The development of the Englishbe+ V-ende/V-ingperiphrasis: from emphatic to progressive marker?

2014

Author's version of an article in the journal: English Language and Linguistics. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S1360674314000148 The article discusses the grammaticalization of the be + V-ende/V-ing periphrasis as a progressive marker. On the basis of quantitative data, it is claimed that the periphrasis started out as an emphatic alternative to the simple tenses. Its length, unusualness and optionality made it well suited as an emphatic marker. In the Early Modern English period (c. 1500–1700), the periphrasis was reinterpreted as an emphatic progressive marker. The prototypical – so-called focalized – use of the construction gradually became obligatory (f…

L'auxiliation en Italien

1997

This article is based on the results of a study dealing with the various classes of Italian verbs (modals, aspectuels, verbs of movement, progressives, avere da + infinitive) that attract the clitic pronouns from their base position. Their "climbing" is accounted for by excluding any sentence boundary in the domain of the clitic movement. Since this is exactly the traditional structure of the verb-auxiliary relationship, the following hypothesis is made: the verb phrases of a single sentence comprise, in addition to the main verb, an indefinite number of complementary verbs (the ones listed above plus the temporal/aspectual and passive auxiliaries). As a result, their distribution becomes u…

2012

Las exigencias actuales de la sociedad global de la comunicación han llevado a un gran número de exámenes oficiales de idiomas a adoptar el formato informatizado e incluso online, como ocurre con Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE).

Matter, Literacy, and English Language Teaching in an Underprivileged School in Spain

2020

This article analyzes the processes and findings of a collaborative action research (CAR) project that aimed to analyze the potential of materiality to radically transform the way English was taught and learned in an underprivileged public school in Spain. The CAR drew on new materialisms and new literacy studies to explore the relationship between matter and English language teaching from socioeconomic, sociocultural, and technological perspectives. The main pedagogical strategy consisted of widening the quantity and quality of the material resources in the English classroom, precisely to draw a material link between the English classroom and the students' homes, communities, and the infor…

E-learning and language and style in Mainz and Münster

2006

This article reports on how online Language and Style was implemented and taught simultaneously and cooperatively at two German universities in the summer semester of 2004, in the English departments of the universities of Mainz (Patricia Plummer) and Münster (Beatrix Busse). In order to compare different learning and teaching styles, one-third of the course was taught in a traditional seminar-style mode while two-thirds consisted of online workshops. The authors cooperated extensively during the project, assessing and evaluating students’ responses and performances both quantitatively and qualitatively. This article focuses on (1) the place of e-learning and stylistics in our departments …

Ambivalent English : What We Talk About When We Think We Talk About Language

2020

The ambivalence of English manifests itself in the discourses that surround it. English may be a resource and consume resources; it empowers and oppresses. The dichotomous discussion around the usefulness or dangers of English as a “global” or “world” language erases problematizations of the layered societal implications of English in localised contexts. English needs to be analysed not (only) as a language but (also) as the ideologies and societal structures intertwined with it. We examine English in two higher education contexts. Our first case deals with the so-called Accent Reduction courses offered for international students in US universities. The second one analyses English as a lang…

The "intimate enemies": Edward Dowden, W. B. Yeats and the formation of character

2014

Published version of an article in the journal: Nordic Journal of English Studies. Also available from the publisher at: http://ojs.ub.gu.se/ojs/index.php/njes/article/view/2917 Open Access Stung by Edward Dowden's reluctance to endorse the Irish Literary Revival, W. B. Yeats distanced himself publicly from the TCD Professor. This act of distancing has largely been accepted by subsequent scholarship as a reflection of Dowden's lack of influence on Yeats. Despite obvious disagreements on some key points, this essay will argue that Yeats is close to Dowden on a number of issues, by tracing their intimate dialogue about the writings of George Eliot, Shakespeare and Goethe. The concept of forma…

Immigration metaphors in a corpus of legal English: an exploratory study of EAL learners' metaphorical production and awareness

2017
