’Someone stole my story’ : Home and Trauma in Two Palestinian Novels
2018
Master's thesis English EN500 This thesis will examine representations of home and trauma in the Palestinian novels Mornings in Jenin (2008) by Susan Abulhawa and Salt Houses (2017) by Hala Alyan. Written by Palestinian refugees now living in the United States, each of the two novels follows a Palestinian family through four generations, and depicts the struggle of creating a sense of belonging away from home. This thesis will focus on the individual experience of home, and examine the ways in which traumatic memories hinder the various characters’ ability to create belonging in exile. Storytelling and the construction of narrative also serve an important function in the novels, and I will …

Genres in young learner L2 English writing: A genre typology for the TRAWL (Tracking Written Learner Language) corpus
2023
In learner corpus research, it is well known that one should control for genre when collecting and analysing written L2 (second language) English data, as genre is one factor that has been shown to account for language variation. This article presents a genre typology for annotating learner texts from the lower secondary level in Norway (ages 13-15, school years 8-10). The data are drawn from TRAWL (Tracking Written Learner Language), a new learner corpus currently under compilation. As the TRAWL corpus will be openly available for research, it is important that the typology is clearly described, which is the primary aim of the present study.

Word Neighbor Priming in Bilingual Sentence Reading: Evidence from Eye Movements
2018
Master's thesis English EN501 - University of Agder 2018 This study investigates English sentence reading processes in Norwegian-English bilinguals. It aims to explore the effects of word form overlap and its connection to second-language (L2) English proficiency. We recorded eye movements of Norwegian-English bilinguals while they read single sentences on screen. The experiment was a replication of Frisson, Koole, Hughes, Olson and Wheeldon, (2014), who investigated the effects of form similarity between words (orthographic and phonological, both separate and combined) on sentence reading in English monolinguals. They also investigated the effects of distance between prime and target words…
