Monikielisyys vai ”English only”? : yliopistojen henkilökunnan asenteet eri kielten käyttöä kohtaan akateemisessa ympäristössä
2017
The strategic internationalisation of academia has had an important impact on the development of English as the lingua franca in all areas (research, teaching, services and administration) and disciplines of universities worldwide. In this paper, the attitudes of university staff in Finland toward the use of Languages Other Than English (LOTE) were analysed. The data for this study stems from one question in a survey conducted in 2009: “As far as foreign languages are concerned, English is often seen as su#cient in Finnish university contexts. Can you think of any reason why other languages should be used?” 1,991 open ended answers to this question were analysed by means of qualitative indu…

The present paper reports on a qualitative study investigating how Iranian learners of English as a foreign language understand culture and the extent to which this understanding meets the needs of efficient intercultural communication. In order to gather data, in-depth semistructured interviews were conducted with eight participants. The interviews were designed and thematically analyzed using Baker’s (2011) model of intercultural awareness. The model, which served as the analytical framework of the study, has been used to account for the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to communicate through English as a lingua franca. Based on the findings of the study, the main elements of the m…

Kirjallisuuden hyödyntäminen kieltenopetuksessa Suomessa on ollut suhteellisen vähäistä. Kirjallisuuden käyttö kielten opetuksessa tarjoaa kuitenkin enemmän hyötyjä kuin haasteita. Kielen oppimisen lisäksi kirjallisuuden käytöllä voidaan edistää laajempia opetussuunnitelman mukaisia tavoitteita esimerkiksi ihmisenä kasvua. Uusi opetussuunnitelma velvoittaa kehittämään oppilaiden monilukutaitoa eri oppiaineissa, joten se mahdollistaa myös kirjallisuuden käytön kieltenopetuksessa. Yhtenä syynä kirjallisuuden vähäiselle hyödyntämiselle on varmaan ollut oppimisen ja opettamisen haasteet, joita heterogeeniset oppilasryhmät tarjoavat. Uusi opetussuunnitelma velvoittaa ottamaan huomioon erilaiset …

2018
This article focuses on the English translation and reception of a major contemporary Hungarian novel, Ádám Bodor’s The Sinistra Zone. A fairly slim book, The Sinistra Zone was first published in 1992, established Bodor as a major writer and inspired a considerable amount of critical literature in Hungary.
