The effect of body shape and gender on wireless Body Area Network on-body channels
2010
Technological advancements have made possible the emergence of Body Area Networks (BANs). There are numerous on-body channel characterizations in the literature performed on a phantom or a single human subject. In this paper, using multiple subjects, we consider the effect of body shape and gender on the on-body channel. A characterization of a narrowband on-body to on-body channel among different subjects is presented. The paper investigates the relationship between the propagation and the subject's physical characteristics. The investigation is performed at 2360 MHz; the new medical band undergoing FCC approval. Our results show that the path loss in women is less than that in men and the…

Giraffid remains from several Neogene localities from the Temel Basin (Spain) are stu died. The material belongs to the following sites: Masia de la Roma and Masia del Barbo (Vallesian); Masada del Valle 2 (Turolian); La Gloria 4 and La Calera (Alfambrian). Fos sils recently obtained are described, with special emphasis on the Pliocene taxa that were previously unrecorded in this basin. The presence of Decennatheriumpachecoi in the Va llesian and Birgerbohlinia schaubi in the Turolian is specified here. In order to make a dis tinction between both species two characteristics can be pointed out among the rest: the postcranial skeleton of Decennatherium is more slender than the one of Bir…
Dendritic pattern development of the honeybee antennal lobe neurons: a laser scanning confocal microscopic study
1999
The processing of odorant signals is performed, in the olfactory bulb of vertebrates or in the antennal lobe of insects, by different types of neurons which display specific morphological and functional features. The present work characterizes the morphogenesis of the main neuronal types which participate in olfactory discrimination in the adult honeybee (Apis mellifera). Neurons were stained intracellularly with Lucifer yellow at different stages of pupal development and in the adult, and imaged by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Attending to branching patterns, all pupal neurons could be attributed to morphological types previously established in the adult. Given the functional import…
Estreñimiento funcional: estudio prospectivo y respuesta al tratamiento
2005

Host plant and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi show contrasting responses to temperature increase: Implications for dioecious plants
2014
Individual plants live in complex environments where they interact with other organisms such as herbivores, pollinators, fungi and pathogens. The influence of rising temperature on biotic interactions has begun to receive attention, and is an important research frontier currently. However, the belowground interactions with organisms such as arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi have received little attention so far. In this study, we investigated the response of the dioecious plant Antennaria dioica and its AM fungi to increased temperature in a controlled environment simulating the period of growth of A. dioica in central Finland. Specifically, we evaluated the effect of rising temperature on …
A circularly polarized wideband high gain patch antenna for wireless power transfer
2018
This article deals with a microstrip patch antenna working at 868 MHz, suitable for the radio frequency wireless power transfer and energy harvesting applications. The proposed monolithic antenna is compact, lightweight and it is printed on a thick substrate in order to maximize the total gain in the broadside direction. The antenna radiates at 868 MHz with a fractional impedance bandwidth of 5% and it shows a gain of 4.14 dB.
Anode current saturation of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs
2018
We have measured and compared the characteristics of ALD-coated Planacon MCP-PMTs (XP85112/A1-Q-L) with their non-ALD counterparts (XP85012/A1-Q). While the later show excellent performance, the ALD-coated sensors have surprisingly low current saturation levels (~two orders of magnitude lower than expected) and extremely high gain recovery time (more than 7 orders of magnitude higher than expected). We suspect that these problems might be caused by the unexpected side-effects of the ALD process. To make a definite conclusion, more samples need to be tested, preferably from different production runs. If our observation were confirmed, it would mean a serious technological setback for ALD-coa…
A Closed Book: Opacity of the Human Self in Mullā Ṣadrā
2014
Mullā Ṣadrā Shīrāzī (d. 1636) subscribes at large to the Avicennian view according to which the human subject is always and fully aware of herself. At the same time, his eschatology hinges on the Qur’ānic motive of the soul as a closed book that is first opened on the Final Day, that is, on the idea that each soul’s share in the afterlife should be understood as the full revelation of the soul’s true nature to itself. The two ideas thus have seemingly contradictory entailments: the soul is fully aware of and transparent to itself, but at the same time it has aspects that can remain opaque to it, at least in this life. The task of this paper is to investigate whether Ṣadrā can coherently hol…
