Grid synchronization of DC energy storage using Voltage Source Inverter with ZCD and PLL techniques
2015
To increase the penetration of renewable energy sources, a proper energy storage is required. In this context, there is a growing concern about the use of energy storage for overcoming the intermittency of renewable energy sources as well as in demand side management. In order to accomplish grid synchronization of energy storage, proper power conditioning devices are required. This paper analyses single phase grid synchronization of DC energy storage using MATLAB Simulink ® environment. The considered power conditioning device is a Voltage Source Inverter (VSI), which is controlled using two methods called (i) traditional Zero Crossing Detection (ZCD) technique and (ii) the phase detector b…
A New Device for the Control and the Connection to the Grid of Combined RES-based Generators and Electric Storage Systems
2013
In this paper a new device for the control and the connection to the supply utility grid of combined RES-based generators and electric storage systems is presented. The device is a bidirectional converter that can be controlled so as to facilitate the interface between the low voltage grid and photovoltaic or wind generators combined with batteries, contemporary addressing the requirements of the reference technical standards for users connection and providing different ancillary services. In the paper the functioning of the device and its circuit diagram are described, the single parts are shown and the potentiality of its control system are commented. © 2013 IEEE.
Electrochemical energy storage mitigating impact of electric vehicle on the electric grid: Two Italian case studies
2017
In the framework of the Italian R&D project i-Next two pilots plants were realized aiming at demonstrate benefits coming from the adoption of electrochemical energy storages (Lithium ion batteries and hydrogen) integrated with renewable energy sources. In the present study the preliminary results coming from the demo sites operations are reported paying attention to the impacts to the grid.
Electromagnetic immunity analysis of a new interface device with power line communication for smart grid and energy storage applications
2013
An analysis of EMC standards related to smart grid devices with PLC port has been carried out and the standardization lacks have been pointed out with reference to the evaluation of electromagnetic immunity to narrowband, coming from other communication systems connected to the grid, and RF disturbances conducted disturbances, usually present in a power grid. In particular, the paper analyses the electromagnetic conducted immunity of a new interface protection device (ID) for smart grid and energy storage applications. The new ID is equipped with a measuring board, a STM32 microcontroller, for data elaboration and memorization, and a ST7580 N-PSK powerline transceiver. An experimental test …
Valorisation de machines frigorifiques a adsorption sur zeolithes
1991
Abstract The regeneration stage using intermittent thermodynamical cycles based on zeolite adsorption (zeolite 13X-H2O) has been studied. This point is of particular interest for understanding of systems of energy storage and cooling. This paper examines the use of microwave energy sources for analysing the regeneration problem. The method proposed allows a considerable decrease in the regeneration time without an increase of the temperature of the material. The energy yields are high and the adsorption-desorption time cycles are short if the microwave field is well tuned. This last is a function of time and of the filling coefficient. The results obtained using microwave irradiation are co…
Investigation of design strategies and quantification of energy flexibility in buildings: A case-study in southern Italy
2021
Abstract The need for nearly (net) zero energy buildings in the current European landscape does not merely refer to energy balances: the aim to investigate the interaction between generation and load and find sources of technical-economic energy efficiency is marking the rise in interest throughout research and practice of energy flexibility solutions in buildings. In this regard, the study aims at enhancing the energy flexibility of a building in southern Italy through Rule-Based Control algorithms for the control of the space heating system and the charge and discharge of an electricity storage. The influence of electricity pricing and the thermal comfort conditions on flexibility is also…
GRID STABILITY IMPROVEMENT BY RES-BASED GENERATORS AND BATTERY ENERGY STORAGE SYSTEMS IN SMALL ISLANDS
2021
The integration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) with power electronics interface to the grid, without the back-up of rotating inertia, endangers frequency stability. This issue becomes particularly critical in isolated power systems, like those of small islands not supplied by the main grid, in the case of high shares of production from unpredictable renewables such as photovoltaic and wind sources. Consequently, to preserve the security and the reliability of these systems, it is necessary to adopt new frequency adjustments mechanisms. In this context, the thesis investigates the transition toward an economically and technically feasible generating system based on RES, to achieve specifi…
Preliminary Tests On A Miniaturized Hybrid Pv-Pemfc System
2007
A regenerative hybrid PV-PEMFC low power system is a suitable solution to replace batteries and to supply small electric devices placed in remote areas with no grid connection. Such a system was designed and built including a PV array, electrolyzer, PEMFC stack (6We) and hydrogen storage tank. As well known a hybrid PV-PEMFC energy system may represent a reliable solution to the renewable energy storage problem. Hydrogen produced by such a system is a clean fuel, suitable to replace traditional fuels which contain carbon damaging the environment. The paper reports results of a preliminary, non-dynamic experimental analysis performed on the system in order to study the effects of the anode p…
An Analysis of the Intertial Response of Small Isolated Power Systems in Presence of Generation from Renewable Energy Sources
2018
Renewable Energy Sources are posing critical issues related to the mining of power systems stability, essentially due to a decrement of the inertial response during system's contingencies. As a consequence, to preserve the security and the reliability of the system, it is necessary to adopt new frequency adjustments mechanisms. This issue becomes particularly critical in isolated power systems, like those of small islands not supplied by the main grid, in the case of high shares of production from unpredictable renewabies such as photovoitaic and wind sources. In this framework, the present work deals with the analysis of the variation of the inertia time constant of a small island in vario…
Density functional theory based screening of ternary alkali-transition metal borohydrides: a computational material design project.
2009
We present a computational screening study of ternary metal borohydrides for reversible hydrogen storage based on density functional theory. We investigate the stability and decomposition of alloys containing 1 alkali metal atom, Li, Na, or K M1; and 1 alkali, alkaline earth or 3d / 4d transition metal atom M2 plus two to five BH4 groups, i.e., M1M2BH42‐5, using a number of model structures with trigonal, tetrahedral, octahedral, and free coordination of the metal borohydride complexes. Of the over 700 investigated structures, about 20 were predicted to form potentially stable alloys with promising decomposition energies. The M1Al/ Mn/ FeBH44, Li/ NaZnBH43, and Na/ KNi/ CoBH43 alloys are …
