Evaluation of labial microvessels in Sjogren syndrome: A videocapillaroscopic study

2008

Summary Sjogren's syndrome (SS) is a chronic autoimmune rheumatic disease characterized by a progressive lymphocytic infiltration of exocrine glands, especially salivary and lachrymal ones, leading to xerostomia, parotid gland enlargement, and xerophtalmia. SS may occur alone (primary) or in association with almost any of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases (secondary), the most frequent being rheumatoid arthritis. The aim of this study is to describe the capillaroscopic pattern of the labial mucosa in patients with SS. Methods A total of 20 patients affected by SS and 20 healthy controls were examined. The patients with conditions that compromise microcirculation, such as diabetes, hypertens…

Oral lesions in patients with primary Sjögren?s syndrome. A case-control cross-sectional study

2019

Background To evaluate the presence of oral lesions in a group of patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS) and compare these results with a matched control group (CG). Material and Methods An observational cross-sectional study was conducted. 61 pSS patients (60 women, 1 man, mean age 57.64±13.52) diagnosed according to the American European Criteria (2002), and 122 matched control patients (120 women, 2 men, mean age 60.02±13.13) were included. Demographic and medical data, oral lesions and salivary flow rate were collected. Results Compared with the controls, pSS patients were 3.95 more likely to have oral lesions (OR 3.95; 95% CI 2.06-7.58; p=0.0001). 57.4% pSS patients presented o…

Barbarians at the gate... the ideas of Europe in CEE

2011

The central aim of this work is to present some ideas of Europe in Central and Eastern Europe through three phases, the Soviet period, the pre-accession (to the EU) period and, finally, the post-accession period. Throughout those periods, Central and Eastern European states faced different conditions and challenges however Europe consistently remained a point of reference in the states’ intellectual and political reflections. This work is meant to contribute to understanding the rationale and reason behind the policy directions chosen in CEE in the later half of the 20th and formative part of the 21st centuries.

EMU Enlargement, Stabilization Cost and Automatic Stabilizers

2008

We use a new approach to assess long-term fiscal developments. By analyzing the time-varying behaviour of the two components of government spendingandrevenue–responsivenessandpersistence–, a feature not captured by automatic stabilisers, we are able to infer about the sources of fiscal deterioration (improvement). Drawing on quarterly data, we estimate recursively these components within a system of government revenue and spending equations using a Three-Stage Least Squaremethod for eight EuropeanUnion countries plus the US. The results suggest that significant changes in the fiscal stance (including those related to the current crisis) are reflected in the estimates of persistence and resp…

Are the New EU Countries Ready for the EURO? A Comparison of Costs and Benefits

2006

This paper examines the main macroeconomic determinants of costs and benefits of adopting the euro for the new EU member countries, and compares them to those of the older members. We show that these cost and benefit factors exhibit substantial variability across the countries considered. Our findings suggest that, in terms of price stability, the position of the new members is overall better than some EMU countries, such as Portugal and Greece. At the same time, we identify countries (such as Slovenia, Cyprus, and Hungary) whose business cycle is already well synchronized with EMU's, but also countries (such as Latvia and Estonia) with lower synchronization, and countries (such as Romania,…

Los oficiales y subalternos de la Real Audiencia de Mallorca (1716-1808)

2019

The objective of this work is to know the organic structure of the officers and subordinates of the Royal Court of Majorca during the 18th century, which was the essence of the high judicial administration insular. Because of that, we approached through these relatively extensive professionals, with the description of their functions, who they were and how they obtained their charges. The article ends with an epilogue dedicated to the enlargement of the Royal Court with the creation of the second chamber during the reformist stage of Charles III to improve the high judicial administration insular.

Inflammatory fibro-epithelial hyperplasia related to a fixed implant-supported prosthesis : a case report

2018

The gingival overgrowth is a common finding in the clinical practice with a diverse etiology. There are no treatment guidelines defined for this oral lesions. These can provoke discomfort to the patient and often, can alter the function of the stomatologic system. This article presents a case report of a bilateral gingival overgrowth in a 68 years old woman wearing a fixed upper-arch implant-supported prosthesis placed five years ago. The clinical exam after removing the prosthesis showed an intense accumulation of plaque around the intermediate abutments associated to a mucosal enlargement with suppuration on touching the buccal area of the implant in position 1.5 and a probing depth of 8m…

Geneses of Labour Market Turnover: Job Search and Entrepreneurial Aspirations On-the-job

2005

In this paper we study the labour market behavior of employed individuals that have entrepreneurial aspirations in addition to aspirations to switch job. We analyze empirically these two “search processes” side-by-side and report three main findings: First, neither entrepreneurial aspirations nor aspirations to switch job are uncommon, but only few are engaged in both search processes. Second, the two processes are not alike: It is more difficult to empirically explain entrepreneurial aspirations than aspirations to switch job. Only few observable characteristics of the employed are related to both processes. Varied experience and job dissatisfaction are directly related to the probability …

The role of acoustic rhinometry in the diagnosis of adenoidal hypertrophy in pre-school children.

1999

Adenoidal hypertrophy is a common problem in pre-school children and diagnosis depends mostly on evaluation of clinical symptoms and signs. Investigative techniques to assess adenoidal size often do not add to this information. Recent reports have suggested a role for acoustic rhinometry in this situation. A total of 49 children consecutively referred to the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, University of Mainz, with evidence of adenoidal enlargement underwent acoustic rhinometry pre- and post-operatively and were compared to an age-matched control group from a local kindergarten school. Adenoidal size was visually estimated at surgery and questionnaires were completed by parents of sympto…

Impact of the Prone Position in an Animal Model of Unilateral Bacterial Pneumonia Undergoing Mechanical Ventilation

2013

Abstract Background: The prone position (PP) has proven beneficial in patients with severe lung injury subjected to mechanical ventilation (MV), especially in those with lobar involvement. We assessed the impact of PP on unilateral pneumonia in rabbits subjected to MV. Methods: After endobronchial challenge with Enterobacter aerogenes, adult rabbits were subjected to either “adverse” (peak inspiratory pressure = 30 cm H2O, zero end-expiratory pressure; n = 10) or “protective” (tidal volume = 8 ml/kg, 5 cm H2O positive end-expiratory pressure; n = 10) MV and then randomly kept supine or turned to the PP. Pneumonia was assessed 8 h later. Data are presented as median (interquartile range). Re…
