An evaluation of the efficiency of French higher education: the case of scientific preparatory classes

Looking at the famous French elite preparatory programmes called « Classes préparatoires aux grandes écoles » (CPGE), this research aimed to study the effectiveness of their training. The objective was to know if students from science CPGE develop specific behaviours that lead them to a better academic achievement in further engineering programmes (internal effectiveness) and a better professional career after graduation (external effectiveness). En 2012, 36 projets IDEFI (Initiatives d’Excellence en Formations Innovantes) ont été sélectionnés dans le cadre du Programme d’Investissements d’Avenir (PIA). Ces projets ont été portés par différents établissements d’enseignement supérieur français, universités et écoles. Les publics visés concernent des étudiants, des lycées mais également d’autres apprenants, en emploi ou sans emploi, inscrits dans des dispositifs de formation tout au long de la vie.
