Towards a microbial thermoelectric cell.

Microbial growth is an exothermic process. Biotechnological industries produce large amounts of heat, usually considered an undesirable by-product. In this work, we report the construction and characterization of the first microbial thermoelectric cell (MTC), in which the metabolic heat produced by a thermally insulated microbial culture is partially converted into electricity through a thermoelectric device optimized for low ΔT values. A temperature of 41°C and net electric voltage of around 250–600 mV was achieved with 1.7 L baker’s yeast culture. Neutrino pair annihilation near accreting, stellar-mass black holes

We investigate the energy-momentum deposition due to neutrino-antineutrino annihilation in the vicinity of axisymmetric, accreting black holes (BHs) by numerically ray-tracing neutrino trajectories in a Kerr space-time. Hyperaccreting stellar-mass BHs are widely considered as energy sources that can drive ultrarelativistic outflows with the potential to produce gamma-ray bursts. The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of Cultural Heritage is of great relevance. To that end, technological tools and interactive solutions (e.g., 3D models) have become increasingly popular. Historical silk fabrics are nearly flat objects, very fragile and with complex internal geometries, related to different weaving techniques and types of yarns. While the operational energy use of buildings is often regulated in current energy saving policies, their embodied greenhouse gas emissions still have a considerable mitigation potential. The study aims at developing a multi-objective optimization method for design and renovation of buildings incorporating the operational and embodied energy demands, global warming potential, and costs as objective functions. The paper illustrates an adaptive approach based on different topologies of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for the power energy output forecasting of photovoltaic (PV) modules. The analysis of the PV module’s power output needed detailed local climate data, which was collected by a dedicated weather monitoring system. Vibrio agarivorans sp. nov., a novel agarolytic marine bacterium.

It is proposed that the new Vibrio species Vibrio agarivorans accommodates two agarolytic, halophilic, fermentative bacterial strains isolated from Mediterranean sea water. The cells were gram-negative, oxidase-positive, polarly flagellated bacilli that fermented glucose without gas production and that produced no decarboxylases. They used a wide range of compounds as sole carbon and energy sources. The DNA G+C content was 44.8 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on complete 16S and 23S rDNA sequences revealed that the strains belong to the gamma-Proteobacteria, and are specifically related to Vibrio species.
