Negative differential resistance and threshold-switching in conical nanopores with KF solutions

Negative differential resistance (NDR) phenomena are under-explored in nanostructures operating in the liquid state. We characterize experimentally the NDR and threshold switching phenomena observed when conical nanopores are immersed in two identical KF solutions at low concentration. Sharp current drops in the nA range are obtained for applied voltages exceeding thresholds close to 1 V and a wide frequency window, which suggests that the threshold switching can be used to amplify small electrical perturbations because a small change in voltage typically results in a large change in current. First moments of the nucleon generalized parton distributions from lattice QCD

We report on our lattice calculations of the nucleon's generalized parton distributions (GPDs), concentrating on their first moments for the case of N_f=2. Due to recent progress on the numerical side we are able to present results for the generalized form factors at pion masses as low as 260 MeV. We perform a fit to one-loop covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with encouraging results.
Nucleon mass and pion-nucleon sigma term from a chiral analysis of lattice QCD world data

The chiral behavior of the nucleon mass is studied within the covariant SU(2) baryon chiral perturbation theory up to order p4. Lattice QCD data for the ensembles of 2 and 2 + 1 flavors are separately fitted, paying special attention to explicit Δ(1232) degrees of freedom, finite volume corrections and finite spacing effects. In the case of the 2 flavor ensemble, we fit simultaneously nucleon mass data together with new and updated data for the σπN term both in their dimensionless forms and determine a Sommer-scale of r0 = 0.493(23) fm. Military and civilian applications of nuclear energy have left a significant amount of spent nuclear fuel over the past 70 years. Currently, in many countries world wide, the use of nuclear energy is on the rise. Therefore, the management of highly radioactive nuclear waste is a pressing issue. In this letter, we explore antineutrino detectors as a tool for monitoring and safeguarding nuclear waste material. We compute the flux and spectrum of antineutrinos emitted by spent nuclear fuel elements as a function of time, and we illustrate the usefulness of antineutrino detectors in several benchmark scenarios. A stereoselective and electrocatalytic coupling reaction of isoeugenol has been reported for the first time in a 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP)/boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode system. This particular C-C bond formation and diastereoselectivity is driven by a solvate interaction between the radical species and another isoeugenol molecule. Due to an electrocatalytic cycle, only understoichiometric amounts of charge are necessary. Since electric current is directly employed as the oxidant, the reaction is metal and reagent-free. Reaction of the tridentate aminoalcohol phenol ligands 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((2 hydroxyethyl)(methyl)amino)methyl)phenol (H2L1) and 2,4-di-tert-butyl-6-(((1-hydroxybutan-2-yl)amino)methyl)phenol (H2L2) with [MoO2(acac)2] in methanol solutions resulted in the formation of [MoO2(L1)(MeOH)] (1) and [MoO2(L2)(MeOH)] (3), respectively. In contrast, the analogous reactions in acetonitrile afforded the dinuclear complexes [Mo2O2(μ-O)2(L1)2] (2) and [Mo2O2(μ-O)2(L2)2] (4). Gold/Isophorone Interaction Driven by Keto/Enol Tautomerization

The binding behavior of isophorone (C9H14O) to Au adatoms and clusters deposited on MgO/Ag(001) thin films is investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT). The STM data reveal the formation of various metal/organic complexes, ranging from Au1/isophorone pairs to larger Au aggregates with molecules bound to their perimeter. DFT calculations find the energetically preferred keto-isophorone to be unreactive toward gold, while the enol-tautomer readily binds to Au monomers and clusters. Regioselective Metal- and Reagent-Free Arylation of Benzothiophenes by Dehydrogenative Electrosynthesis.

A novel strategy for the synthesis of biaryls consisting of a benzothiophene and a phenol moiety is reported. These heterobiaryls are of utmost interest for pharmaceutical, biological, and high-performance optoelectronic applications. The metal- and reagent-free, electrosynthetic, and highly efficient method enables the generation of 2- and 3-(hydroxyphenyl)benzo[b]thiophenes in a regioselective fashion. The described one-step synthesis is easy to conduct, scalable, and inherently safe. The products are afforded in high yields of up to 88 % and with exquisite selectivity. The reaction also features a broad scope and tolerates a large variety of functional groups.

Multifunctional conformational switches based on the ferrocenyl-salicylic acid amide motif with increasing additional complexity at the Fc moiety (R = COOMe, CONHEt, CONHFc; H-2–H-4; Fc = ferrocenyl) have been prepared and their preferred secondary structures in solution have been elucidated by NMR and IR spectroscopy in combination with conformational searches based on DFT calculations. Structure proof of (—)-myrtenol, 3-cyclopentenyl-1-methanol and 5-norbornene-2-endo-methanol has been obtained from their proton magnetic resonance spectra in carbon tetrachloride containing different added amounts of tris(dipivaloylmethanato)europium. For each alcohol, a 1:1 complex structure with Eu(dpm)3 could be computed, in which the calculated pseudocontact shift effects on all skeleton protons of the ring system were consistent with the observed shift effect values. A considerable contact contribution of opposite sign to that of the pseudocontact part of the effect could be estimated for the methylene protons of the CH2OH group.
