Technological and legislative status point of stationary energy storages in the EU
2019
Abstract European renewable generation has been supported through several policy instruments in the last decades, and this has caused a significant growth of the renewable energy sector, spurred by the ambitious climate and energy policy targets. Despite this impetuous growth, the electricity infrastructure is not yet ready to accept increasing shares of variable renewable energy sources (RES) generation, and this is causing grid balance challenges, due to the inherently variable nature of the PV and wind energy. In order to overcome this issue, allowing higher shares of renewable generation in the energy sector, energy storage (ES) systems are becoming increasingly competitive in the globa…
Alternative Ways of Energy Supply in Rural Areas
2019
Optimization of thermal energy and electricity production processes using renewable energy source (RES) is extremely important for agricultural horticultural, and production farms. The article is devoted to the search for the best available techniques to the optimize the process of obtaining heat energy from RES to meet the energy needs in Polish agriculture. The food industry is particularly energy-intensive and as a result, when introducing various innovative technological processes, strong emphasis is placed on rational energy consumption and minimizing its losses, as well as on the secondary use of waste heat. The direct result of using RES devices is also a reduction in greenhouse gas …
Network Dynamics of an Energy Supply Chain: Applicability of the Network Approach to Analysing the Industrial Ecology Practices of Companies
2006
Currently firms face environmental challenges, which require more emphasis on inter-organisational environmental improvement efforts. A field of study of industrial ecology offers some novel approaches for inter-organisational environmental management. It emphasises symbiotic linkages between firms or other organisations in which waste of one actor is used as raw material by others. The industrial network approach has been suggested as a possible framework for developing managerial implications for industrial ecology. This study analyses an example of an industrial ecosystem with notions of the network theory, and concludes that the industrial network approach is useful in analysing and des…
Initial approaches in benchmarking and round robin testing for proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers
2019
Abstract As ever-increasing amounts of renewable electricity enter the energy supply mix on a regional, national and international basis, greater emphasis is being placed on energy conversion and storage technologies to deal with the oscillations, excess and lack of electricity. Hydrogen generation via proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) is one technology that offers a pathway to store large amounts of electricity in the form of hydrogen. The challenges to widespread adoption of PEM water electrolyzers lie in their high capital and operating costs which both need to be reduced through R&D. An evaluation of reported PEMWE performance data in the literature reveals that there …
Smart Micro-Grid Performance using Renewable Energy
2020
The aim of this research is to determine the performance of PV panels, wind turbines, battery storage and power imported from the grid to the system which will ensure a reliable energy supply, as well as the technical feasibility of a smart microgrid system. Indonesia’s renewable energy potential for electricity reaches 443 GW, where solar energy is the largest potential, namely 4.8 KWh m–2 or equivalent to 112 000 GWp, but only 10 MWp has been utilized. The most basic problem in this system, namely, the uncertainty of wind energy and solar energy, one of the most vital factors in the optimal size of a renewable energy-based smart microgrid system is the reliability of the system being buil…
The possibilities of energy storage in bulk materials
2018
The increased demand for energy from renewable sources entails the development of storage systems. The purpose of these systems is to supply energy on demand during periods which may not be concurrent with the time of the most efficient production of this energy. Various systems are being developed for storing energy in various forms and over various lengths of time. This paper presents selected projects and the results of studies into thermal energy storage. The results of the present author's own research into the transport of thermal energy in granular beds are also presented. The curves of temperature distribution have been determined; they are essential for the design of the thermal sto…
Husk Energy Supply Systems for Sunflower Oil Mills
2020
Together with solar, wind, and hydro renewable energy sources (RES), biomass constitutes an integral part of the high-renewables electricity systems. Considerable feedstocks for electricity generation are process-based residues. Ukraine is the world leader in sunflower seed production, therefore, husk (a by-product of oil production) is a promising biofuel for combustion- based power plants. The plants consume primarily electricity and fossil fuels (natural gas or fuel oil) for steam production. Their usage affects the edible oil production cost and impacts on climate change. The above facts force us to look for alternatives. By-product (husk) utilization can reduce exhaustible energy consu…
Šlâhi utilizaciï ta povtornogo vikoristannâ nadliškovoï teplovoï energiï v agrarnomu virobnictvì
2014
The article describes the methods of reusing excess thermal energy of technological processes in agricultural production in order to save energy of enterprises and limit heat emissions into the atmosphere. It is shown that the combined production of heat and cold is one of the most cost-effective systems using heat pumps nowadays.
