Experimental studies of the NaRb ground-state potential up to thev″=76level

2002

Laser induced fluorescence spectra of the C {sup 1}{sigma}{sup +}-X {sup 1}{sigma}{sup +} system of {sup 23}Na{sup 85}Rb and {sup 23}Na{sup 87}Rb have allowed vibrational levels of the electronic ground state up to v{sup ''}=76, spanning 99.85% of the potential well to be observed. The ground-state term values have been fitted to a Dunham polynomial expansion, and also to a direct modified Lennard-Jones (MLJ) potential. The analytical MLJ construction allowed us to match previous measured term values for v{sup ''}{<=}30 with long-range behavior of the potential through the intermediate internuclear distance region covered by the present investigation.

Electrodynamic Characteristics of a Strip Antenna Located on a Plane Interface of a Resonant Magnetoplasma and an Isotropic Medium

2015

We study the electrodynamic characteristics of an antenna having the form of an infinitesimally thin, perfectly conducting narrow strip located on a plane interface of a resonant magnetoplasma and an isotropic medium. The antenna is perpendicular to an external magnetic field and is excited by a given voltage. Singular integral equations for the antenna current, on the basis of which the current distribution is found in the case of an infinitely long radiator, are obtained. The limits of applicability of an approximate method based on the transmission line theory for determining the current distribution and input impedance of the antenna are established. Within the framework of this method,…

The aperture for UHE tau neutrinos of the Auger fluorescence detector using a Digital Elevation Map

2005

We perform a new study of the chances of the fluorescence detector (FD) at the Pierre Auger Observatory to detect the tau leptons produced by Earth-skimming ultra high energy tau neutrinos. We present a new and more detailed evaluation of the effective aperture of the FD that considers a reliable fiducial volume for the experimental set up. In addition, we take into account the real elevation profile of the area near Auger. We find a significant increase in the number of expected events with respect to the predictions of a previous semi-analytical determination, and our results show the enhancement effect for neutrino detection from the presence of the near mountains.

Casimir-Polder interatomic potential between two atoms at finite temperature and in the presence of boundary conditions

2007

We evaluate the Casimir-Polder potential between two atoms in the presence of an infinite perfectly conducting plate and at nonzero temperature. In order to calculate the potential, we use a method based on equal-time spatial correlations of the electric field, already used to evaluate the effect of boundary conditions on interatomic potentials. This method gives also a transparent physical picture of the role of a finite temperature and boundary conditions on the Casimir-Polder potential. We obtain an analytical expression of the potential both in the near and far zones, and consider several limiting cases of interest, according to the values of the parameters involved, such as atom-atom d…

Solar Nanoantennas energy based characterization

2016

Solar nanoantennas appear a very interesting solution to exploit solar radiation, as a matter of fact, their operating principle allows heat losses to be lessened compared to traditional photovoltaic cells and efficiency to be increased. Anyway, some technological issues are to be overcome. Literature often proposes a characterization by radiation efficiency typical of traditional antennas. Since the aim of solar nanoantennas is to harvest energy, in this paper the most promising devices are characterized by the upper bound of deliverable power density calculated in the whole operating wavelengths range.

Building Partial Discharge Signal Wireless Probes

2014

This chapter focuses on the evaluation of the performances of different antenna sensors suitable for Partial Discharge (PD) measurements. Monopole, triangular and spherical antennas were simulated by means of the surface method of moments. The transmitting system is modeled by a power electronic device with a fault current between two metal plates. The shape of the simulated, transmitted and received signals, has been compared to verify the sensor that provides the best fidelity among the three. The auto-correlation function and the Pearson correlation index are adopted here for the comparison. A discussion on the dynamic characteristic of the different antenna probes and their use in diffe…

Detection of Radiated EM Transients by Exploiting Compact Spherical Antenna Features

2011

In this paper, the features of a compact spherical antenna, already efficiently used for ultra wide band applications, are investigated by exploiting the possibility of detecting electromagnetic transients with frequency content up to the very high frequency range. Transient phenomena with the above mentioned frequency content are those encountered, for example, in partial discharge detection. The behaviour of the adopted compact spherical antenna enables to successfully detect the waveform of typical partial discharge transient radiated electromagnetic field, so preserving the information necessary for the subsequent pattern analysis, typically carried out by using classical conducted meas…

Simulation of surface-controlled phase separation in slit pores: Diffusive Ginzburg-Landau kinetics versus Molecular Dynamics

2008

The phase separation kinetics of binary fluids in constrained geometry is a challenge for computer simulation, since nontrivial structure formation occurs extending from the atomic scale up to mesoscopic scales, and a very large range of time needs to be considered. One line of attack to this problem is to try nevertheless standard Molecular Dynamics (MD), another approach is to coarse-grain the model to apply a time-dependent nonlinear Ginzburg–Landau equation that is numerically integrated. For a symmetric binary mixture confined between two parallel walls that prefer one species, both approaches are applied and compared to each other. There occurs a nontrivial interplay between the forma…

Atmospheric turbulence in phase-referenced and wide-field interferometric images

2010

Phase referencing is a standard calibration procedure in radio interferometry. It allows us to detect weak sources by using quasisimultaneous observations of closeby sources acting as calibrators. However, atmospheric turbulence may introduce strong differences in the optical paths of the signals of the target and calibrator and affect, or even waste, phase referencing in cases of relatively large calibrator-to-target separations and/or bad weather. The situation is similar in wide-field interferometric observations. We present the results of a Monte Carlo study of the astrometric precision and sensitivity of an interferometric array (a realization of the Square Kilometre Array, SKA) in pha…

Light weight, thin plastic foil, X-ray telescopes

2002

We present results from a program to develop an X-ray telescope made from thin plastic shells. Our initial results have been obtained from multi-shell cylindrical lenses that are used in a point-to-point configuration to image the small focal spot of a an X-ray tube on a microchannel plate detector. We describe the steps that led up to the present design and present data from the tests that have been used to identify the properties of the plastic material that make it a suitable X-ray reflector. We discuss two applications of our technology to X-ray missions that are designed to address some of the scientific priorities set forth in NASA's long term plans for high energy astrophysics. One m…
