The paper will offer a reading of John Akomfrah’s The Nine Muses (2010), a 90-minute experimental feature film that has been defined as “one of the most vital and original artistic responses to the subject of immigration that British cinema has ever produced” (Mitchell). It will focus on the multifarious ways in which the film makes the “canonical” literary material that it incorporates, including Shakespeare, interact with rarely seen archival material from the BBC regarding the experience of Caribbean and South Asian immigrants in 1950s and 1960s Britain. It will argue that through this interaction the familiarity of Western “canonical” literature re-presents itself as an uncanny landscap…

Even though O. Wilde's Irishness is difficult to trace, there is a profound sense of Irishness underlying his life and much of what he wrote and thought, especially in his correspondence. In my paper, I evaluate the role of Irishness within his life and work in order to assess how it shapes and influences his own thinking and writing. Perhaps considered as one facet of his all-interesting multifarious doubleness, still, it occupies a specific role within reception studies and explains why there has always been a strong interest towards his life and work among his fellow countrymen.

This article looks at how the « English line” became one of the defining features of Englishness from the 1920s to the 1950s. It is based on texts by Michael Ayrton, Robin Ironside, John Piper and Nikolaus Pevsner that were published during or just after the Second World War, and that contributed to a contemporary critical reassessment of English art.
Victorian Enghlishness and the Continent

Dickens, Barrett Browning, Thackeray and Gaskell are all writers who examined Englishness in relation to the Continent (France, Germany and Italy. They all started from a nostalgia for a golden age, lost in England, but which they believed still persisted in those countries. This allowed them to point out the faults of the English ( feeling of superiority, hypocrisy), and their virtues (family feeling, hard work). The variations in these oppositions all tend to underline what could be seen as the true marker of Englishness, an openness to what is positive in other culture and a capacity to integrate what others have to offer whilst remaining themselves.
