2018

Greenhouse gases (GHGs), naturally part of the atmosphere, have protected us from severe glaciations in the past. Today, human activities increase GHG concentrations and cause rapid and unprecedented Earth warming. Climate change is not resume only to warming, water cycle is also changed. All the research confirms: the climate is changing fast, too fast for ecosystems and societies to adapt. Despite the alerts of the international scientific community, States gathered into Conferences of the Parties (COP) ratify agreements but do not comply with all their commitments. Public opinion polls indicate that climate change is perceived as a risk, but jobs and taxes override environmental concerns…

Evolutionary genomics can improve prediction of species' responses to climate change

2020

Abstract Global climate change (GCC) increasingly threatens biodiversity through the loss of species, and the transformation of entire ecosystems. Many species are challenged by the pace of GCC because they might not be able to respond fast enough to changing biotic and abiotic conditions. Species can respond either by shifting their range, or by persisting in their local habitat. If populations persist, they can tolerate climatic changes through phenotypic plasticity, or genetically adapt to changing conditions depending on their genetic variability and census population size to allow for de novo mutations. Otherwise, populations will experience demographic collapses and species may go ext…

Open challenges in environmental data analysis and ecological complex systems (a)

2020

Abstract This letter focuses on open challenges in the fields of environmental data analysis and ecological complex systems. It highlights relations between research problems in stochastic population dynamics, machine learning and big data research, and statistical physics. Recent and current developments in statistical modeling of spatiotemporal data and in population dynamics are briefly reviewed. The presentation emphasizes stochastic fluctuations, including their statistical representation, data-based estimation, prediction, and impact on the physics of the underlying systems. Guided by the common thread of stochasticity, a deeper and improved understanding of environmental processes an…

Water-use efficiency and transpiration across European forests during the Anthropocene

2015

Considering the combined effects of CO2 fertilization and climate change drivers on plant physiology leads to a modest increase in simulated European forest transpiration in spite of the effects of CO2-induced stomatal closure. The Earth’s carbon and hydrologic cycles are intimately coupled by gas exchange through plant stomata1,2,3. However, uncertainties in the magnitude4,5,6 and consequences7,8 of the physiological responses9,10 of plants to elevated CO2 in natural environments hinders modelling of terrestrial water cycling and carbon storage11. Here we use annually resolved long-term δ13C tree-ring measurements across a European forest network to reconstruct the physiologically driven r…
