Quantifying stenosis in renal arteriograms: a fuzzy syntactic analysis.
1999
AbstractThe introduction of fuzzy logic improves a system for the automatic quantification of renal artery lesions seen in digital subtraction angiograms. A two-step approach has been followed. An earlier system based on non-fuzzy syntactic analysis provided a clear symbolic description of the stenotic lesions. Although this system worked correctly, it did not take into account the variability and uncertainty inherent to image processing and to knowledge on the reference diameter. This system has been improved by the introduction of fuzzy logic in the representation of the reference diameter. It provides a description of the stenosis in terms of fuzzy quantities. To illustrate the benefits …
Abstract TMP17: Revacept, an Inhibitor of Platelet Adhesion in Patients With Symptomatic Carotid Artery Stenosis. Safety Data From the International …
2020
Introduction: Revacept is a novel vascular lesion-directed inhibitor of platelet adhesion and thrombus formation, exhibiting no effects on the homeostatic functions of circulating platelets. Objective: The effects of Revacept on plaque-mediated thrombosis were investigated in patients with symptomatic stenosis of the internal carotid artery (at least 50%, following ECST-criteria). Methods: Within an international, prospective, multicenter (n=16), randomized trial 158 patients could be randomized to receive placebo, or 40/120 mg Revacept by intravenous infusion over 20 minutes. Cerebrovascular events and cardiovascular complications were followed up to 3 months. Results: 158 patients were f…
Numerical approach to problems of gravitational instability of geostructures with advected material boundaries
1998
SUMMARY We present a numerical approach for solving 2-D mantle flow problems where the chemical composition changes abruptly across intermediate boundaries. The method combines a Galerkin-spline technique with a method of integration over regions bounded by advected interfaces to represent discontinuous variations of material parameters. It allows direct approximation of a natural free surface position, instead of a posteriori calculation of topography from the normal stress at the upper free-slip boundary. We formulate a model where a viscous incompressible fluid filling a square box is divided into layers (not necessarily horizontal) by advected boundaries, across which the density and vi…

Aging Negatively Affects Estrogens-Mediated Effects on Nitric Oxide Bioavailability by Shifting ERα/ERβ Balance in Female Mice
2011
AIMS: Aging is among the major causes for the lack of cardiovascular protection by estrogen (E2) during postmenopause. Our study aims to determine the mechanisms whereby aging changes E2 effects on nitric oxide (NO) production in a mouse model of accelerated senescence (SAM). METHODS AND RESULTS: Although we found no differences on NO production in females SAM prone (SAMP, aged) compared to SAM resistant (SAMR, young), by either DAF-2 fluorescence or plasmatic nitrite/nitrate (NO2/NO3), in both cases, E2 treatment increased NO production in SAMR but had no effect in SAMP. Those results are in agreement with changes of eNOS protein and gene expression. E2 up-regulated eNOS expression in SAMR…
Hormonal regulation of S-adenosylmethionine synthase transcripts in pea ovaries
1996
Two cDNA clones coding for S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthase (SAMs, EC 2.5.1.6) have been isolated from a cDNA library of gibberellic acid-treated unpollinated pea ovaries. Both cDNAs were sequenced showing a high degree of identity but coding for different SAMs polypeptides. The presence of two SAMs genes in pea was further confirmed by Southern analysis. Expression of the SAMs genes in the pea plant was found at different levels in vegetative and reproductive tissues. We characterized the expression levels of SAMs genes during the development or senescence of pea ovaries. Northern analysis showed that transcription of SAMs genes in parthenocarpic fruits was upregulated by auxins in the sam…

The binding of natural ligands and synthetic drugs to the P2Y12 receptor is of great interest because of its crucial role in platelets activation and the therapy of arterial thrombosis. Up to now, all computational studies of P2Y12 concentrated on the available crystal structures, while the role of intrinsic protein dynamics and the membrane environment in the functioning of P2Y12 was not clear. In this work, we performed all-atom molecular dynamics simulations of the full-length P2Y12 receptor in three different membrane environments and in two possible conformations derived from available crystal structures. The binding of ticagrelor, its two major metabolites, adenosine diphosphate (ADP)…
Induction of apoptosis in cardiac myocytes by an A3 adenosine receptor agonist.
1998
The effects of the selective adenosine (ADO) A3 receptor agonist IB-MECA (N6-(3-iodobenzyl)adenosine-5'-N-methylcarboxamide) on cultured newborn rat cardiomyocytes were examined in comparison with ADO, the ADO A1 receptor-selective agonist R-PIA (N6-R-phenylisopropyladenosine), or the ADO A3 selective antagonist MRS 1191 (3-ethyl-5-benzyl-2-methyl-6-phenyl-4-phenylethynyl-1, 4-(+/-)-dihydropyridine-3,5 dicarboxylate), using digital image analysis of Feulgen-stained nuclei. At high concentration, IB-MECA (/=10 microM ) and ADO (200 microM) induced apoptosis; however, R-PIA or MRS 1191 did not have any detectable effects on cardiac cells. In addition, DNA breaks in cardiomyocytes undergoing a…
Purinoceptor-mediated modulation by endogenous and exogenous agonists of stimulation-evoked [3H]noradrenaline release on rat iris.
1992
To investigate whether endogenous purinoceptor agonists affect the sympathetic neurotransmission in the rat isolated iris, and to classify the purinoceptors modulating exocytotic [3H]-noradrenaline release, we have determined the effect of adenosine receptor antagonists on, and the relative potency of selected agonists in modulating, the field stimulation-evoked (3 Hz, 2 min) [3H]-noradrenaline overflow. In addition, the apparent affinity constants of 8-phenyltheophylline (8-PT) and 1,3-dipropyl-8-cyclopentylxanthine (DPCPX) in antagonizing the prejunctional effects of purinoceptor agonists were estimated. The relatively A1-selective DPCPX 10 and 100 nmol/l increased the evoked [3H]-noradre…
Interaction between cannabinoid CB1 receptors and endogenous ATP in the control of spontaneous mechanical activity in mouse ileum
2009
Background and purpose Although it is well accepted that cannabinoids modulate intestinal motility by reducing cholinergic neurotransmission mediated by CB(1) receptors, it is not known whether the endocannabinoids are involved in more complex circuits and if they interact with other systems. The aim of the present study was to examine possible interactions between cannabinoid CB(1) receptors and purines in the control of spontaneous contractility of longitudinal muscle in mouse ileum. Experimental approach The mechanical activity of longitudinally oriented ileal segments from mice was recorded as isometric contractions. Key results The selective CB(1) receptor agonist, N-(2-chloroethyl)5,8…
