A computational approach to evaluate temperature and heat partition in machining with multilayer coated tools

2003

Abstract In this paper, analytical models for estimating the interface temperature and heat partition to the chip in continuous dry machining of steels with flat-faced tools treated with multilayer coatings are presented. The database for modeling includes changes in the thermal properties of both workpiece and substrate/coating materials and the Peclet and Fourier numbers occurring at actual interface temperatures. Process outputs involve the average tool–chip interface temperature, the tool–chip contact length, the friction energy and the heat balance between the moving chip and stationary tool. It was found that the heat partition coefficient varies significantly from 0.65 to 0.8 when us…

Determination of Nonuniform Residual Stresses Using the Ring-Core Method

1996

This paper considers residual stress analysis using the ring-core method. In particular, the so-called integral equation method is applied to evaluate nonuniform residual stress fields. The proposed method overcomes typical drawbacks of the incremental strain method which lead to incorrect results for strongly varying stress fields. The experimental results obtained with a specimen subjected to a bending load confirm the theoretical predictions.

Automatic Recognition and Analysis of Scanned Non-crimp Fabrics for Calculation of their Fluid Flow Permeability

2007

Automatic recognition of scanned images of distorted bi-axial fiber bundle arrangements is considered in order to obtain the overall permeability of the formed fiber network. Scanned images are pre-processed with color normalization followed by usage of a threshold to find the pixels belonging to the bundles, the threads keeping the bundles together, and the distinct gaps formed between the bundles. Since the scanned images virtually have a perfect grayscale, the intensity can be treated as a corresponding signal of the image. Next the regular character of the fiber network is investigated using Fourier analysis on the fiber bundles as well as on the threads. The direction, position, and s…

KNOWN RESIDUAL STRESS SPECIMENS USING OPPOSED INDENTATION

2009

In order to test new theories for residual stress measurement or to test the effects of residual stress on fatigue, fracture, and stress corrosion cracking, a known stress test specimen was designed and then fabricated, modeled, and experimentally validated. To provide a unique biaxial stress state, a 60 mm diameter 10 mm thick disk of 316L stainless steel was plastically compressed through the thickness with an opposing 15 mm diameter hard steel indenters in the center of the disk. For validation, the stresses in the specimen were first mapped using time-of-flight neutron diffraction and Rietveld full pattern analysis. Next, the hoop stresses were mapped on a cross section of two disks usi…

Analyses of innovative glass blocks for BIPV: assessment of thermal and optical performance

2015

This paper illustrates the results of the performance analyses conducted on an innovative glass block integrated with thirdgeneration dye-sensitised solar cells (DSCs), designed to enable the construction of translucent and sustainable building envelopes. The analyses include the simulation of both thermal and optical performance with regard to different configurations of the photovoltaic (PV)-integrated glass block, and the results obtained are presented using two different programs: Comsol Multiphysics and WINDOW. The configurations may differ – for example, because of the position of the module inside the glass block, the type of DSC module used (composition, transparency, design) and th…

VALIDITY, RELIABILITY AND FEASIBILITY OF MEASURING MUSCLE ACTIVITY WITH TEXTILE ELECTRODES EMBEDDED INTO CLOTHING

2007

INTRODUCTION In out-of-laboratory settings the surface EMG measurements are complicated by the requirement of careful electrode placement and skin preparation. The development of washable textile electrodes that can be sowed into sportswear enable muscle activity recordings during normal locomotion without skin preparation and the problem of wires hanging around the body [1]. In this study we performed validity, reliability and feasibility tests of the textile electrodes embedded into shorts against the traditional bipolar surface electrodes.

Prediction of friction and heat flow in machining incorporating thermophysical properties of the coating–chip interface

2004

Abstract This paper deals with an experimental and analytical investigation into the thermodynamically activated effects influencing the behaviour of the multi-layered coated tool rake face during orthogonal cutting of ferromagnetic and paramagnetic steels. Temperature measurements on the tool rake face using a thermocouple-based technique and identification of the contact zone by means of computer image processing were carried out. New methodology for assessing friction and the amount of thermal energy generated when machining with a coated tool insert with natural and restricted contact coupled with a metallic chip, using thermophysical properties of the sliding materials is developed in …

GPCALMA, a mammographic CAD in a GRID connection

2003

Purpose of this work is the development of an automatic system which could be useful for radiologists in the investigation of breast cancer. A breast neoplasia is often marked by the presence of microcalcifications and massive lesions in the mammogram: hence the need for tools able to recognize such lesions at an early stage. GPCALMA (Grid Platform Computer Assisted Library for MAmmography), a collaboration among italian physicists and radiologists, has built a large distributed database of digitized mammographic images (at this moment about 5500 images corresponding to 1650 patients). This collaboration has developed a CAD (Computer Aided Detection) system which, installed in an integrated…

Phase Plane Analysis of Web Drying

2004

The mathematical model which describes the web drying in the papermaking machine has been carried out in the collaboration between our institute and joint-stock company “Paper Mill ‘Ligatne’” engineers. The general principles of this develpopment were underlined in the report [zz00]. Under some simplifying assumptions this model can be reduced to the nonlinear moisture — temperature phase plane equation. This equation promotes to obtain significant physical parameters used in the mathematical model, clarifies the causes which allow to optimize the papermaking machine drying cylinders temperature regime. The phase plane equation also explains the parabolic temperature distribution in a serie…

Behaviour modelling notation for information system design

2009

Problems related to behaviour modelling within the platform independent model (PIM) during the model driven design are discussed in the paper. The emphasis is on design problems for information systems, especially on building a behaviour draft. At first issues in the traditional approach using sequence diagrams are discussed. Then a new approach based on activity diagrams is proposed. An extension of activity diagram notation specifically oriented towards comprehensive and readable behaviour design description is presented.
