fat mass with no significant change in body weight. A Comparative Study of Blood Lactate Tests in Swimming*

Three different modes of lactate tests were studied. Eleven male competitive swimmers performed the tests (n.100 m, n.300 m, 2.100m + 2.400 m) within 5 days. Swimming velocity (V) vs blood lactate (BLa) and V vs heart rate (HR) curves were averaged. In V vs BLa comparisons, the BLa values of 4 mmol.l-1 in 2.400 m, 3 mmol.l-1 in n.300 m, and 2 mmol.l-1 in n.100 m modes were found to correspond to the same V. Although the resting BLa values were similar before the testing occasions, the initial BLa value in very easy swimming was lower in the n.300 m than in the n.100 m mode. Mechanical work, mechanical power, energy consumption and mechanical efficiency were studied in constant-speed treadmill running of 5 min at seven different exercises around aerobic (AerT) and anaerobic (AnT) thresholds. Muscle strength and muscle characteristics in monozygous and dizygous twins.

Muscle strength and electrical activity were investigated on 31 pairs of young male and female monozygous (MZ) and dizygous (DZ) twins. The measurements included leg forces, force-time, running velocity, muscular power, maximal integrated electromyographic activity (IEMG) and chronaximetry of the quadriceps muscle group. In each parameter the intrapair variance was computed and the differences were tested between the MZ and DZ twins.
