Carbon Footprint Analysis: Towards a Projects Evaluation Model for Promoting Sustainable Development

Abstract Climate change and global warming are internationally recognized as current issues, driving negative effects on humanity, and being mainly caused by GHG emissions generated both from industrial activities, and from other anthropogenic activities. Restoring the ecological balance requires urgent action to reduce GHG emissions. In this respect, the European Union has set the target to reduce the GHG emissions by 20% until 2020, compared to 1990 level. This paper presents a methodology to develop a model for carbon footprint calculation, for assessing and reducing GHG emissions generated by European funds financed projects.

Abstract Within the Romanian agriculture subsistence / semi-subsistence agricultural exploitations continue to occupy an important part, the characteristics of their organization and functioning imparting a particular kind of dynamics. The study here aims at highlighting the perspectives on the evolution of subsistence / semi-subsistence agriculture in relation to rural economy and the sustainable rural development. Our main purpose is to bring into analysis the core issues which the Romanian small farms have to face and, at the same time, identify / propose solutions which would contribute to the economic recovery of the agricultural exploitations in question.

Europe's offshore winds assessed with synthetic aperture radar, ASCAT and WRF

Europe's offshore wind resource mapping is part of the New European Wind Atlas (NEWA) international consortium effort. This study presents the results of analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ocean wind maps based on Envisat and Sentinel-1 with a brief description of the wind retrieval process and Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT) ocean wind maps. The wind statistics at 10 and 100 m above mean sea level (a.m.s.l.) height using an extrapolation procedure involving simulated long-term stability over oceans are presented for both SAR and ASCAT. The paper presents an analysis methodology for a single-line-to-ground fault, occurring at a secondary MV/LV substation in a power network formed by a HV/MV station, feeding, through a MV tri-phase cable line, N MV/LV substations whose earth electrodes are interconnected by bare buried conductors. In the preliminary explanation of the methodology, earth buried conductors are studied in their double function of earth electrodes and connection elements between earthing grids, both in absence and in presence of other interfering conductors.
