Structural organic chemistry in ecotoxicology

1993

Abstract Role of the methods of structural chemistry in assessment of the ecotoxic effects of organic compounds is described as examples of fate modeling based on structural properties, screening analyses of the affected population, use of model substances and various structure-specific determination methods. Case examples from literature are given and, in addition, structure screening and verification for a contaminant in herring is described.

Biological nutrient removal in membrane bioreactors: denitrification and phosphorus removal kinetics.

2007

The impact of including membranes for solid liquid separation on the kinetics of nitrogen and phosphorus removal was investigated. To achieve this, a membrane bioreactor (MBR) biological nutrient removal (BNR) activated sludge system was operated. From batch tests on mixed liquor drawn from the MBR BNR system, denitrification and phosphorus removal rates were delineated. Additionally the influence of the high total suspended solids concentrations present in the MBR BNR system and of the limitation of substrate concentrations on the kinetics was investigated. Moreover the ability of activated sludge in this kind of system to denitrify under anoxic conditions with simultaneous phosphate uptak…

The analysis of methods for measurement of methane oxidation in landfills

2003

Landfills and dumps are important sources of atmospheric methane. There is no generally accepted estimate of the influence of methane oxidation on landfill methane emissions. The present work aimed to analyse different methods for the investigation of methane emission and oxidation in methane-producing environments (wetlands, landfills, sludge checks), and to develop the precise procedure for the landfills. The combination of geochemical and microbiological methods to estimate and monitor the oxidation and emission of methane in landfills during different seasons is proposed. It includes the measurements, both on the surface and at different depths (up to 1 m) of landfill ground of the foll…

Health effects of mercury ingested through consumption of seafood

1995

It is known world-wide literature that seafood consumption is the main source of mercury intake in people not occupationally exposed. Several studies on the presence of mercury in sea water, sediment and fish and its effects on human health have been carried out in many countries in the Mediterranean area such as Greece, Italy and Jugoslavia. Few data have been published on Sicilian coastal population, consumers of high amounts of fish and on seawater status as the starting point of alimentary chains involving marine food. This study was carried out in July 1991 and July 1992 to determine total mercury and methylmercury levels in selected populations of the coast of Sicily: fishermen in a l…

Co-treatment of landfill leachate in laboratory-scale sequencing batch reactors: analysis of system performance and biomass activity by means of resp…

2014

Aged or mature leachate, produced by old landfills, can be very refractory; for this reason mature leachate is difficult to treat alone, but it can be co-treated with sewage or domestic wastewater. The aim of the study was to investigate the feasibility of leachate co-treatment with synthetic wastewater, in terms of process performance and biomass activity, by means of respirometric techniques. Two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs), named SBR1 and SBR2, were fed with synthetic wastewater and two different percentages of landfill leachate (respectively 10% and 50% v v−1 in SBR1 and SBR2). The results showed good chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency for both reactors, with average C…

Biomarker responses by crucian carp () living in a pond of secondary treated pulp mill effluent

1999

Biochemical and histological biomarkers by the adult crucian carp ( Carassius carassius (L.)) living in a biologically treated pulp mill effluent were studied. Enocell pulp mill in Uimaharju, Finland, discharges its effluents through a waste water pond to the River Pielisjoki. This pond harbours an introduced crucian carp population that apparently reproduces on site. The objective of the present study was to measure possible hormonal effects of treated pulp mill effluent on crucian carps living in a wastewater pond. Adult fish were collected for analysis by traps. A reference population was sampled from a small natural pond. Blood and bile samples were taken for analyses of hemoglobin, hem…

Elemental contamination of an open-pit mining area in the Peruvian Andes

2014

New technologies and higher prices of raw materials have promoted the expansion of mining activity throughout the world; if not properly regulated, this activity can lead to contamination of the local and regional environ- ment. The city of Cerro de Pasco is located close to a large open-pit mine and in recent years, several reports have pro- vided evidence of environmental contamination and related health problems. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the contamination in fluvial water, sediments and biological fluids from this area. The collective results show elevated metal and metalloid concentrations in rivers and sediments, especially in the areas downstream of the mine. For instance,…

Population dynamics using temporal series analysis in a industrial two-stage activated sludge pilot plant

1998

A time series analysis using an autocorrelation function (ACF) was used to assess the relative importance of density (DD) and non density-dependent - (NDD) factors on microfauna abundance of a two-stage activated sludge pilot plant treating industrial effluents. Although some previous work has detected a carrying capacity for the total microfauna abundance in both reactors, ACF showed a general pattern of non-density dependent abundance regulation. Stationarity due to density-dependent factors was observed for the two major species in the first reactor, the sessile Opercularia asymmetrica and the crawling Chilodonatella minuta. There was no evidence of bacterial competition and only weak ev…

Elektroutlenianie odpadowego syntetycznego oleju silnikowego w wodnym roztworze H2SO4

2017

W pracy przedstawiono badania nad możliwością wykorzystania odpadowego syntetycznego oleju silnikowego do bezpośredniego wytwarzania energii elektrycznej. Pomiary przeprowadzono w zakresie temperatur 293–333 K. Obejmowały one elektroutlenianie emulsji odpadowego (zużytego) syntetycznego oleju silnikowego na elektrodzie platynowej w wodnym roztworze H2SO4. Do wytworzenia emulsji wykorzystano niejonowy środek powierzchniowo czynny Syntanol DS-10. Maksymalna uzyskana gęstość prądu wyniosła 22 mA/cm2 (dla temp. 333 K). Wykazano więc, że istnieje możliwość bezpośredniego wytwarzania prądu elektrycznego z odpadowego syntetycznego oleju silnikowego, a więc zasilania nim ogniw paliwowych.

Ogniwo paliwowe zasilane emulsją oleju rzepakowego

2017

W pracy przedstawiono badania nad możliwością wykorzystania oleju rzepakowego jako substancji czynnej do zasilania ogniwa paliwowego. W tym celu zbudowano testowe ogniwo paliwowe. Ogniwo zasilano emulsją oleju rzepakowego. Jako detergent zastosowano Syntanol DS-10. Wykorzystano anodę z katalizatorem platynowym oraz katodę z katalizatorem Ni-Co. Pomiary przeprowadzono w temperaturze 293–333K. Maksymalna uzyskana gęstość prądu wynosiła 2 mA/cm2, natomiast maksymalna moc ogniwa 21 mW (dla temp. 333K). Wykazano, więc możliwość bezpośredniego dostarczania oleju rzepakowego (w formie emulsji) na anodę. Uzyskana moc ogniwa była stosunkowo niska, jednak istnieje możliwość zbudowania ogniwa paliwowe…
