The making of rallienglanti : cross-linguistic influence in Finnish speakers' pronunciation of English
2016

Using music in EFL teaching at lower secondary education : teachers' experiences and opinions
2010
HUMANISTINEN TIEDEKUNTA KIELTEN LAITOS Hanna Pasanen USING MUSIC IN EFL TEACHING AT LOWER SECONDARY EDUCATION: TEACHERS’ EXPERIENCES AND OPINIONS Pro Gradu -tutkielma Englannin kieli Huhtikuu 2010 80 sivua + 3 liitettä Musiikki on tärkeä osa murrosikäisen nuoren elämää.
English as a lingua franca – a native-culture-free code? Language of communication vs. language of identification
2011
English has become the dominant means of international communication. Its non-native speakers now far outnumber the conventional native speakers in the UK, the USA, Canada etc. Against this background, a number of authors have recently stressed the functions for which foreign languages are learned. They make a distinction between a ‘language of communication’ and a ‘language of identification’. The terms, which were coined by the German applied linguist Werner Hüllen (1992), have recently been popularised in the context of English as a lingua franca. English, it is said, can be used as a language of communication without necessarily being a language of identification. As it is used for prac…
The English Pronunciation Teaching in Europe Survey : Factors Inside and Outside the Classroom
2015
In the past two decades, a number of studies have looked at how English pronunciation is taught, focusing on teaching practices, materials, training and attitudes to native speaker models from both the teachers’ and the learners’ perspective. Most of these studies have been conducted in English-speaking countries such as the USA (Murphy, 1997), Great Britain (Bradford and Kenworthy, 1991; Burgess and Spencer, 2000), Canada (Breitkreutz, Derwing and Rossiter, 2001; Foote, Holtby and Derwing, 2011), Ireland (Murphy, 2011) and Australia (Couper, 2011; Macdonald, 2002). In Europe, pronunciation teaching has been studied in Spain (Walker, 1999) and, more recently, in Finland (Tergujeff, 2012, 20…

Cognition of Korean-English secondary school teachers about intercultural dimension in EFL teaching
2016
The importance of intercultural competence in education has been recognized in order to promote students’ tolerance and empathy towards others in the globalized world. Being the first and foremost foreign language subject in Korea, English classroom is considered to be the right place to address different cultures and the intercultural competence. Then, how English teachers understand intercultural competence would be important since it would greatly affect their teaching. The aim of this study is to investigate how Korean-English secondary school teachers understand intercultural dimension in EFL teaching in relation to their teaching context; and how their reported practices look like. 37…
Assessing the effectiveness of a game‐based phonics intervention for first and second grade English language learners in India: A randomized controll…
2021
Background In 2018, it was found that only a quarter of Grade 3 children in India were reading at grade level. A growing demand for English education has further limited children's literacy achievement. Despite a strong evidence base in favour of using systematic phonics for building English literacy skills, many teachers in India continue to use rote-methods of literacy instruction. Objectives We aimed to examine the efficacy of GraphoLearn (GL) English Rime, a computer-assisted reading intervention, in improving the foundational literacy skills of 1st and 2nd grade students who were attending an English medium school in India. Methods A total of 136 students across 6 classrooms were rando…
GraphoLearn India : The Effectiveness of a Computer-Assisted Reading Intervention in Supporting Struggling Readers of English
2018
India, a country with a population of more than 1.3 billion individuals, houses the world’s second largest educational system. Despite this, 100 of millions of individuals in India are still illiterate. As English medium education sweeps the country, many are forced to learn in a language which is foreign to them. Those living in poverty further struggle to learn English as it tends to be a language which they have no prior exposure to and no support at home for. Low-quality schools and poor instructional methods further exacerbate the problem. Without access to quality education, these individuals continue to struggle and are ultimately never given the chance to break the cycle of poverty.…
