Comparison of the greenhouse gas emissions of a high-rise residential building assessed with different national LCA approaches– IEA EBC Annex 72
2020
Introduction: The international research project IEA EBC Annex 72 investigates the life cycle related environmental impacts caused by buildings. The project aims inter alia to harmonise LCA approaches on buildings. Methods: To identify major commonalities and discrepancies among national LCA approaches, reference buildings were defined to present and compare the national approaches. A residential high-rise building located in Tianjin, China, was selected as one of the reference buildings. The main construction elements are reinforced concrete shear walls, beams and floor slabs. The building has an energy reference area of 4566 m2 and an operational heating energy demand of 250 MJ/m2a. An ex…

A global perspective on effectiveness of aid for trade
2013
Recent global initiatives on debt relief and development assistance call for increasing aid for trade to the poorest countries. The paper applies a multi-country computable general equilibrium model to measure the effectiveness of alternative aid for trade categories. The findings show that aid for trade policies expand trade and alleviate international income inequalities in the recipient countries, that will benefit mainly from aid for trade adjustment and technical assistance.
A General Equilibrium Analysis of Climate Change Impacts on Tourism
2004
This paper studies the economic implications of climate-change-induced variations in tourism demand, using a world CGE model. The model is first re-calibrated at some future years, obtaining hypothetical benchmark equilibria, which are subsequently perturbed by shocks, simulating the effects of climate change. We portray the impact of climate change on tourism by means of two sets of shocks, occurring simultaneously. The first shocks translate predicted variations in tourist flows into changes of consumption preferences for domestically produced goods. The second shocks reallocate income across world regions, simulating the effect of higher or lower tourists' expenditure. Our analysis highl…
Modelling urban networks sustainable progress
2019
In this paper, we analyse the relations between thermodynamics and city networks: an increase in the complexity and the organized information in such urban systems leads to less demand for resources and less social entropy, which overall makes them more efficient and stable. The goal of this study is to propose a method to measuring city networks sustainable progress based on statistical models, derived from Eurostat databases and NASA satellite images, and capable of analyzing different conceptual scenarios of urban development in Europe. The obtained probability-based indices enable us to evaluate the dynamics of city networks in terms of three components of sustainable progress – economi…
A Techno-Economic Perspective of Constrained Application Protocol
2017
Among billions of Internet enabled devices that are expected to surround us in the near future, many will be resource constrained, i.e., will have limited power supply, processing power and memory. To cope with these limitations, the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP) has been recently introduced as a lightweight alternative to HTTP for connecting the resource limited devices to the Web. Although the new protocol offers solid technical advantages, it remains uncertain whether a successful uptake will follow, as it depends also on its economic feasibility for the involved stakeholders. Therefore, this paper studies the techno-economic feasibility of CoAP using a systematic methodologica…
A stepwise power tariff model with game theory based on Monte-Carlo simulation and its applications for household, agricultural, commercial and indus…
2019
Abstract The concept of game theory has been adapted in the regulation of retail electricity market within the constraints of stepwise power tariff (SPT) for economic energy consumption. The objective is to increase the penetration level of renewable energy sources (RES) and electric vehicles with implementation of Bayesian game model for categorized (i.e. household, agricultural, commercial & industrial) consumers. Bayesian game model is based on degree of information shared by consumers due to their selfish nature. The main goal is to create an algorithm using constraints RES, storage through electric vehicles, electric wiring, number of consumer, efficient equipment, social status of fam…
The Integration and Sharing of Resources for a New Quality of Living
2014
In this chapter, the issues of sharing of information and of information technologies use are dealt with from the juridical point of view, thr…
An Investigation of the Energy Consumption by Information Technology Equipments
2013
The World Wide Web and the rise of servers and PC's data centers have become a major position in the overall power consumption of the world. In order to prevent global warming and ensuing disasters, already Internet-service providers, hosting providers on green power have changed. Even household energy suppliers offer green electricity from renewable energy such as wind , solar, biomass and hydro, which emits no carbon dioxide, to stand against global warming. Only a global change for the information technology can prevent the global -warming. The switch to renewable energy is the beginning of our future and must be pursued as well as the research and development in information and communic…
How Decarbonization, Digitalization and Decentralization are changing key power infrastructures
2018
Abstract This paper addresses the impact over key power infrastructures of the three main drivers for change of these times: Decarbonization, Digitalization and Decentralization. The three phenomena, according to prominent observers, are affecting all fields of our lives but, in the literature, it is difficult to find an analysis of their impact on electrical power systems. The framework proposed in this paper, based on the main power systems evolution models proposed by CIGRE, uses data from open databases and tries to find out general guidelines for power systems development at a worldwide level. Taking as reference the European and COP21 environmental objectives and beyond, the technolog…
