Finite element analysis of laser shock peening of 2050-T8 aluminum alloy

2015

Laser shock processing is a recently developed surface treatment designed to improve the mechanical properties and fatigue performance of materials, by inducing a deep compressive residual stress field. The purpose of this work is to investigate the residual stress distribution induced by laser shock processing in a 2050-T8 aeronautical aluminium alloy with both X-ray diffraction measurements and 3D finite element simulation. The method of X-ray diffraction is extensively used to characterize the crystallographic texture and the residual stress crystalline materials at different scales (macroscopic, mesoscopic and microscopic).Shock loading and materials’ dynamic response are experimentally…

Microfluidic Synthesis of Highly Shape-Anisotropic Particles from Liquid Crystalline Elastomers with Defined Director Field Configurations

2011

In this article, we present the synthesis of highly shape-anisotropic, micrometer-sized particles from liquid crystalline elastomers, which have the ability to reversibly change their shape in response to a certain external stimulus. For their preparation, we utilized a microfluidic setup. We succeeded in preparing sets of particles with differing degrees of shape anisotropy in their ground state including highly anisotropic fiber-like objects. All samples produced movement during the phase transition from the nematic to the isotropic phase of the liquid crystal. Depending on the direction of this shape change, we classified the samples in two groups. One type showed a contraction, while th…

Excitation of a one-dimensional evanescent wave by conical edge diffraction of surface plasmon

2011

International audience; The experimental observation of a one-dimensional evanescent wave supported by a 90◦ metal edge is reported. Through a measurement of in-plane momenta, we clearly demonstrate the dimensional character of this surface wave and show that it is non-radiative in the superstrate. Excitation conditions, lateral extension and polarization properties of this wave are discussed. Finally, we explore the effect of the surrounding dielectric medium and demonstrate that a single edge can sustain distinct excitations.

Determinant role of the edges in defining surface plasmon propagation in stripe waveguides and tapered concentrators

2012

International audience; In this paper, we experimentally show the effect of waveguide discontinuity on the propagation of the surface plasmon in metal stripes and tapered terminations. Dual-plane leakage microscopy and near-field microscopy were performed on Au stripes with varied widths to imag29e the surface plasmon intensity distribution in real and reciprocal spaces. We unambiguously demonstrate that edge diffraction is the limiting process determining the cutoff conditions of the surface plasmon mode. Finally, we determine the optimal tapered geometry leading to the highest transmission.

Transfer matrix method applied to the parallel assembly of sound absorbing materials

2013

International audience; The transfer matrix method (TMM) is used conventionally to predict the acoustic properties of laterally infinite homogeneous layers assembled in series to form a multilayer. In this work, a parallel assembly process of transfer matrices is used to model heterogeneous materials such as patchworks, acoustic mosaics, or a collection of acoustic elements in parallel. In this method, it is assumed that each parallel element can be modeled by a 2 × 2 transfer matrix, and no diffusion exists between elements. The resulting transfer matrix of the parallel assembly is also a 2 × 2 matrix that can be assembled in series with the classical TMM. The method is validated by compar…

In Vitro Measurement of Strain Localization Preceding Dissection of the Aortic Wall Subjected to Radial Tension

2020

AbstractBackgroundAortic dissection (AD) is a common pathology and challenging clinical problem. A better understanding of the biomechanical effects preceding its initiation is essential for predicting adverse events on a patient-specific basis. Moreover, the predictability of patient-specific biomechanics-based computational models is hampered by uncertainty about boundary conditions and material properties.ObjectivePredisposition of thoracic aortic aneurysms (TAA) to ADs can be related to the degradation of biomechanically important constituents in the aortic wall of TAAs. The goal of the present study is to develop a new methodology to measure strain fields in aortic tissues subjected to…

Quantum computing thanks to Bianchi groups

2018

It has been shown that the concept of a magic state (in universal quantum computing: uqc) and that of a minimal informationally complete positive operator valued measure: MIC-POVMs (in quantum measurements) are in good agreement when such a magic state is selected in the set of non-stabilizer eigenstates of permutation gates with the Pauli group acting on it [1]. Further work observed that most found low-dimensional MICs may be built from subgroups of the modular group PS L(2, Z) [2] and that this can be understood from the picture of the trefoil knot and related 3-manifolds [3]. Here one concentrates on Bianchi groups PS L(2, O10) (with O10 the integer ring over the imaginary quadratic fie…

Discrete wavelet transform based multispectral filter array demosaicking

2013

International audience; The idea of colour filter array may be adapted to multi-spectral image acquisition by integrating more filter types into the array, and developing associated demosaicking algorithms. Several methods employing discrete wavelet transform (DWT) have been proposed for CFA demosaicking. In this work, we put forward an extended use of DWT for mul-tispectral filter array demosaicking. The extension seemed straightforward, however we observed striking results. This work contributes to better understanding of the issue by demonstrating that spectral correlation and spatial resolution of the images exerts a crucial influence on the performance of DWT based demosaicking.

EMG artifacts removal during electrical stimulation, a CWT based technique

2014

International audience; A technique of artifacts removal based on the continuous wavelet transform is presented. It uses common mother wavelets to find the temporal localization of stimulation artifacts on electromyogram (EMG) signal during an electrically evoked contraction of a muscle. This method can be used with standard stimulation pulse waveforms like monophasics or biphasics ones. It uses a histogram representation to find the best threshold to apply on the CWT domain. The algotithm is presented with Haar wavelet and then it is used with common wavelet famillies such as Daubechies or Symlets.
