Status of EU DEMO heat transport and power conversion systems
2018
Abstract DEMO in Europe is considered to be the nearest-term reactor design to follow ITER and capable of demonstrating production of electricity, operating with a closed fuel-cycle and to be a facilitating machine between ITER and a commercial reactor. The aim of this paper is to show the design progress of the complex system’s “chain” devoted to the extraction of the plasma generated pulsed thermal power and its conversion into electricity delivered to the grid, including the Primary Heat Transport System (PHTS), the Power Conversion System (PCS) and the Intermediate Heat Transport System (IHTS) – provided by an Energy Storage System (ESS) – in between PHTS and PCS, which is introduced fo…
Wireless Power Transfer for Electric Vehicles: System Design Approach and Energy Storage Characterization
2023
This thesis is the result of the research work carried out as part of the PhD course in Energy and Information Technology between November 2019 and January 2023 at the University of Palermo jointly with the University of Lisbon. The research project has been focused on wireless charging systems for electric vehicles. A wide-ranging analysis was conducted on the topic, with a particular focus on the design aspects of these systems. This thesis, a summary of the work carried out over the previous three years, is organized into two parts, identifying the macro research activities into which the project was been divided. The first part is focused on the design approach of the Wireless Power Tra…
Innovative Compact Solar Air Conditioner based on Fixed and Cooled Adsorption Beds and Wet Heat Exchangers
2014
Abstract In this work, a new all-in-one compact solar air conditioner concept is presented. The system is mainly based on a new DEC process which utilises fixed and cooled adsorption beds operating in a batch process and two wet heat exchangers. The proposed innovative adsorption bed is a fin and tube heat exchanger commonly used in the air conditioning sector, wherein the spaces between the fins are filled with silica gel grains. The main feature of this component is to allow simultaneous dehumidification and cooling of air. Furthermore, since the component hosts a considerable amount of adsorption material, solar energy can be efficiently stored in the desiccant media in terms of accumula…
A Permanent Magnet Linear Generator for the Enhancement of the Reliability of a Wave Energy Conversion System
2019
In this paper, a linear generator for a highly reliable Wave Energy Conversion system is designed and tested. In order to store energy, the system is able to produce hydrogen The Wave Energy Conversion System consists of an electrical linear generator, a power conversion system and a sea-water electrolyzer. A small scale prototype of the system has been designed and built. The design is oriented to the enhancement of the system robustness and reliability and a Failure Mode and Effects and Criticality Analysis (FMECA) has been used. In order to guarantee an easy extension of the power capability of the marine plant, a modular architecture of the system has been adopted. The design strategy i…
Self-sufficient PV-H2 Alternative Energy Objects
2016
Energy storage becomes more important as mankind switch to renewable energy, away from fossil resources. Traditional way – batteries - offer a limited number of cycles, require regular maintenance; nevertheless gravitational storage, flywheels, compressed air are mainly large scale and expensive methods. The hydrogen as energy carrier and hydrogen fuel cells are possible option to store different amounts of energy for relatively long times with low losses. Different solutions for self-sufficient sun/wind energy objects are analysed - the solar radiation collecting systems, wind power generators, and high pressure electrolysis technologies for hydrogen production and the metal-hydride energy…
Technological and legislative status point of stationary energy storages in the EU
2019
Abstract European renewable generation has been supported through several policy instruments in the last decades, and this has caused a significant growth of the renewable energy sector, spurred by the ambitious climate and energy policy targets. Despite this impetuous growth, the electricity infrastructure is not yet ready to accept increasing shares of variable renewable energy sources (RES) generation, and this is causing grid balance challenges, due to the inherently variable nature of the PV and wind energy. In order to overcome this issue, allowing higher shares of renewable generation in the energy sector, energy storage (ES) systems are becoming increasingly competitive in the globa…
Hybrid Energy System for Rural Electrification in Sri Lanka: Design Study
2015
Off-grid hybrid renewable energy based power system for rural electrification has become an attractive solution for areas where grid electricity is not feasible. Depending on the availability of the resources, single energy source or a combination of several sources, including an energy storage system is used in an off-grid hybrid energy system. As there can be several candidates, the optimum sizing of the components against resource potential, cost and reliability is a vital issue. This chapter presents a study of optimum sizing of a renewable sources based off-grid hybrid energy system that is designed for electrifying a rural community in the Siyambalanduwa area in Sri Lanka. The communi…
A regenerative braking system for internal combustion engine vehicles using supercapacitors as energy storage elements - Part 2: Simulation results
2020
Abstract In this two-part work, an electric kinetic energy recovery system (e-KERS) for internal combustion engine vehicle (ICEV) is presented and its performance evaluated through numerical simulations. The KERS proposed is based on the use of a supercapacitor as energy storage, interfaced to a brushless machine through a properly designed power converter. In Part 1, the system is described and analysed, and the mathematical model used for the simulations is presented. For each component of the KERS, the real efficiency and the power or energy limitations are adequately considered. In Part 2, the energetic and economic advantages attainable by the proposed KERS are evaluated using MATLAB S…

An Algorithm for Optimal Sizing of BESS in Smart Islands Energy Communities: the Case of Pantelleria
2021
Energy Communities (EC) are a promising solution to reduce both the carbon footprint and the impact of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) on the distribution grid. Based on a simple energy sharing principle, EC can be decisive in the next future energy transition of some problematic territories, like small islands not supplied by the main power grid. By integrating Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), it is possible to improve the EC performance. However, due to the still high BESSs unit prices, the goal of this work is to find the optimal size of BESSs, under various conditions, which combines the need to maximize shared energy and the possible revenue of EC actors. To set this multi-objecti…
