A comparison of statistical methods and multi-criteria decision making to map flood hazard susceptibility in Northern Iran
2018
In north of Iran, flood is one of the most important natural hazards that annually inflict great economic damages on humankind infrastructures and natural ecosystems. The Kiasar watershed is known as one of the critical areas in north of Iran, due to numerous floods and waste of water and soil resources, as well as related economic and ecological losses. However, a comprehensive and systematic research to identify flood-prone areas, which may help to establish management and conservation measures, has not been carried out yet. Therefore, this study tested four methods: evidential belief function (EBF), frequency ratio (FR), Technique for Order Preference by Similarity To ideal Solution (TOP…
Using the Environmental Management System (EMS) to control the implementation and emergence the green strategies
2012
International audience; Over recent years, the Environmental Management System (EMS) has become one of the most recognized instruments for operationalizing the CSR concept in companies. The objective of this study is to analyze how this management system is used in companies when they implement the intended green strategies and explore the new green strategies. To achieve this objective, two theoretical frameworks are used: the new institutionalism in organizational analysis and the levers of control of business strategy. The research methodology is qualitative and is comprises of three phases: an exploratory study; a multi-sites case study; and a longitudinal study. The data are analyzed w…
Geostatistical 3-dimensional integration of measurements of soil magnetic susceptibility.
2010
In soil magnetometry, two types of measurements are usually performed. The first type is measurements performed on the soil surface, frequently using an MS2D sensor. The second type includes measurements of magnetic susceptibility carried out in the soil profile, usually to a depth of about 30 cm. Up to now, such measurement results were analyzed separately. However, it is possible and advantageous to integrate these two types of measurements. The goal of the study was to integrate measurements of magnetic susceptibility performed on the soil surface and in the soil profile. More specifically, the goal was to obtain 3-dimensional spatial distributions of magnetic susceptibility of the topso…

Toxic cyanobacterial blooms in reservoirs under a semiarid Mediterranean climate: the magnification of a problem
2007
Sicilian reservoirs constitute the most important water resources available on the island. During summer 2001, the intense water utilization of Lake Arancio reservoir reduced the water level significantly. This coincided with the formation of intense blooms formed by the microcystin-producing cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa. During summer 2003, Lake Arancio was continuously filled and the vertical stratification of the water column was maintained, resulting in 5-6 fold lower cell numbers of Microcystis aeruginosa. For both years a significant linear relationship between microcystin net production and Microcysytis cell division was observed, implying that Microcystis cell numbers can b…
Ontological information system for the selection of technologies for the treatment and disposal of organic waste: engineering and educational aspects
2021
The article proves a problem of information processing in the field of the structuring of information and decision-making in environmental engineering, including education in this field. This article presents the ontology-information model that was used to systematize waste treatment equipment. The article presents the use of an ontological algorithm “Polyhedron” for engineers and teachers. The algorithm consists of integrating ontological solutions from abstract to specific. The proposed model consists of a general ontology of “waste treatment technologies selection”, “waste treatment equipment selection” and “Ontology for the analysis of scientific publications”. Users of the system can i…

Integrating greenness into a balanced scorecard in a food processing company
2012
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to investigate how and why a case company integrated an environmental management system (EMS) into a performance management system (PMS), specifically a balanced scorecard (BSC).Design/methodology/approachThis interpretative case study utilized qualitative methods in semi‐structured interviews, internal documents and e‐mails.FindingsThe company integrated its environmental measures into the process perspective in its BSC. The integration centralized its fragmented PMS, stimulated its strategic control and complemented its financial reporting. This integration also crystallized the causality between the company's environmental actions and financial perform…
POEMS: A Case Study of an Italian Wine-Producing Firm
2006
Over the last decade, researchers paid much attention to concepts such as Design for Environment, Extended Producer Responsibility, Responsible Chain Management, and Eco-design. Many management tools and standards (such as EMAS, ISO 14001, LCA, EPD, Ecolabel) have been developed to support companies in the evaluation and management of their environmental performance and to pursue continual environmental improvement. The more recent development of the aforesaid fields looks at interorganizational environmental management. Such an approach can complement the more traditional intraorganizational corporate environmental management approaches and tools. A typical example of this new trend is the…
Configurations of the Interactive Use of Environmental Management Control
2013
This paper explores the use of interactive environmental management control. In order to do this, a theoretical model is designed drawing on the framework of Simons (1995) and instrumental stakeholder theory. This model defines three dimensions of interactive control: forms of interactivity (vertical, horizontal, external), frequencies of interactivity (high, medium, low) and decision levels (strategic, tactical, operational). Four typical configurations emerge from application of the model to empirical data from ten case studies: eco-designers, eco-institutionals, eco-managers and eco-educators. These configurations show the diverse roles of interactive environmental management control in …
