Physiological responses and central nervous projections of antennal olfactory receptor neurons in the adult desert locust, Schistocerca gregaria (Ort…
1996
Olfactory receptor neurons present in two morphological sensillum types on the male Schistocerca gregaria antenna were for the first time investigated physiologically when stimulated with behaviourally relevant odours. Neurons present in trichoid/basiconic sensilla showed clear excitatory responses to compounds present in the male-produced aggregation pheromone and also to a plant produced compound. Sensilla could be categorised physiologically according to the responses of their receptor neurons to the tested stimuli. Also receptor neurons present in sensilla coeloconica responded to aggregation pheromone components, but always in an inhibitory fashion. These neurons could, however, be exc…
Fine Structure of Antennal Sensilla of Paysandisia archon and Electrophysiological Responses to Volatile Compounds Associated with Host Palms
2014
Paysandisia archon (Lepidoptera: Castniidae) is a serious pest of palm trees. A comprehensive knowledge of the insect olfactory system is essential for the development of efficient semiochemical-based control methods. The olfactory sensilla are located particularly on the antennae, and these can detect plant volatiles that provide important cues for the insects in the search for their host plants. To date, the fine structure of P. archon antennal sensilla studies and their role in host-plant perception have not been investigated in great detail. Using light microscopy and scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the antennae of both sexes of P. archon are described here in detail, acc…
Francesco Paolo Neglia.
Optical Plasmonic Nano-Antennas Array for Energy Harvesting Applications
2019
Optical nanoantennas have been of great interest recently due to their ability to support a highly efficient, localized surface plasmon resonance and produce significantly enhanced and highly confined electromagnetic fields. The Yagi nanoantenna, an optical analog of the well-established radiofrequency Yagi antenna, stands out by its efficient unidirectional light emission and enhancement. In this paper, an investigation on a novel optical plasmonic nanoantennas array for energy harvesting application is proposed. The study of a novel Yagi nanorectennas array, by optimizing its geometrical parameters, is reported. All the simulations are carried out by using the CST Studio Suite 2018 softwa…
Planar metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency for plasmonic sensing.
2009
We experimentally demonstrate a planar metamaterial analogue of electromagnetically induced transparency at optical frequencies. The structure consists of an optically bright dipole antenna and an optically dark quadrupole antenna, which are cut-out structures in a thin gold film. A pronounced coupling-induced reflectance peak is observed within a broad resonance spectrum. A metamaterial sensor based on these coupling effects is experimentally demonstrated and yields a sensitivity of 588 nm/RIU and a figure of merit of 3.8.
FDTD analysis of E-sectoral horn antennas for broad-band applications
1997
The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is applied to study the performance of E-plane sectoral horn antennas designed for broad-band applications. These antennas (proposed for 6-18 GHz phased arrays) have a large bandwidth, and they are easily array integrated. These antennas have a highly complicated geometry that is modeled using a polygonal approximation in the curved boundaries. Perfect matched layers (PMLs) combined with first-order absorbing boundaries are employed to simulate the free-space environment in the FDTD mesh.
Distributed Resource Allocation for Energy Efficiency in OFDMA Multicell Networks with Wireless Power Transfer
2019
In this paper, an energy-efficient resource allocation problem is investigated for the wireless power transfer (WPT)-enabled OFDMA multicell networks. In the considered system, multiple base stations (BSs) with a large number of antennas are responsible to provide WPT in the downlink, and the users can recycle and utilize the received energy for uplink data transmission. The role of BS is to execute WPT; thus, there are no data transmissions in the downlink. A time-division protocol is considered to divide the time of downlink WPT and uplink wireless information transfer into separate time slots. With the objective to improve the energy efficiency, we propose the time, subcarrier, and power…
Joint Spectral and Energy Efficiency Optimization for Downlink NOMA Networks
2020
Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) holds the promise to be a key enabler of 5G communication. However, the existing design of NOMA systems must be optimized to achieve maximum rate while using minimum transmit power. To do so, this paper provides a novel technique based on multi-objective optimization to efficiently allocate resources in the multi-user NOMA systems supporting downlink transmission. Specifically, our unique optimization technique jointly improves spectrum and energy efficiency while satisfying the constraints on users quality of services (QoS) requirements, transmit power budget and successive interference cancellation. We first formulate a joint problem for spectrum and …
The taint of torture and the brazilian legal system
2019
In Brazil, the practice of torture intertwines deeply with its own history. The literature on the subject has had a greater intensification on its registers during the Dictatorial Regime (1964 to 1985). In spite of the Brazilian Constitution of 1988, Brazil only makes efforts to investigate the crimes of torture of this period to comply with the provisions of the United Nations in 2011. Within this scenario, the NationalTruth Commission (Law 12.528, of November 2011) was created with the purpose of clarifying the facts and circumstances of cases concerning human rights violations, as well as the Law on Access to Information (Law 12.527 of November 2011), which have regulated the constitutio…
Target Classification by mmWave FMCW Radars Using Machine Learning on Range-Angle Images
2021
In this paper, we present a novel multiclass-target classification method for mmWave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar operating in the frequency range of 77 - 81 GHz, based on custom range-angle heatmaps and machine learning tools. The elevation field of view (FoV) is increased by orienting the Radar antennas in elevation. In this orientation, the radar focuses the beam in elevation to improve the elevation FoV. The azimuth FoV is improved by mechanically rotating the Radar horizontally, which has antenna elements oriented in the elevation direction. The data from the Radar measurements obtained by mechanical rotation of the Radar in Azimuth are used to generate a range-angl…
