The Uprooting in the Narrative Language of Foreign Land by Jonathan Raban
2022
The language and narrative style of Jonathan Raban, a contemporary English writer author of the novel Foreign Land (1985), seem to find in the themes of uprooting and self-searching a metaphorical and existential interpretation that in the search for identity alternates the desire to return to the origins, recovering lost affections and beloved places, with the attraction to the unknown. In this oscillation, masterfully rendered by the metaphorical and figurative language of the novel, Raban tells the awareness that the return to the origins is not always a point of arrival but a further turning point in life. The article focuses on some particularly effective linguistic and semantic aspect…
Contribution and limitation of infrared spectroscopy technique to understand physisorption processes on MFI zeolites
2011
This manuscript is devoted to the study of adsorption processes by FTIR spectroscopy. The experimental results concern the adsorption of ethylene, trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, sulfur hexafluoride or p-xylene on MFI zeolites, more especially on silicalite-1. The first step of the work was to develop a new experimental device and procedure in order to obtain reliable absorption infrared data and to improve results previously obtained by a prototype. The first main result is to characterize, maybe for the first time, the evolution of the spectrum of the adsorbent all during the adsorption process. Experiments reveal that the zeolite infrared spectrum undergoes strong modifications w…

Abstract nouns as metadiscursive shells in academic discourse
2018
Vagueness expressions in Italian, Spanish and English task-oriented dialogues
2017
In this article, we present a corpus-based analysis on the use of Vagueness Expressions (VEs) in Italian, Spanish and English in Task-oriented Dialogues. Following the distinction among informational, relational and discourse vagueness (Voghera 2012), we compare the width of the functional space of the most frequent VEs. In particular we investigate whether and to what extent the VEs cover all the types of vagueness in the three languages. Quantitative and qualitative analysis brings evidence about a high convergence in the vagueness functions expressed by the VEs of the three languages.

Phrasal Verbs through the Lens of Cognitive Linguistics. A Study of Adverbial Particles in British and American Varieties through TV Crime Series
2021
This book has three main aims: (I) to determine the usefulness of English phrasal verbs for L2 learners based on their freq…
The spoken core of British English: a diachronic analysis based on the BNC
2008
This research takes as its starting point a frequency analysis of the demographicspoken subcorpus of the British National Corpus in order to focus on two aspects of the evolution of spoken core vocabulary in British English. The first is the impact on the core of contact with other languages and, the second, the role of lexical innovation and/or replacement in the history of this core. Our analysis, which, to a certain extent, follows up on that carried out in Fuster (2007) questions the hypothesis that the spoken core is immune to foreign influence or that it is highly resistant to change. pennock@uv.es; fuster@uv.es
Coordinate compounding in English and Spanish
2011
Coordinate compounding is a process which has been only sporadically considered in wordformation studies on Germanic and Romance languages. In this paper, we compare the situation in English with that in Spanish as far as formal structure and semantics are concerned. To this end, an operational definition of coordinate compounding is first provided, after which a semantic classification of coordinate compounds is developed. For each type, variants are discussed, representative examples are provided, and similarities and dissimilarities between the two languages are highlighted. We finish by raising the issues of recursiveness and productivity in coordinate compounding and we examine the pos…
Innovative pragmatic codes in Ugandan English : a relevance-theoretic account
2013
Published version of an article in the journal: Argumentum. Also available from the publisher at: http://argumentum.unideb.hu/2013-anyagok/bisingoma.pdf Open access The paper investigates innovative pragmatic codes in Ugandan English within the conceptual framework of Relevance Theory (cf. Sperber & Wilson 1986, Wilson & Sperber 2004). Wilson & Sperber (2004) state that an utterance is optimally relevant if it is worth the hearer’s processing effort, and if it is compatible with the speaker’s linguistic abilities and preferences. The reasoning behind these tenets of Relevance Theory can be used to account for the pervasive use of many expressions peculiar to Ugandan English. For example, in…
