Evolution of the forest landscape in the Punic Eparchy area (West Sicily): the importance of cork oak in natural residual vegetation for the purposes…
2018
The natural forest vegetation in the territory of the western provinces of Sicily (Palermo, Trapani and Agrigento) has almost completely disappeared. This area coincides with the ancient administrative ter- ritorial unit that precedes the division into three "valleys" of the most inhabited island of the Mediterranean: it is the Val di Mazara, remembered by archaeologists as "Punic Eparchy". As a seat of important Greek cities (Himera, Solunto, Entella, Agrigento, Gela, Eraclea Minoa, Segesta, Selinunte, Erice, Lilibeo, Mozia, etc.), it was a Punic domain before being abandoned. Due to the lack of a marked relief and the benefit of climate, agriculture was practiced for three millennia. In t…
Microscopy and Molecular biology techniques for the study biocenosis diversity in semi-confined environments
2010
This study is part of a wider conservation project of artistic and anthropological finds located in the Grotto of the Saints (Licodia Eubea, Alia, Sicily), and represents an opportunity for investigating the micro-and macro biological systems colonizing this particular environment. It is well-known that the bio-receptivity of surfaces is strongly related to its constituent materials and environmental parameters, whose effects promote the establishment of specific biotic communities. This is particularly true for caves, hypogea and semi-confined environments and, in particular for the Grotto of the Saints, where besides the presence of different nutrient sources, there are also high humidity…
By-catch of cetaceans and other species of conservation concern during pair trawl fishing operations in the Adriatic Sea (Italy)
2010
By-catch is one of the main sources of anthropogenic mortality in marine species of conservation concern worldwide. Between 2006 and 2008, the Consorzio Nazionale Interuniversitario per le Scienze del Mare (CoNISMa) coordinated a monitoring programme of cetacean by-catch in Italian pelagic trawlers, funded in compliance with European Regulation 812/2004. Sixteen independent observers monitored a total of 3141 hauls. The observation coverage ranged between 0.9 and 6.3% of the regional fishing effort. Almost all by-catch events were recorded in the northern Adriatic Sea. By-catch rates of bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and loggerhead turtles (Caretta caretta) were 0.0006 and 0.0255 …

Role of Matrix Metalloproteinases 2,9 (MMP-2,-9), Orphanin FQ and Others Peptides in Vascular Tone of Human Umbilical Cord at Term
2008
Umbilical cord is the structure that connects the fetus to the placenta. Umbilical cord at term is made of three vessels surrounded by the Wharton's Jelly, a mocous connective tissue rich in glycosaminoglycans, proteoglycans and different types of collagens and other microfibrils, which are responsible for its elasticity and its mechanical properties. Umbilical cord seems to lack any capillaries or lymphatics and umbilical vessels are unique in lacking any innervation of the vascular tone, and the expression of some enzymes responsible for the remodelling of the extracellular matrix. Trough immunihistochemistry we investigated the expression of matrix metallo-peptidase 2 and 9 (MMP-2, MMP-9…
Human umbilical cord expresses several vasoactive peptides involved in the local regulation of vascular tone: protein and gene expression of Orphanin…
2011
Full-term human umbilical cord contains three blood vessels: two arteries coiled around a vein and surrounded by Wharton’s jelly, a mucous tissue with few mesenchymal stromal cells and abundant extracellular matrix. Umbilical vessels lack innervations, thus endothelial cells must play a role in the control of blood flow. The aim of this study was to investigate in human umbilical cord the expression of five peptides that could be involved in the regulation of vascular tone: Orphanin FQ, Oxytocin, Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (ANP), endothelial Nitric Oxide Synthase (eNOS) and inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS). The expression of these molecules in full-term human umbilical cord …
Immunohistochemical and Biomolecular Identification of Orphanin FQ, eNOS, Atrial natriuretic Factor and Oxytocin in Rat Seminal Vesicles
2009
In previous studies performed on rodents, we detected the presence of adreno-cholinergic and peptidergic innervation in seminal vesicles and other organs of the male genital system, such as prostate and ductus deferens, in which we also investigated the expression of NOS and NADPH-diaphorase. During the present project we focused our attention on the expression of some peptides involved in local control of smooth muscle relaxation, contractility, vasodilatation and control of blood flow in rat seminal vesicles. We investigated, through immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR, the presence of four peptides: orphanin, eNOS, ANF and oxytocin. Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the presence of the…
Comportamento della eNOS e dell'iNOS nella genesi e mantwnimento delle ulcere venose degli arti inferiori
2019
Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) and venous ulcers in the lower areas are widespread problems with a prevalence of 1% - 2% in the western population. The pathophysiology of this pathological manifestation is not yet fully clarified and it can be assumed that a multifactorial genesis should be considered. Certainly the high pressure values in the peripheral venous system, the defective valves in the capillary network, the increase in permeability and capillary neogenesis (discharge of liquids in the extracellular compartment - + edema), the discharge of fibrinogen and the subsequent formation of a pericapillary fibrin cuff are the most important mechanisms related to hypoxia and skin isc…
